Abortion

There are many things in life that people often take for granted. Among them is sometimes the most valuable gift that anyone could possibly posses and it is one of the very things that people tend to not value too much. It is life itself. That is the reason why abortion has always been a very controversial issue between those who don’t care much for the intricacies of life and those who do. Many have argued that abortion is a form of murder and should not be committed because it is the destruction of life. On the other hand, people have stated that it is up to the individual as to whether or not they will proceed with the abortion. Both issues will be discussed later from the two viewpoints to illustrate who is more right and who is more wrong.

Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy before birth (Abortion Methods). In more detail, an abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal of the embryo or fetus from the body of a woman, which results in death (Abortion is Pro-Life / Frequently Asked Questions). Abortion is medical procedure that involves the removal of the fetus by suction, followed by surgical instruments called curettes used to scrape the inside of the woman’s uterus. This is done to insure that all remains of the fetus are totally gone, thereby guaranteeing the success of the operation. There has also been other abortion techniques that may be performed depending on the stage of the pregnancy. The first technique is called Suction Curettage (vacuum aspiration). This procedure is done early in the pregnancy. First, the cervix is widened with a series of instruments. A tube that has been connected to a vacuum is inserted into the uterus. Finally, the embryo is then removed by suction. One other technique is called Dilation and Curettage (D & C) (Surgical Abortion Methods). This technique is used later in the first trimester and is basically the same procedure as the first technique. The third technique is Dilation and Evacuation (D & E). This technique is used only in the second trimester. Instead of using instruments to dilate the cervix, laminaria (material made form seaweed) is placed in the cervix and causes it to become dilated. Forceps are then used to remove the fetus. An abortion is approximately $400-$700. The cost will increase the longer the female will wait to have an abortion (Abortion is Pro-Life).

Personally I feel that abortion is unlawful and should not be done, with a few minor exceptions to the rule. The reason why I feel this way is because it technically is a form of murder on an innocent life, who is not at fault for having been conceived. Some may argue that a woman’s body is her own and that she can do anything that she would like to with it. This can also be compared to the use of illegal drugs, and that those who choose to do them have that choice due to the fact that it is there own bodies and lives that are being destroyed. This argument however can be countered with the simple ethics between right and wrong. Just because it is a woman’s body does not mean that she has the right to terminate the existence of a life that she brought into the world in first place. So before a woman becomes pregnant, she should take into serious consideration the actions and responsibilities she must endure for the well being of the baby. The use of contraceptives is a positive action towards the prevention of a responsibility that she may not want to have yet.

In contrast, there are a few other circumstances I see as exceptions such as rape or pregnancy at too young of age. Granting a minor, with parental guidance or consent, the choice of abortion may preserve one innocent life as opposed to destroying two. If a young child was to get pregnant (and it has happened), her life would basically be over. Her education would be totally lost due to the fact that she would have to spend so much time with child and that is hard to do as a student. Even though it would still be an act of barbarism, at least the child’s future might still be intact.

Another situation that may be excused is rape. In this case it is not the woman’s fault that she ended up in this situation but rather the one who committed this atrocity towards her. In some situations a woman could prevent this from happening to her by being careful of what she does and where she goes. For example, parties are usually where acts of wildness occur due to alcoholism and often drug abuse. This undoubtedly would cause people to lose judgment and end up raping someone that may be at the wrong place at the wrong time. In this case the female should be careful of whom she is with and where. Dress code and attire is another factor that should be looked upon. Sometimes dressing too provocatively can promote sexual thoughts in those who may be mentally weak or demented. So, it is also possible for a woman to bring rape upon herself if she isn’t mindful. Even though these circumstances may be exceptional, the majority of the responsibility still lies within the woman because she has the better judgment to avoid these situations. Also, if a woman’s life or health is endangered by her pregnancy they would consider an abortion. Optimum health will always be a factor with anyone. Good health is vital to carry out our daily agenda in our lives (Arguments of Abortion).

Personally, I feel that the end result of abortion will always be a negative no matter what the circumstance, because it is ultimately the end of a life. Even though I believe there are acceptable exceptions to having an abortion, in my heart I will always feel it is wrong because of my spiritual beliefs. I was taught that committing murder or to kill another is a sin and it is wrong to do. Women know right from wrong and hopefully women choose the right thing to do when they consider abortion. It may be a hard decision, but if women do research and find out on how it will affect them emotionally and physically later on in life, they just might reconsider their options. What may be the apparent solution to their tough situation at the time, my bring more difficult and unforeseen problems in the future. I would advise any and all women who may one day face this decision, to thoroughly consider all factors that are involved. Whatever their decision, they must be prepared to stand behind it.
