When Alaska comes to mind we think of three things, snow, dogs and Eskimos (I might have missed one or two things). Jack London, author of White Fang, chose to write about dogs. He chose to write about one dog in particular that he named White Fang. White Fang is part dog, part wolf and struggles between his dog instincts and overwhelming wolf instincts. He is adopted by an Indian, Gray Beaver, while very young and taught the ways of the dog. White Fang is hit when he is bad and given a treat when he is good. He is later sold to Beauty Smith, an ugly man, both inside and out, Beauty Smith trains White Fang to become a fighting dog. White Fang will never give up despite the odds, fights to the point of near death when he is saved by a man named Scott. Weedon Scott is White Fangs first loving master. He saves White Fang from the bulldog and slowly gains White Fangs trust, and finally his love. Scott takes him to California and takes White Fang into his own home. Taking up the life of a dog is major obstacle for White Fang. He saves Scotts father so he becomes part of the household. White Fang learns that he can kill wild things, and that he doesnt need to tolerate other dogs attacking him. White Fang flourishes, but he never quite relaxes. He misses the snow, misses the Wild. Yet he learns to play with his master and slowly learns to tolerate Collie, the family dog. Collie does not trust White Fang at first because she is a sheep dog, but he works his way into her confidence, and they become mates. In the end, White Fang settles down with Collie and has puppies.
