The divine wind, by Gary Disher challenges some of my ideas about the Australian culture. The philosophy behind Australian culture is built upon the ideal of mateship, equality and multiculturalism. In the book A Loss For Words, Lou Ann Walker tells what it was like to grow up with parents who are both deaf. She relates that she became very responsible at a young age. The man behind the counter had looked up, seen me signing and grunted, ‘Huh, I didn’t think mutes were allowed to have driver’s licenses.’ Long ago I had gotten used to hearing those kinds of comments. But I could never get used to the way they made me churn inside.” Another implication of Lou Ann’s parents being deaf was when she walked to their hotel after they left her at her dorm at Harvard. On page 1, chapter 1 “I made my way to their room on the third floor and as I raised my knuckles, it dawned on me that knocking would do no good. I knew they were awake, I could hear the television. I took a notebook paper out of my purse and bent down to shove it underneath the door, working it in and out. There was no response. I tried crumpling up a small piece to throw into the room but I couldn’t get it between the jamb and the door. I pounded on the gray metal, thinking they might feel the vibration. I must have stood there for 0 minutes, hoping Dad might come out to get ice from down the hall or perhaps go to the car to retrieve a bag. But he didn’t. There was no way that night to get the attention of my deaf parents. I walked back to my dorm.” Being the child of deaf parents and the deaf child of hearing parents can be a tough situation. There are many passages in the book that substantiate this, but if I were to delve into them, they would become the whole 5 page limit for this paper. There are many devices used to aid the deaf in everyday activity. Mentioned in the book are the flashing light for when the doorbell and phone ring, a cry box that flashes when the baby cries, the TTY for the phone, pulsing light alarm clock, vibrating bed alarm clock, and so on. I personally have had experience with using TTY, well, placing calls through the California Relay Service at least. Sometimes my friend would talk, others he would have the operator read his messages to me. I would talk too fast sometimes, and when the operator would ask me to repeat myself, I would sometimes forget what it was that I wanted to say. Lou Ann’s parents tried to avoid talking in public, they used a pen and paper to write back and forth with whomever they were trying to communicate with. Where I was working there was a deaf woman, and this is how she managed to talk with people. I tried signing to her a little, but since she is in her sixties is my guess, she may have been taught by oralist means. Then again, I am not all that great in my signing yet, which quiet easily could have been a factor. The deaf are subjected to peoples’ stares and they have feelings of isolation. Kids at school mocked sign language, and Lou Ann’s parents were even denied service at places. These are among deaf issues not mentioned in the syllabus, but that take place in their world. In the book it was said that some insurance companies will not sell the deaf coverage or they charge them higher premiums. In answer to this, there are deaf auto insurance companies. There are also deaf electricians, accountants, everything. The deaf are expected to go to the deaf first since they would be less likely to rip each other off. “There are deaf social clubs, national magazines, local newspapers, fraternal organizations, insurance companies, athletic competitions, colleges, beauty pageants, theater groups, even deaf street gangs.” I found this all on page of chapter . On page of chapter , it was mentioned that deaf people have been shot in the back by police when they had not heard the command to halt, so, rare as it most likely is, that would be yet another deaf issue. Even though sign language is visual, signers get away with telling secrets by turning their backs and making smaller gestures. Another incident in the book is when Lou Ann’s mom was nearly 8 months pregnant with her, and dad had appendicitis. Mom got locked out of the house and she didn’t want people thinking she was less capable or more dependent because she was deaf, so she broke a window and crawled in the house to get her keys. Lou Ann’s parents bought a television to help her learn to talk. Her parents signed as they spoke to her and her sisters. Adults talked to Lou Ann and not her parents. On page 68 in chapter 6, Lou Ann says that “I hardly ever brought kids home with me. Mom asked me not to, saying the house wasn’t straightened up enough, in fact, it was always neat and clean. The real reason was that in this new place among strangers, her house was a refuge. It was easier having her daughter run small errands, talk to door to door salesmen, and act as her buffer to the outside world.” Deaf people are very perceptive. Lou Ann’s parents knew when there was something wrong, even if she didn’t say as much. There was a time of her dad’s co workers called when she was about 8 or 10 I think and said very dirty things. She told her parents it was a wrong number. On pages 14 and 150 in chapter 1, Lou Ann discusses her methods of teaching sign to hearing people “We were midway through the first term. I believed in total immersion, which was hard on the students, but I felt it would ultimately make them better signers. From the first two hour class on, I had not said a word. I wanted them to know a little bit of what it is like to be deaf lost, confused, unable to communicate. In the beginning I had to pantomime much of what I wanted to get across. I’d pretend I was turning on a set of faucets, holding out one hand like a cup. I pointed into the glass, then took it to my lips. ‘Water,’ I signed, the first three fingers of my hand pointing upright, lightly touching the edge of my lower lip twice. If the students didn’t understand the charade, I’d turn and write it on the blackboard, but I tried to avoid even that. I didn’t want the students automatically translating everything from sign to English, that slowed the process.” This is very much the way Mr. Rennie teaches, like in one of the first sessions of class, he got across the point that if someone is fishing in Alaska, there are no make up tests. There is nothing wrong with the deaf. What is wrong is the people who do not give them a chance.

All three of the characters in Generation-X settled for city jobs, destined to the same routine day in and day out. They all longed for something more, some freedom. Though Charlie is fully satisfied with the life he has come to acquire, on the sidelines, finally one day his rose-glasses are shattered by a teacher, who is merely looking out for Charlie’s best interest. He is told to finally start participating in life, but this is a lot harder for Charlie then he ever thought it would be. In Generation-X, the three may have escaped the menial city work, however, once living in their minimalist bungalows they one day get the realization that they can’t live like this forever. Upon a visit from a friend, their bubble is popped and reality sinks in. Lastly, when Karen awakes from her coma, she is ripped out of her literal dream world. She can no longer escape the truth through sleep, she must live in reality, but after 17 years in a coma it is difficult to get back into the swing of things without being sent into a world of, well, hatred of the world. This is the downturn all three book’s characters take once the onset of reality sets in.


Cynicism reins over all the characters and each seeks a way out. Charlie, being a 14-year-old boy chooses the path of drugs to feed his need of escape. Not being able to stand his own discontent he joins his friends and gets involved in with more drugs then he can handle. For Dag, Andy and Clair, of Generation-X choose to run away from it all. They decide an escape to Mexico is the best solution to their problems and will help them avoid the real world for a bit longer. Finally, Karen escapes every again by returning to her dream world. In her sleep she is fine, happy and away from the world she came to dislike so quickly on her awakening.

Khrushchev did not intend to show lack of respect for Kennedy by putting the missiles in Cuba; instead he placed them there for defense of the Island from American invasion, to maintain the balance of nuclear arms between the two super powers and to display a right to deploy nuclear weapons in close proximity to the United States since the United States had put missiles in Turkey.


Kennedy was concerned that wile he was making these decisions Cuba and the soviets were as well informed about CIA activities and capabilities.


Kennedy and his administration were not examining all facets of the situation. They believed that Khrushchev was acting in a manner that displayed himself more as a “bully” than a leader concerned of his country’s security.

The Implications of the Cuban Missile Crisis for US Foreign Policy

Kennedy had successfully stood up to Khrushchev and had made him back down. At the same time, the USSR had gained a useful ally in Uncle Sams backyard and a promise from the USA that Cuba would not be invaded. The fact that Khrushchev had been forced to back down over the question of missiles was quietly forgotten in Soviet circles, whereas Khrushchevs role as a responsible peacemaker was highlighted.


The Cuban missile crisis has had important long-term effects. Even during the crisis itself, some of us in the U.S. government, and I presume in the Soviet government as well, were thinking ahead to the future. For example, I had argued for a tough stand on the removal of the missiles and the bombers, but also for movement toward a reduction in tensions after resolution of the crisis. The United States and the Soviet Union are great powers with global interests, and sometimes those interests clash. Crisis management is necessary if crises arise; but crisis prevention and crisis avoidance based on political restraint and accommodation of differences are much to be preferred. Arms control limitations and reductions are important in their own right and because they can favorably affect political relations. Prevention of nuclear war, and hence prevention of any war involving the United States and the Soviet Union, are of the highest priority. Nonetheless, since political efforts to resolve disputes peacefully are not always successful, we must be prepared to deal with and defuse any crises that may, despite our best efforts, occur. This includes the need to de-escalate crises, and still more any armed hostilities that might break out. Studying the experience and learning the lessons of the 16 missile crisis, and to the extent possible doing so together, can help both the United States and the Soviet Union to ensure not only that such a crisis never recurs, but also that a greater catastrophe never occurs.

My internship at Putnam was an experienced that I was very proud of. It was great to work at Putnam and it was also great to leave Putnam. Some of the times that I spent at Putnam were beneficial to me because it represented a beginning of my professional life. When I was actually taking calls, I have to learn how to search for items myself that were relevant to most of the calls. Also, there were long hours of listening to the lady explaining to us how to talk on the phone instead of us practicing how to talk. Another problem was that there was very little focus on information that was going to be a frequent call such as ARP. ARP involved using sophisticated computer system to track checks. The trainer did not teach me how to do it on the system. He basically explained it to us just only by words and no example. In addition, the rest of the interns and I spend 4-5 hours straight listening to one of our trainers explaining to us about retirement plan. The bad part of this was that I later on discovered that very few calls were relevant to retirement plan. Only the basic retirement information was important and most of it was not. This upset me because I believe that I could use some of that time to really prepare myself for actual calls. Another thing was that there was too much emphasis on reading rather than practicing. I spend hours and sometime the whole day just reading chapters that they gave us. The chapters tells us how to form transactions, but I spend so little time practicing. Furthermore, part of my training was to sit down with other representatives and basically listen to their calls. I have to admit that it was very scary listening to other people taking calls. I really did not understand to what the shareholders were saying. It was like listening to a different language. When the representatives perform transaction on the computer, it was very confusing for me to watch and understand what they were doing. In contrast to the stress I faced, the final week of training was beneficial. I get to sit with one of the interns and take calls together. It was very frightening; however, it did felt good knowing that another clueless person was there with you and experiencing the same thing I was. At that time, there was one supervisor that walked around the interns ready to help us if we needed any help. That supervisor was very busy on that day.


After training was over, I went to work almost completely clueless. I felt like I just walked into Putnam for the very first time. I did not want to take any calls but did went through it on my first day because this was one of the many obstacles that I have to face in my life.


There were many bad parts when working at Putnam. One of them was that I was I sounded dumb because I did not know what to do when on calls. I lacked confidence because not want to help me. Every questions seem like a stupid questions to them. Additionally, I did not mind doing the work as long I was getting paid to do the work. However, a lot of works that I had to do took place beyond my work schedule. An example will be filling out forms sending out an array of forms requested by shareholders. way of execution. Both methods are still in use today. Althought the methods have


changed, the current status and attitudes of the death penalty has not changed much from


ancient times.


The rate of execution today is much lower than it was 50 years ago. In 1, over

Some opponents of the death penalty interveiwed several police chiefs and got


their opinions of capital punishment. Of the police cheifs polled, most veiwed other


methods of controlling crime as more effective including gun control, community policing,


neighborhood crime programs, and more effective efforts against drug and youth crime.


The police chiefs rank capital punishment as less cost-effective than other methods and a


vast majority do not believe that the threat of the death penalty deters people from


committing murder. Barely half of the police chiefs that were polled support the death


penalty. It costs three times as much (more than million per inmate) to carry out the


death penalty, than keep and inmate for 40 years in prison.


Opponents of the death penalty support the passage in the Bible Thou shall not


kill. Thy believe that it is morally wrong to sentence someone to death. Supporters of the


death penalty say that society needs to get rid of savage killers and that if a person isnt put

death penalty is a necessary tool to fight and deter crime, by causing murderers to fear


arrest and convicition, and by preventing convicted murders to kill again. In recent years,


violent crime in New York has dropped dramatically, due in part to the reinstitution of the


death penalty. Pataki also said that For too long criminals were not subject to swiff and


certain punishment and, as a result, violent criminals acts were not detered. Preventing a


crime from being committed ultimately is more important than punishing criminals after


they have shattered innocent lives. Patakis supporting statements of the death penalty


summarize the beliefs of supporters of the death penalty.


What does the future hold for the death penalty? Well, the conservative justices of


the Supreme Court show no sign of overturning the death penalty, althought opponents to


capital punishment have turned to state legislatures for change, their has been little results.


As long as the opinion of many Americans is that capital punishment is the answer to


violent crimes, the United States is likely to have a death penalty.
