Road Rage

Today’s roadway can be the most dangerous place. Yet everyone uses it and most don’t think about the dangers on the road. More people die on then road then airplane crashes, and train wreaks combined. Why is the road so dangerous? And what makes then so dangerous? It’s Road Rage.

Road Rage is a new term that is used to explain people’s dangerous actions on the road. From wreak less driving to speeding all falls in the definition of Road Rage. Road Rage is also a criminal offence.

Write my Essay on road rage

Many people get angry on the road very easily and very quickly. There can be many reasons for this. It can be problems from work, getting fired, getting layed off from there job, and family problems. Others include slow drivers, getting cut off, and being in a hurry to get somewhere, and being late for an event.

Statistics had shown that more males are arrested because of Road Rage then women. This is because the male is venerable to show his emotional stress more freely then a woman. But just because there are more males getting arrested for Road Rage does not mean that the women have nothing to o with it. They too show an increasing amount of arrests in the past years.

According to a regional survey conducted by Drs. Arnold P. Nerenberg and R. Jerry Adams, over half of drivers in the USA suffer from road rage. That means that most of us will encounter Road Rage many times. Road Rage can lead to injuries or

even death. The U.S. Highway Safety Office has testified to Congress that tens of thousands of accidents each year can be linked directly to Road Rage, and is now a leading cause of death for young children.

If you ever encounter Road Rage you have to get a hold of your emotions. The best advice is to safely get away from an angry driver as quickly as possible. If necessary, pull over and cool off before continuing. The most effective way to stop

Road Rage is to have a sign in your car that says “SORRY”. Research has shown that this calms many drivers on the road. And finally drive safely and don’t let the confusion of the road turn you into a Road Rager.

I believe that a knowers point of view is relative. Therefore I think that it should be taken into account as an asset as well as an obstacle to overcome when pursuing knowledge. On one hand it should be considered an asset since it presumably is the opinion of someone familiar with the subject in topic, someone who has studied it deeply and knows a lot about it. I believe it could be helpful for people who aren’t as well prepared, as the knower is, to consider this person’s point of view in order to expand their knowledge in such matter. On the other hand I think that this knowledge should be analyzed and not taken as a universal truth. People should be able to take this knowledge into account, trying to obtain from it a personal opinion, but not being determined by the knowers point of view. It is important for sources to be considered as ways of obtaining knowledge, but is as important to question them in order to really obtain it.

There are many ways and many sources to consider in the acquisition of knowledge and all of them can be thought of as reliable, at least to some extent. Science for example is considered by our western civilization as an extremely reliable source and is sometimes not questioned by regular citizens who blindly believe in it. Marx said that religion is the opium of the masses; I personally think that nowadays we could (to some extent) consider that science, because of its accuracy, strength and reliability, has a similar impact to the one Marx saw in religion at his time. Everything is and should be doubted, if in the past science had been unquestioned we would probably continue to believe that the earth is flat.

Concerning the knower we might say it represents a source of knowledge in the form of authority. This particular person is known for being an expert in his area and his opinion is highly estimated by others and therefore is usually thought of as true. Authority is a commonly respected and undoubted source since it has in its favour the factor of pressure, which can be direct or indirect. When someone we respect or think as wise establishes something as true, we are subconsciously influenced to believe in it. An example of this is a psychological experiment, which was held in order to prove the strength of authority. A group of science students were given instructions from their teacher in order to accomplish an experiment that consisted in combining some gases. The combination of these led to a big explosion. Even though a large majority of the students knew or at least suspected the reaction of this specific combination they had so much respect and credibility towards their teacher that they were actually going to do the experiment. From this example I can deduct as I already mentioned that people should consider knowers as a reliable source but not be blinded by them and keep thinking by themselves in order to reach their own truth and acquire knowledge.

Sometimes although we respect a person’s opinion deep inside we feel that what they are saying is not entirely correct. Instincts and emotions are other ways of acquiring knowledge and as in any source they don’t always lead to truth but should also be taken into account. Blaise Pascal says, “The heart has reasons Reason does not know”. Sometimes things that seem irrational are true, feelings may be stronger than reason and knowledge can be acquired from them. Reason is another path that can lead to knowledge or truth. Sometimes although a knower establishes something as true if we don’t think it makes sense, if it’s not reasonable we won’t accept it as such.

Custom Essays on 1)Should a knower´s point of view be considered an asset in the pursuit of knowledge or an obstacle to overcome?

Authority, represented in this case by the knower, is an extremely strong source. It’s difficult to stand up for something you believe when someone who supposedly knows everything about the subject says that something is true even if you are sure and can prove it isn’t.

I think that the area of knowledge of the knower is something to evaluate as well. I believe there might be a difference in credibility depending on the area of knowledge in concern. In first place there is a difference if the subject being considered is part of an area you already are familiar with or know about. It definitely is easier to defend something you believe in when you have the knowledge to back it up that when it is something you know little about. In second place some areas of knowledge can be more questionable than others since some can be considered more subjective and others more objective. The kind of experience the knower needs to have achieved in order to transmit it to others depends on the area of knowledge he knows about. It is of extreme importance the experience of the knower and the way he transmits it to others. Concerning this and referring to an area such as art Simone de Beauvoir says that in order to transmit something to others you have to understand them and better still be a part of them. “In order for the artist to have a world to express he must be first situated in this world, oppressed or oppressing, resigned or rebellious, a man among men”. I think this statement can be applied to art as to other areas of knowledge.

The importance of the areas of knowledge is considerable and due to the subjectivity they may posses. It is different when someone is trying to transmit knowledge in an area like Mathematics that when the area expressed is one like Ethics. Mathematics is more objective and precise and its knowledge is therefore easier to transmit. Ethics is definitely a more complicated area since it is very subjective and personal, everyone has their own truth and although there might be certain believes that seem to be universal in the end it is up to the person and its own consciousness.

People sometimes seem to think that some areas of knowledge are trustworthier than others. I personally believe that all areas of knowledge are different and that some are more reliable for certain things than others and vice versa. Bertrand Russell for example establishes that “Whatever knowledge is attainable, must be attained by scientific methods; and what science cannot discover, mankind cannot know.” On the other hand Einstein says “It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.” I must agree with Einstein since I believe that some things can be better explained by science and that other things can be better explained by other means like emotions, reason or experience.

There is another issue that should be considered, I believe that we can assume that when speaking of acquiring knowledge we are also speaking of acquiring truth. When speaking of truth the first thing we must establish is what truth is. There are different theories concerning this matter, Nietzsche, for example, with his theory of perspectivism says that there is no such thing as a universal truth and that everyone has their own beliefs and there own truth. There are other theories, like Plato’s, that establish that there is a universal truth and that we live in an imperfect world where we can’t find it, at least not easily. If we stick to Nietzsche’s point of view we would probably consider that the knowers point of view is not reliable since his world is different, his realities are different and therefore his truth is of no use for the pursuer. If we consider theories like Plato’s we may believe that the knower is a source to take into account because it might get us closer to the essence, to the truth.

In conclusion I believe that a knowers point of view is something to take into consideration and evaluate deeply. I think that in order to acquire knowledge we must question the source in many aspects and we must be able to distinguish which one should be use for different instances. A knowers opinion may be an asset or an obstacle when pursuing knowledge depending on many factors, like the area, the veracity of the knower and our own opinion of him. In order to reach the truth we can’t rely only on one source but try to acquire the best from all of them.

Teaching Special Needs Children

What’s my patience level? How well will I deal with stressful situations? Will I find myself becoming irritated when a child doesn’t immediately grasp a concept? These are questions I needed to ask myself before deciding on a career in teaching children with special needs.

Special education is a unique field. It has to address the specialized skills that are required to work with children who have challenging needs, while at the same time acknowledging that there is actually more of a commonality than difference between special and traditional education. But unlike traditional education, where children are personally responsible, at least in part, for what they learn, the special education student has more reliance on the teacher to provide for him to show him how to learn. It’s been my observation that teacher behavior very often has a direct and immediate effect on the behavior and learning of the children. For instance, teacher praise while an important part of any educational experience seems to have a more profound effect on the special needs child. These children are often more sensitive to both praise and criticism, than the child in a traditional setting. I had to ask myself if I were the sort of person who could recognize this aspect and who was attuned to the sensitivities of the special needs child.

A thing that we have to know as teachers is what is a “special needs” child. According to Lesley Webb author of the book “Children with special needs in the infants’ school”, there are five different areas that we can use to help find out if the children are consider “special needs”.

The five are, Personality of the teacher, Record keeping, Contact with the Parents, Standardized testing, and the School Nurse. These different areas help will provide enough information for us to at least get the child more testing to see if they are “special needs”.

My personal philosophy is that “special” children need special attention and interaction with their teacher. To be successful in this field, that is, to achieve personal success by fostering successful behavior in the students one has to be prepared to be both teacher and surrogate parent; friend and disciplinarian; nurturer and cheerleader.

I personally feel that no one role should take precedence over another, putting on one’s “teacher hat” is no more important in the actual teaching of special needs children than is wearing the ‘friend’ or ‘cheerleader’ persona. My own strengths lie in recognizing when these children need a hug more than a reprimand, a smile more than a stern look. Conversely, I also feel enough in tune with their needs to recognize when to set a more serious tone. If anything, my weakness may be that I would become so personally and emotionally attached to the children that I might possibly lose my perspective. But this is where the ‘parent’ hat is set firmly on my head.

The teacher of special needs children often does assume the role of surrogate parent -- the child’s own parent may quite possibly be unable or unaware how to interact with the child who has special needs, and the teacher needs to be able to take on a parental-type role at school, for consistency in learning and behavior modeling for the child.

I believe that providing instruction for the parents or guardians of special needs children is another important part of the learning experience. Parents don’t inherently know the best form of interaction with a special child, simply because he or she is their child. I think a parent-teacher partnership is one of the best ways to educate the child with special needs, ensuring that the steps taken at school will be followed at home; that the methods employed for behavior or learning will be reinforced by both parent and teacher; and that the child will have a sense of consistent and expected behavior and results, regardless of where he is.

Finally, I think the child’s environment should be structured in a way that is most conducive to learning. This may seem obvious, and a goal that should be set for every classroom, but with special needs children, the classroom environment is especially important. Depending on the type of program within the school, and whether or not the school provides inclusion in a traditional classroom, the special needs child may be returning to the same classroom the same environment for successive years. It’s important that he not only feel comfortable within this environment but that the environment provides him with what he needs. This environment should include appropriate teaching materials those which are not only functional, but relevant to the children’s daily lives, and appropriate for a wide range of skill levels varied activities, and also interaction with other children including providing some time to integrate with peers from a traditional classroom.

Above all, I feel the teacher of special needs children should acknowledge that the students in the classroom, regardless of their challenges and ability levels, aren’t primarily disabled, but are first and foremost children.

The Advantages of Flextime

When an employee wakes up at 50 in the morning for 0 years someone has to think that this sometimes becomes very routine and boring. Get up at 50, be at work at 8 and then watch the clock until 4 that afternoon. This describes many peoples’ attitudes to their workday. What if they are a night person and say could work from 11 that morning to 7 in the evening? This is the idea of flextime and it is gaining in popularity in the United States’ major and smaller corporations.

Flextime is basically allowing an employee to pick the hours of their workday around the core mid-day hours, such as 11 A.M. to P.M. They determine their own starting and stopping hours to best suit them, but they must still put in their regular weekly hours of work. In practice most employers only give employees a limited amount of freedom in choosing their hours, such as an employee has to be in by 10 A.M., but to a mother who needs to have a few more hours of rest in the morning this could make a huge difference in her attitude toward work, job performance, and absenteeism. These are just a few advantages of the flextime work arrangements. ()

At Ernst and Young, the focus is on results, not face time, says Denny Marcel, a member of the companys New York-based Office for Retention. Employees know that they can choose flexible work arrangements (FWA) and still be competent. We empower people to decide how, when, and where they get their jobs done. (5). Flextime often gives employees a sense of empowerment and motivation to their jobs. Flextime scheduling often works as a motivator. By letting employees more or less set their own hours, an employer is telling them two things I trust you to put in the time and to be productive, and, This is your chance to show you can be a self-starter. Both of those are powerful motivating messages ().

Help with essay on Advantages of Flextime

Flextime can also help retain a company’s most prized employees. This excerpt is from a September 001 issue of Sales and Marketing Management.

“One morning in 18 Bruce Fleischmann, a sales manager with Pfizer, was out making calls with a salesperson who had just returned from maternity leave. Fleischmann noticed that the woman, whom he knew well, just wasnt herself. She seemed anxious and preoccupied. So Fleischmann asked if something was on her mind. She just burst into tears, he recalls. She said she felt torn about whether or not to be home with her child or at work; that even though she liked her job, it was tough to do that and be a new mother. A few weeks later the salesperson quit, unable to find a way to combine work and parenting. Its a typical situation, Fleischmann says. Her productivity was high and from a financial point of view, it costs Pfizer tens of thousands of dollars to replace someone at that level of sales, Fleischmann says. Its downright painful to lose them.

In an effort to stem the turnover of productive salespeople like these, Pfizer recently began offering a limited number of its highest performers the opportunity to work shorter, more flexible hours. Flextime reps would work 60 percent of a full-time schedule, with several scheduling options to choose from. Their income would also be scaled back to 60 percent, but bonuses, awards, and health benefits would stay the same.” ()

As one can see that if an effective flextime program would have been in place at Pfizer loosing valued employees such as this could be avoided. Not only does Pfizer face the task of hiring a new salesperson, but also must pay to train the new salesperson as stated in the example. Many employers have no idea that they have lost a valued employee because of an unfilled lack of flexibility. (8)

Flextime can also help attract the most talented of employees to work for a company. When employees see that a corporation cares about their personal lives and their well being then the company will be one that many people will want to work for. In fact according to the book 100 Best Companies to Work for in America, one of the top areas for improvement has been sensitivity to work and family issues. Many of the companies cited in the book showed major advancement in dealing with the problems of family care and flexible work schedules, offering such options as flextime (7). Flexible working hours are also more important than money to many new job seekers. Flexible working hours are more important than money for nearly a third of people looking for a new job, according to a recent survey. The online poll, carried out by recruitment website reed.co.uk with the Department of Trade & Industrys Work-Life Balance campaign, surveyed more than 4,000 job-seekers. They found that 68% of jobseekers would like the chance to work more flexible hours when necessary. 77% of parents with children under the age of six said that work/life balance is an important factor in deciding whether to apply for a new job, and 60%of workers view their work/life balance as an important factor in deciding whether to take a new job. Flextime is a major advantage to companies who are seeking new talented employees. (1)

In fact just having a flextime program in place also reduces stress on the job. “Most of those employees wont actually take advantage of flextime, but just knowing they can take advantage of it makes all the difference,” says Maria Bailey, founder of Blue Suit Mom .com, a work/life balance consultancy based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Having a flextime program gives a sense of comfort to employees, and allows them the freedom they need when they might need it. Having this reduces job related stress tremendously. (10)

Flextime can also lead to loyalty to the company from the employee. With the economy in a downturn many employees are not looking to change jobs at this moment, and with money tight companies want to keep employees. Flextime offers ways in which employees can work hard when they want to. An employee is more loyal to a company who works with them and gives them more options than just a paycheck. Many employees view loyalty as a two way street in which the employer must show loyalty to them also. Flextime is a great way to show the loyalty that the employee deserves. (6)

Flextime is a flexible hour program that could very well change the way work is done in America. Flextime can lead to less stress, better employees, employee loyalty, employee retention and motivated employees. If a flextime program is not an integral part of a corporation it is not only the employees who loose, but also the corporation. More than a quarter of full-time workers, or 5 million people, work flexible schedules. With the benefits of flextime and other flexible options both employees and employers can benefit from their advantages. (4)

In the novel “To Kill a Mocking Bird” by Harper Lee, one of the main characters is Atticus Finch, a defense lawyer for Maycomb County, Alabama. He’s also the honorable father of main character Scout and Jem. He is the lawyer for accused black rapist Tom Robinson and he tries to change injustices and racism in his small hometown. Atticus inner conflicts are expertly written in this novel. Atticuss physical appearance doesnt play a big part in the novel. Atticus is nearly fifty and wears glasses. Through the book we notice that Atticus has great pride in defending what is right and telling his children Jem and Scout what is wrong. Atticus is a very strong willed character. He always speaks his mind. He is not afraid of what other people think of him. People in the community are very trusting of Atticus because he sticks to what he believes in. All people are equal and deserve equal treatment no matter what race or religion.

For Atticus Finch, most things are as simple as black and white. He is able to make an impact on his children and both types of society. Atticus is a single parent who tries very hard to make everybody he interacts with satisfied. Atticus Finch has a strong impact on the people around him his children, the black community, and the white community. Atticus makes a huge difference on the way his children live. He teaches them when they need to be taught and disciplines them when they need disciplining. By providing his children with a relatively excessive amount of freedom, Atticus demonstrates that he loves Jem and Scout. For example, Atticus does not limit who Jem and Scout consort with to those who have respectable family backgrounds. Atticus allows his children to judge all people equally and choose their friends for themselves. This is a very special privilege considering the amount of prejudice around at the time. When Scout and Jem bring Walter Cunningham home for lunch Atticus kindly welcomed him into his home even though he was a poor farmer’s son.

In this book, there are many pieces of evidence that cover the aspect of this question. One of the first of many begins on page 5. Scout has just finished eating her dinner, and Atticus asks her whether she is ready to read. However, like many young children do, Scout explains to him that she is feeling under the weather and didn’t think she’d go to school any more… if it were ok with him. Atticus was taught by his father but never went to school. The gentle father cleverly extracts what the problem Scout is having a makes a compromise with her. Atticus represents Harper Lee’s ideas about how a truly human person should be kind, caring, ethical, compassionate, responsible and a down right good person.

Vince Lombardi, most likely the best coach to ever lead a team to victory or multiple ones on a football field. His ethics sometimes questionable, but never misunderstood, were always meant to lead and encourage his team to be nothing but the best, and the best was achieved in 167. After nine incredible winning seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Lombardi decided to retire as head coach. The Packers had dominated professional football under his direction, collecting six division titles, five NFL championships, two Super Bowls and acquiring a record of 8-0-4. After less than a year, however, he realized that he still wanted to coach. He accepted the head coaching position for the Washington Redskins in 16. During that season, he kept what had become the Lombardi tradition and led the Redskins to their first winning record in 14 years. In January of 170, his professional coaching record stood at a remarkable 105-5-6, and the NFL named him their acclaimed 160s Man of the Decade.

His statement that “winning is the only thing that matters in sport”, is one of the truths that is still inherent in today’s world of sports. Athletes are willing to cheat to guarantee success, either through the use of performance-enhancing drugs, or through the act of injuring others. These days, drugs, blood doping, corruption, injuring others and the consequences of winning and more importantly losing is all evident. Lombardi’s statement is not only applicable to athletes, but it also applies to the countries that the athletes are representing. Events such as the Olympics and the World Cup of Hockey, are a source of national pride and some countries are willing, and fully wanting to try and do anything to bring prestige back, many of them resorting to unethical tactics. Lombardi’s statement does not only affect players, or athletes, it also affects coaches, owners, and managers. They too place winning as their number one concern. In many cases, fair play generally takes a back seat to the desire for winning. The truth of the matter is that, some will bend rules, while others will outright cheat. The corruptness of sports today has lead to the endless methods and desires of unethical behaviour.

In the history of ethics there are three principal standards of conduct, each of which has been proposed as the highest good happiness or pleasure; duty, virtue, or obligation; and perfection, the fullest harmonious development of human potential. When applied to sports, and especially with Vince Lombardi, the third principle standard of conduct, is the most evident, and it will be evident throughout the essay. Other ethical issues that come into the picture is Kant’s. No matter how intelligently one acts, the results of human actions are subject to accident and circumstance; therefore, the morality of an act must not be judged by its consequence, but only by its motivation. If sports were motivated by Kant’s theory, then winning would not be as important, but the success of participating, and being part of a team, would be the successful outcome. Another ethical theory that comes to play is Bentham’s. He explained the principle of utility as a means of augmenting the happiness of the community. He believed that all human actions are motivated by a desire to obtain pleasure and avoid pain. Utilitarianism is the greatest happiness of the greatest number of people. When analysing this, there are two aspects you can use to analyse this when looking at it from a sports point of view. If we use the greatest amount of people, we can use it as society, where Lombardi’s speech does not benefit the whole, but if we look at it in the context of the greatest good for the team, then his speech definitely is appropriate.

Getting back to the methods used by people to win, and get an advantage, we will see what people and organizations, and even countries are willing to do to accomplish a victory. Winning is a very important thing not only to the athletes, but it is very important to their countries as well. In the early 160s drugs were used more frequently among the communist nations who wanted to enhance their national prestige through sports. Certain Countries, such as China and East Germany have been guilty of abusing such practices. The glory of winning a gold medal and what follows is more important to them than anything else. It is one of the major influences behind drug use in sports. A major concern for new athletes representing their countries is not simply about the satisfaction of winning but the rewards of success. The rewards are staggering, as the dollar volume being showered on winners is second to none. The figures have become so mind-boggling that the interests of people involved in this lucrative business is no longer centred around ethical and health-related concerns.

Some athletes are willing to give up most of what they have worked for their entire lives in order to win a gold medal. Not only do some use performance-enhancing drugs to help break records or win gold medals, but blood doping is another example in which athletes attempt to improve performance.

Drug related scandals are some of the major concerns with the Olympics. Drug testing was introduced at the Olympics in 167, when at the 160 Olympics in Rome, Swedish cyclist Knut Jensen took compound drugs to compete in the road race during which he collapsed and died. This incident shocked the international sports world and the International Olympic Committee established a mandatory dope test for all Olympic athletes in 167. In 188 a Canadian shameful Ben Johnson was caught using steroids and had his gold medal stripped from him. Over the years many people have been caught for drug use. These athletes involved range from long-distance runners, weight lifters, and swimmers. In the 18 Summer Pan American games several gold medal winners were also disqualified for the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The need to win makes athletes do almost anything to find the extra bit that could make the difference. Many techniques are introduced and employed by athletes in order to gain that advantage in their respective fields. Some athletes try to increase the effectiveness of the drugs by combining them into several combinations.

One problem with drug tests is that athletes continue to find new ways in beating the tests. Some of them are now trying to mask their drug use with other drugs that will help them pass. Also, some athletes who use steroids months before the games, discontinue their usage a few months before they will be tested and then resume once again after the testing is over. This allows them the possibility of not being caught, with the overall goal of gaining an edge on the competition to achieve fame and glory.

Other ways athletes seek an unfair advantage without running the risk of failing the drug tests is through a process known as blood doping. Blood is removed from the athlete’s system and then frozen and stored. Over the next several weeks, the athlete’s body makes more red blood cells and returns the athlete’s blood volume to normal. Just before competition, the stored blood is given back to the athlete. The athletes blood now contains an above normal number of blood cells. This increased number of blood cells allows the athlete to perform with greater endurance. Although blood boosting can improve athletic performance, it is an extremely dangerous practice. Athletes who do this have an unfair and unnatural advantage over athletes who do not. It is not in the spirit of fair sports competition, but these athletes are more concerned with winning than sportsmanship or their health.

The Olympics have had a history of corrupt judges, from the recent figure skating scandal to the countless years back. In the Seoul Olympics, all Olympic judges and referees were given everything they wanted in exchange for gold medals. The Russian and Korean boxing judges conspired to keep the Americans from winning gold medals. The American IBF super middleweight champion of the world, Roy Jones, was “robbed” in a fight with Korea’s Park Si-Hun. Jones out-boxed Park, landing more punches than park by a count of eighty-six to thirty-two. The Koreans watching the fight were outraged by this decision and Park himself felt that Jones had beaten him. In another fight between Lennox Lewis and American Riddick Bowe, the referee interfered with the match when Lewis started getting tired and disrupting Bowe’s concentration, robbing the Americans of another medal. This makes it apparent that it is not only important for athletes to win, but Countries need the status of being a winner as well, no matter how obvious their cheats are.

Coaches, players, owners and managers also place a high value on winning. Coaches are seen as being good or bad based on their records. Those with a winning record are seen as being the good coaches which in turn are the ones who are usually hired by organizations. Those who have losing records for the teams, are usually looked upon as scapegoats, and are fired and replaced. To win a coach might bend the rules. They place gamesmanship above sportsmanship and try to stretch the rules as far as they can. Some see the rules as being the only definition of what is right or wrong and if the situation is not included in the rule book, then that means that its fair to exploit. For example, in 1, the rules didn’t dictate what a uniform could look like, except that the number had to be on the back of the jersey, and that is when Paul Brown came up with a strategy to help his team. He cut footballs in half and sewed one half in front of the jersey. While this may seem like good strategy, Brown’s desire to win made him resort to unethical tactics that would seem to be less then honourable as we all know, there are other ways to improve a team’s play.

Coaches aren’t the only ones placing a value on winning. Players are placing a great deal of value on winning as well. These days, playing for the love of the game appears non-existent. Athletes are now competing to make million dollar contracts. Star players on a team are usually paid the most as they are seen to be the reason for a team’s success or a pillar to build the team around. The top players in the major leagues of sports, NHL, NBA, MLB, etc. have multi-million dollar contracts. Players such as Alexi Yashin and Michael Peca have held out on their contracts as they feel that they are underpaid. Last season, John Leclair went to arbitration and received a one-year, $7 million contract. As athletes grow in popularity, they may also make more money through various things such as endorsements. Player agents are hired on their behalf to negotiate these contracts and endorsements as they try to seek out as much money as possible and increasing their client’s public exposure.

Out of the three groups mentioned, owners and managers place the most emphasis on winning. They are responsible for the overall success of their teams. They are responsible for making decisions such as the hiring and firing of coaches and the trading of players. Teams that are not seen to be competitive try to build their team for the future by acquiring young talent, draft picks, or players that they try to build their teams around. Owners with a competitive team try to make their team more competitive by making key acquisitions through free agency or during the trade deadline. They do all this in hopes of winning the championships, and attracting more fans so that they will make more money. Through all their dealings, winning and making money is the major goal of owners and managers.

To win at a competition, people have participated in injuring others in order to boost their chances of success. An event that occurred prior to the 14 Winter Olympics is one such example in where this occurs. On January 6th, U.S. national figure skating champion Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by a man who hit her on the outside of the right knee with a blunt object. Kerrigan was expected to be a favourite to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games. Two of the people who planned and executed the attack would eventually turn out to be Tonya Harding’s ex-husband and her bodyguard. They both testified that Harding had knowledge of the attack, which she at first denied and then later admitted to. Kerrigan’s right knee was targeted for the attack because it was her landing leg for jumps. Harding would go on to win the Olympic trials, in which Kerrigan did not participate. To plan an attack on a fellow competitor, further demonstrates the lack of sportsmanship and the importance that people place on winning.

Another example can be shown in the 17 Canada and Soviet Union Summit Series. Canada’s victory in game 8 of the series over the Russians would be marred by an incident with Bobby Clarke. In game 7, Bobby Clarke viciously slashed Russia’s star player, Valeri Kharlamov, which resulted in a broken ankle. Canada would go on to win game 7 and game 8. It was later revealed that Team Canada assistant coach John Ferguson told Clarke to do it. Whether Canada would have been able to accomplish defeating the Russians in game 7 and game 8 had Kharlamov been at a 100%, is very questionable, but what it goes to show is the importance that Ferguson and Clarke had placed on winning. Ferguson giving the order and by Clarke’s actions in carrying out of the order shows how much they valued and how important winning was to them. To win a series that many had expected to be a blow-out, Clarke willingly compromised the integrity of Canada’s victory and forever tainted it.

In conclusion, through the actions of athletes, coaches, owners and managers, and the actions of countries or by the people on behalf of their country, winning is shown to be the top priority when competing. Athletes will bend rules and sometimes cheat if they need to, to secure a win. There are different motivations for wanting to win. Athletes who play on teams do it for money. Coaches want to win because it shows that they are competent and successful. Owners and managers also want to win as it also brings them more money. Countries want to win for prestige and bragging rights. Athletes who perform at the international level want to win as it gets them fame and fortune. While there may be many different reasons for wanting to win, it is known that without a doubt the need to win is very important to all that participate in the world of sports today.

Although many people put a huge influence on winning, many if not more put more of an influence on losing, or trying not to. Winning is not a sometime thing; its an all the time thing. You dont win once in a while; you dont do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing Vince Lombardi .

In the Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare illustrates his feelings towards Jews in 17th century England through the use of a commonly known stereotype during the time, the Jewish views of the law. Shylock is the focal point of the play, and acts as the traditional stereotype of the Jew in Elizabethan times. He is comically caricatured as a greedy miser and wears a traditional Jewish gabardine. He is a middle-aged man who has a keenness of observation, a memory for details, and a strong amount of energy. He is well versed in the Bible and is able to draw analogies from various Biblical sources and stories, which relate to the different situations he finds himself in. His manner of speaking shows a bossy, commanding tone with frequent references to the great and ancient names from Scriptures, which he uses to justify his own practices. His speech reveals a cold and calculating mind, reflective of his shallow thinking. Shylock suffers from religious persecution, which is the main theme of the play. Antonio has reviled and despised this Jew, even humiliating him publicly because of his money lending and usury. Shylock believes that his profiteering is not a sin, which is contrary to the Christian belief, held by Antonio, that money should be lent for charity and not for profit. By his profession and his religion, Shylock is seen as the outsider in a happy and fun-loving Venetian society. His being an outsider causes him to be bitter and his humiliation makes him seek revenge. Antonio becomes the target of that revenge, and Shylock uses the letter of the law to try and take a pound of flesh from his enemy. His strict interpretation of the law backfires on him however, and he winds up losing his wealth and barely saving his life. Although he appears in only five scenes, Shylock is a very powerful character, whose love of money has destroyed any natural human feelings.

In Shylock’s opening scene, the animosity between Jew and Christian is presented. Shylock is developed as the accepted stereotype of a Jew in the seventeenth century; he is crafty, cruel, and a mercenary. Shylock is amused that Antonio, a man who spat on him, called him cut-throat dog, and even kicked him, should now approach him for a loan without any show of shame. “I am as like to call thee so again, to spit on thee again, to spurn thee too. If thou wilt lend this money, lend it not As to thy friends,-for when did friendship take A breed for barren metal of his friend?-But lend it rather to thine enemy; Who if he break thou mayst with better face Exact the penalty” (AI sIII 15-1). These humiliations of Shylock and the Jews bitterness over being treated so badly are the reflections of the Jewish-Christian relationship of the times. Shylock speaks in a mechanical manner, which underlines Shakespeares dehumanization of his character. It also implies cruelty and moral degeneration. Shylock says that Antonio is a good man. For him, good refers to wealth and not to kindness or humanity. He stresses the fact that Antonios wealth is all at sea and observes that ships are but boards, sailors but men, suggesting that Antonios money may well be at risk. Shylock represents all that is inhumane and cold. After demurring for some time, Shylock agrees to the loan. Despite his feelings, he will do business with a Christian, for it is profitable for him; but he will not eat, drink, or pray with them. Shylock, therefore, is portrayed as an intruder in a gentile world and an outsider. Shylocks side remarks reveal a deep hatred of Antonio and a lust for revenge. “O father Abram...Pray you, tell me this; If he should break his day, what should I gain By the exaction of the forfeiture? A pound of mans flesh, taken from a man, Is not so estimable, profitable neither, As flesh of muttons, beefs, or goats...To buy his favour, I extend this friendship; If he will take it, so; if not, adieu...” (A.I s.III 157-167). He also resents Antonio because he lends money free, reducing the rate of interest, which he as a moneylender, can charge. Shylock reminds him of his professed superiority by saying, % oughts you said you neither lend nor borrow upon advantage. Shylock then uses Antonios past insults to taunt him and now asks him how a dog could lend him three thousand ducats. Antonio suggests that Shylock should lend the money as he would to thine enemy, imposing the usual terms of a loan. If the money is not repaid on time, Shylock can exact the penalty. Shylock, using the situation to his utmost advantage, pretends to agree with this idea of business, and suggests that no interest will be demanded out of kindness. Pretending that it is a joke, a merry sport, he suggests that if the loan is not repaid, he will cut off a pound of Antonios flesh. Bassanio bridles at this bargain and says, I like not fair terms and a villains mind. Antonio reassures his friend about the improbability of losing all his ships. Antonio accepts Shylocks false act of open kindness.

Salarino and Salanio are amused at Shylocks outrage to his daughter’s elopement, and portray him as a raving fool. They claim he cannot decide which to mourn more--

the loss of his daughter or that of his ducats. Antonio is also contrasted once again with Shylock. Antonio, with no ounce of jealousy, is happy for Bassanios love for Portia; but Shylock cannot take any pleasure at his daughters romance. Antonio does not worry about money, freely borrowing from Shylock to help Bassanio in his pursuit of Portia; Shylock however is driven crazy by the fact that Jessica has stolen his wealth, and he seems to mourn its loss as much, if not more, than the loss of his own daughter. Antonio is as selfless as Shylock is selfish. Once again, information is gained through the conversation of Salarino and Salanio when they report on the news of Antonios wrecked ship and Shylocks state of mind. As Shylock himself enters, they call him and make fun of him. They tease him relentlessly about the loss of his daughter. When the crazed Shylock hears about the loss of Antonios ship, he determines to take his pound of flesh from Antonio when he fails to repay his debt in a timely manner. He tells Salarino and Salanio that Antonios flesh will feed his revenge. Shylock then lists the wrongs done to him by Antonio, all because he is a Jew. In this famous speech of justification for seeking revenge, Shylock asks, Hath not a Jew eyes? ...Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions, fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrongs a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrongs a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villainy you teach me I will execute; and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction (AIII s.I 47-5). He argues that there is no difference between his position and that of the Christians. Shylock claims that he is as human as they are, with hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions. It is significant that he makes no mention of having a heart in this diatribe. It is also intentional and ironic that he claims equality only at the lowest levels of human beings, the basic physical form and pure instinct.

Write your Anti-Semitism in Shakespeare research paper

Elizabethan Christians d Jews, here embodied in Shylock. Although Shakespeare gives a voice to the persecuted minority, who is allowed to claim equal humanity with gentiles, he uses this voice by having Shylock only claim bodily equality. Shylock shuns gentle ways and lacks humility, generosity and charity. Antonio, who characterizes Christians, is gentle, generous, loyal, and has a noble idea of humanity. Shylock is crazier than ever because of the money he is spending in the search for his daughter. He openly states his bitterness when he says, I would my daughter were at my foot, and the jewels in her ear. His harangue against Jessica competes with his delight in the news of Antonios possible ruin. Another Jew, Tubal, plays on Shylocks greed. He raises Shylocks spirits just to deflate them, by changing the subject, first to Antonio, and then to Jessica. Shylock appears to be an outsider even amongst the Jews. It is no wonder that he says he now feels the curse of the Jew.

Salanios message that all of Antonios ships have been lost was followed by the

news that Shylock has been insisting on the repayment of his bond. Shylock has told the Duke of Venice that unless the bond is paid, no future business or contract in Venice will have any value. Therefore, the matter is set for court. In this scene, each character lives up to their personality. Antonio shows his courage and forgiveness; Bassanio prepares to sacrifice his happiness and his life to save Antonio; Portia shows her generosity and her respect for friendship; and Jessica, now a Christian, is fully virtuous. By contrast to these Christians, Shylock the Jew is seen as a totally selfish and vengeful character. Shylock refuses to listen to Antonios pleas for mercy. He states, Ill have my bond. Thou callst me dog before thou hadst a cause, but since I am a dog, beware my fangs. Shylock insists on his pound of flesh. Totally in character, Shylock makes no attempt to justify himself, and refuses the appeal made by the Duke. He has sworn by our holy Sabbath to collect his dues. Bassanio then pleas with Shylock to change his mind, but to no avail. Antonio interrupts Bassanio, saying that one might well ask the wolf why he eats lambs, as try to soften Shylocks hard heart. He compares Shylocks temperament with the images of destructive forces and says that it is useless to appeal to Shylock on the grounds of decency and kindness since his evil differentiates him from all. Bassanio offers Shylock six thousand ducats now, but Shylock will not relent. The Duke makes a Christian appeal for mercy, reminding Shylock How shalt thou hope for mercy, rendering none. Shylock, however, firmly believes that he is doing nothing wrong and answers in legal terms, stating, What judgment shall I dread, doing no wrong? He then claims that the Christians are the ones, who do wrong, treating their slaves abjectly. Significantly, no one answers Shylocks accusations. Shylock is not affected by the eloquence of Portias speech. He ignores and argues with her every offer. He also rejects Bassanios offer of even more ducats. As a result, Bassanio turns to Balthazar (Portia), and pleads with her to stretch the law in Antonios favor. Her reply is that the law is unchangeable. Only Shylock can decide to set the law aside through his mercy. If the law itself is tampered with in this one instance, it will set a precedent, cause many an error, and make Venice an unacceptable place to do business. An elated Shylock praises this wise, young judge as a Daniel come to judgment--yea, a Daniel! O wise young judge, how I do honor thee! The reference here is to the Biblical figure of Daniel who gave justice to Susannah. Just as the suspense and the tension reach their height, Portia produces a legality in the bond by stating, This bond doth give thee here no jot of blood, only a pound of flesh. The wise Portia is now playing upon Shylocks literal interpretation of the law, for which Jews were well known. Shylock is dumbfounded, for he knows he cannot take a pound of flesh without drawing blood. He reverses his stand and is ready to accept the offer of triple the money due. A defeated Shylock prepares to leave, but Portia stops him. She says the law hath yet another hold on you. Any alien who plots against the life of a Venetian may be forced to give half his goods to the citizen, and the other half to the state. Moreover, the life of the alien lies in the mercy of the Duke only. Portias knowledge of the laws of Venice has left Shylock totally defenseless. Portia advises Shylock to get on his knees and beg mercy of the Duke. Before he is asked to do so, the Duke pardons Shylock his life and offers to reduce his debt to the state to a mere fine. The Duke becomes the first picture of mercy in the play. The stingy Shylock, however, is unmoved by this display of mercy, and says, You take my life when you do take the means whereby I live. Antonio then steps in as the merciful one. He asks the court to pardon Shylock of his debt to the state. The half of Shylocks wealth that will go to Antonio will be passed on to Lorenzo at Shylocks . The Jew must also leave all his possessions in his will to Lorenzo and Jessica. Antonios final condition is that Shylock becomes a Christian. Antonio thus fulfills his role as a Christian by trying to save Shylock from damnation.

Although Shylock receives mercy, he pays a high price in his acceptance to become a Christian. His pain and humiliation are immense since he has such a deep hatred for Christianity. His torture increases at the knowledge that the Christian man who has eloped with his daughter will become his heir. A devastated Shylock accepts the conditions and asks permission to leave the court, saying that he is ill. The explanation of the irony that surrounds Shylock, the gentleness, kindness, and friendship of the Christians, in contrast to the stingy and unrelenting nature of the Jew are all perfect examples of why the writing of Shakespeare has lived through the ages. Although anti-Semitism has diminished considerably over time, the stereotypes and characteristics of Jews being stingy and strict with rules and the law has survived even to this day. Shakespeare’s views may have been unfair and cruel, but his writing remains evidence of the power he had over audiences, and the reflection of society’s views on Christianity and Judaism.

He found me weeping bitterly in the hospital room. Whats wrong? He asked with a sweet tenderness in his voice. Baby are you ok?

No i replied bitterly, my sister just died. So just please leave me alone! I stood up my shoulders still shaking, my eyes tear stained. Please just leave me alone right now. Its my only request.

Ok but if you need me remember I am just a phone call away.

Ok. I replied glad that he was leaving. As he left, though, he left a small piece of paper on the table. I didnt get up to see what it was until the next morning. It was a poem.

The small bills go in front and the bigger ones behind. You have to use your head boy! You got to use your mind! When you change that filter, run some oil round the lip. Or else youll fry the motor in the middle of your trip. When I went to school, I walked a mile in the snow. Id shoot some diner on the way home. A pheasant or a doe. If you want to catch the big one, you tie your line just like this. Tease it just a littel. Do not yank too hard or you will miss. Keep your eyes on the road boy! Do not drive too fast! Slow down! Do not tell you grandma about those milk shakes back in town. Treat her like a lady boy. Do it every day of your life. Respect her and take care of her. Mother...daughter...wife.

When I finished reading this my eyes were all teary. I decided to write a poem too.

I love you Grandma said the child. Grandma said I love you too. I love you more said the child. I love you more that you. Well that is an awful lot of love. Grandma smiled then. I love you Grandma most of all. More loudly said the child. Well I love you back as much and more. Grandma smiled again. No grandma you do not understand. I can not love you the most of the most then. Two tiny arms reach out to squeeze. Grandma had no further words. Such love directly akin to Gods unconditional and un reserved.

The Different Types of Computer Crimes and the Harm They Cause

Technology in this world is changing day to day, hour to hour, and minute to minute; a company might believe they have reached the climax of expectations in this world but before they know it, someone has surpassed them and come up with new devices. The truth is that the technology world has grown tremendously in the past six years and we can expect to see nearly three, if not four times that amount within the next two years! This concept, as shocking as it may seem, is quite irrelevant to the number of crimes associated with computers. The problem is that the general public goes on their day to day lives and they do not have the clear idea about the amount of computer crime being committed each day. There can be someone that you may not even know that lives on the other side of the world and this person could be “hacking” into your computer to steal information about you or other confidential documents that you definitely do not want some stranger to view. Many believe everything on their computer is safe from harm, which is like saying the world is flat! That statement has never been more wrong. Many serious computer crimes in this world damage many companies and human beings. Most of these crimes, the general public does not understand, or even have knowledge to what the term “computer crime” means.

There are many crimes that relate to this topic and the true definition for computer crime is; “Computer crimes are any violations of criminal law that involve knowledge of computer technology for their preparation, investigation, or prosecution” (Parker, ). All known computer crimes are relevant to these following roles; object, subject, instrument, symbol (Parker, ). “Objective cases involve any destruction of computers, data, or any

technology laid out in this world”. This would include air conditioning, automobiles, machinery, or any instrument involving a computer like chip. “Subject cases are any crimes that are committed by the theft of computer software” (Software Piracy), fraud perpetuated by changing account balances in financial data (Trojan horse), or fraudulently stealing money from transactions (Salami Shaving). “Instrument cases involve the actual computers tools and instruments”. This crime could be committed through developing and spreading computer viruses over the World Wide Web (WWW). “Symbol cases involve the use of intimidation or deception where an organization falsely claims that they used nonexistent computers or technology” (Parker, ). If you may have not already realized, computer crime involves many different areas. In fact, computers have been involved in many other types of crime as well, including fraud, theft, larceny, embezzlement, bribery, burglary, sabotage, espionage, extortion, attempted murder, manslaughter, pornography, trespassing, violation of privacy, and kidnapping (Parker, ). Many believe that computer crimes are merely crimes that are committed within a computer, but this concept has broadened to realization that many, if not all crimes committed can involve computers and technology.

When looking at computer crimes, there are many different subjects and topics available, from eavesdropping which involves tapping voice wires and spying, to the most serious of crimes which involve software piracy and computer hacking. However, the most common and most serious crimes are placed into these categories; Invasion of personal privacy, salami fraud techniques which are bank account frauds commonly used through steeling money from transactions being made through a bank, telephone toll

fraud, hacking computer intrusion, Trojan horse attacks, software piracy, interference with communications, radio frequency emanation monitoring, and computer virus attacks (Parker, 6). Each of these crimes cause very serious damage to the privacy and finances of both the general public and many industries such as Microsoft, Adobe, HP, Compaq, and virtually any company that has any resemblance to computers. These crimes also cause serious damage to the Government and FBI. According to the Cyber Crime division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a computer security institute surveyed 50 organizations and all together, they reported nearly $456 million dollars in damage due to computer crime in the last year. They also reported a loss of over $1 billion from computer crime within the past 6 years (Garfinkel, The FBI’s Cyber Crime). Although these agencies have a virtually un-breakable firewall that is almost impossible to hack into, there still is a way and someone out there will find the hole to break into their system. So who is it that causes all this damage to the world of computers and why do they do it? According to the Ethics, Computer Crimes, Security and Health Issues, the common profile of a computer criminal is mostly male, somewhere between the ages of 1 and 5, they work mostly with computers, and are generally very brilliant. There major motives behind the crimes they perform are economical, ideological, psychological, and egocentric (Computer Crimes, Ethics). We will get more into the types of people that deal with computer crime later on.

Computer hacking is a specific type of computer crime that almost always involves some type of illegal access others privacy or damage to computer-based property such as files, web pages, or software (Stone, Computer Hacking). This is

4

basically the crime that summarizes all the cyber crimes; computer hacking is the most committed computer crime and is also the most misused term. This is the crime that can go from just being simply invasive and annoying to being illegal. According to the New Hacker’s Dictionary, “a hacker can be defined as; (1) A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary. () One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming. () A person capable of appreciating hack value. (4) A person who is good at programming quickly. (5) An expert at a particular program, or one who frequently does work using it or on it. (6) An expert or enthusiast of any kind. One might be an astronomy hacker, for example. (7) One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations. (8) A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around. Hence ‘password hacker’, ‘network hacker’. The correct term for this sense is a cracker, or a malicious hacker (Stone, Computer Hacking)”. Although these definitions do not relate completely to computer hackers, each person who commits this crime has a desire or characteristic with all these categories.

Now computer hacking can also be a legal and non-criminal action. Companies hire people to break into their systems so that they can test their computers and firewalls to make sure that they have the best protection available. These people are called “good hackers”, or hackers that are doing good deeds for companies. In fact, this is why the

5

term “hacker” is so misused, there are actually more “good hackers” in the world then there are the illegal hackers. That is where the term malicious hacker or “cracker” comes into play. These are the illegal hackers that break into systems and document files to steal information, disrupt files, and destroy important documents. Crackers can also be people to break into systems just to see if they can and end up causing damage while they are inside. These are the criminals and the ones that are doing so much damage to federal and government agencies.

The scary part about this crime is that using the WWW, any person in the World can access the computer that you sit in front of every night before you go to bed, the same computer that you put all you information on, including documents that you would not even let your own spouse look at. It is scary to think of that and you may be saying there’s no way some one would want to break into my computer, what do I have for them to steal or look at? But the fact is there is most definitely someone who breaks into your computer every day. I recently downloaded a program called Zone Alarm which is a firewall program that stops any information or any outsiders from getting into your computer. What is really interesting about this program is that (A.) It first asks you (the user) if you would like to let a download take place, or view a certain web page. It also stops any person from getting into your computer and ask you if you would like to allow them in or if you want to deny their request. (B) The program also tells you how many intrusion alerts their have been on your computer. Or more basically, how many people have been trying to access your computer. (C) It then allows you to track down these intruders and it gives you all the information about this person or company and how to

6

turn them into the authorities. Now the scary part of this is when I downloaded the program, I never dreamed someone would be accessing my computer but by the end of the day, the total number of intrusions on my computer had reached over 00 and was climbing rapidly. Over 00 people and companies had tried to access my computer at home in one single day! That is 1,400 intrusions in one week, 6,000 in a month, and 7,000 intrusions in one year alone! As scary as those numbers may seem, that is just the beginning of hackers and crackers.

So how has it become so easy for strangers to access my computer at home, or for that matter, how is it so easy for human beings to steal information, disrupt confidential files, and steal credit card numbers and bank accounts. Well, we can start by this simple problem, if one has a computer and access to the internet, then they can easily become a computer hacker or even a cracker. A simple search of the term “hacker” on any search engine will give you hundreds of links to illegal serial numbers, and virtually any information and programs to hack into any file, computer, or software. I found programs that you can buy on certain web-sites that will allow you to steal money from any casino in Las Vegas, I found lock picking devices, television smart card readers that allow you to change any information on any computer you want, portable magnetic stripe card readers/writers that will allow you to change any information on stripe cards (I.E. Drivers Licenses), computer keystroke grabbers and memory that will record any button that has been pushed on any keyboard, this is used for things like stealing passwords and tracking all information typed onto the computer. I found devices that allow a person to change their bad credit and give themselves a “good name”, ATM machine hacking equipment; I

7

even found programs to change your grade in a school class. Each and every one of these programs comes with easy step by step instructions that even my grandma could follow. It’s as easy as 1, , and . You find the program, purchase it, and your off to committing some very serious crimes. The effects of these programs are very extreme but are virtually impossible to track and in that case impossible to arrest and prosecute the criminals because the crimes are committed anonymously, basically it’s like the criminal doesn’t even exist. This is why the rate of computer crime has shot up so high in the world. Law enforcements can do anything they want to try and track these criminals but it’s virtually impossible to find them. Any person can do this and it can even seem to them like it was not that great of a crime. For example, an adolescent who never considered picking some ones pocket or physically damaging some one else’s property or home, might be quite willing to steal someone else’s credit card numbers or destroy poorly protected business or government files, since files and credit card numbers are not tangible entities, and damage is done anonymously (Stone, Computer Hacking).

So what can be done to protect yourself from these crimes since the government can’t do much to stop it? For computer related crimes, you can download different firewall programs and protection software. There are many out there, some are free and some cost money to purchase but they are merely around $5 or so. Zone Alarm is one of the most commonly used software and it also seems to work the best out of them all. You can download a free software package that will protect you from any intrusions known to man, or you can pay $.5 for their complete package which will not only protect you from any threat known to man, it will also give you the ability to track the

8

source of any intrusion, it also includes many different kinds of software that will protect your e-mail and even stop those annoying pop-up adds. There are other downloads such as Firewall Analyzer, Shields Up, ZD Net, Cyber Protect, or you can go all out and purchase McAfee or Norton Anti-Virus software packages that protect you from viruses all together. These seem to run from around 0-50 dollars and you can find these programs at virtually any general store such as Wal-Mart, Fred Myer, Office Max, etc… or anywhere on the WWW.

The next serious crime involving computers is Software Piracy. Software Piracy is the unauthorized duplication of computer software. Although many computer users know that this is most definitely a federal crime and it has its punishments, many disregard this importance of treating software as valuable intellectual property (What is Software Piracy). This crime is the one that is most commonly committed and is most often committed without the knowledge of the criminal. It can be classified into six different areas; “(1) soft lifting which is purchasing the software and then loading it onto many different computers contrary to the license terms. For example, loading the software onto your friend’s computer even though this action is not allowed due to the license terms of the product. () Uploading and downloading which is making copies of software available to any user through the WWW. This is mainly used through PP networks which is file sharing software available for free through the internet that will download virtually any program, audio file, video file, or document the user wants to. () Software counterfeiting which is illegal duplicating and selling copies of copyrighted software in a form designed to make it appear legitimate. (4) OEM unbundling which is

selling stand alone software that was intended to be bundled with specific accompanying hardware. (5) Hard disk loading; this involves installing unauthorized copies of the software onto the hard disks of personal computers. (6) Renting which is unauthorized selling of the software for temporary use (Types of Software Piracy)”.

There are many different ways that these crimes can be committed. However, the three most common crimes are soft lifting, uploading and downloading, and software counterfeiting. Each of these crimes have caused major damage to industries such as Microsoft and Adobe. An estimated $1 billion was lost due to counterfeiting, that’s 15% of the industries $80 billion in worldwide sales, and an estimated 7% of the software sold worldwide is fake. That’s five illegal copies for every, one legal copy that is distributed legally. The internet knows no boundaries, a decade ago, small time crooks made small copies of software but now, these small time nobodies have turned into multi-million dollar organizations (Software Piracy Takes Toll on Global Scale, www.usatoday.com). According to the BSA Piracy study, the following amounts in billions were lost to industries and other companies around the world in 000 and 001 (Software Piracy, www.ealaddin.com).

1

So how is this happening? “One way is through agencies and gangs that purchase a single program from a company and then copy the entire package from plastic wrapping to the owner’s certificate of authenticity. Computer scientists then duplicate the software by reading the computer code and copying it onto a master disk” (Ethics, Computer Crimes, Security and Health Issues). Another way is through simple downloading software off the internet. It has become virtually effortless to download $5,000 programs off the internet and through these networks at the mere cost of connecting to the internet. The third way is to just simply purchase one product and then place it onto you family or friend’s computer and saving $10,000 just from doing this. The only problem is that you are basically stealing $10,000 from the company that produced the product.

Industries are doing every thing they can to try and stop this crime but unfortunately, that is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack, there are culprits everywhere in the world. “Microsoft has a search engine that prowls the internet searching for pirated software; they also have hired former federal and police investigators, staged stings and fed information to prosecutors on hundreds of criminal cases. Adobe also has investigators prowling Web sites, hunting for illegal software” (Iwata, Edward. “Software Piracy Takes Toll on Global Scale” USA Today. August 1, 001). Each and every major software distributor has employees working round the clock to find different ways to protect their software from being pirated but this is a never ending problem.

1

Computers and technology have reached an all time high in the past years and that number is expected to multiply by nearly four times that amount within the next two years and unfortunately, this also means that computer crime will also increase

significantly and there is no way to stop it for good. The government can find a way to control it slightly, but they will never be able to erase it. For every file, there is a way to hack into it. For every Software and program, there is a way to Pirate and copy it, and for every computer, there will be crimes that associate with them. You can protect yourself from most crimes, but there is still a high chance that you will be a victim to computer crime, or for that fact, you could even be the criminal and not even know it. That is the sacrifice that we as Americans have to face for are every want and need for new technology.
