Custom Essays on Why teamworking, although a major element of today’s business environment, is not always effective?

Attention Material Have you ever seen geese flying south for the winter? Geese fly in a “V” formation. Have you ever wondered over the reason they employ this formation? By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock of geese can fly at least 71% farther than if its bird flew by its own. Also, whenever a goose falls out of formation, it feels the resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of flying with the flock. Moreover, when the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wing and lets another goose to be the leader. Finally, when a goose is weakened, or even hurt, and falls out of formation two geese fall out and follow him down to protect and help him; they stay with him until he is either able to fly or until he is dead.

Credibility Material Other animals, also form teams but are not, merely, as effective, as geese are in their effort of migration.

Thesis Statement Forming groups and working in teams is the first step in pursuing a result. Effectiveness is the means of obtaining this result.

Preview During this speech I shall enlist all the elements that make teams effective, thus, persuade you why the act of forming and working in teams is not enough.

(Transition Let’s begin by listing the major elements of effective teams.)

BODY

I. Major elements of effective teams. At this point, I shall present each element and explain the difference it crates between effective and ineffective teams. These elements are

• Informal and relaxed atmosphere.

• Much discussion with everyone participating and listening.

• Team is comfortable with disagreement. Criticism is frequent, frank, and relatively comfortable.

• The leader does not dominate, nor does the team defer unduly to the leader.

• Team’s task is understood and accepted by the members.

• Decisions are reached by consensus.

II. Someone might argue that maybe all these elements mentioned before are unnecessary. That teamwork always gives results since it is based in the combined effort of two or more agents, and their results are always far greater than the sum of their individual efforts.

A. This is true; the sum of our individual efforts are always far smaller than the combined effort of these individuals. But, what happens when we do not compare individuals and teams and we compare teams with teams? I can assure you that if, by one team, all the above elements are not being met, then the team with better results will be the one that has satisfied all the elements of effective teamworking.

B. In today’s business environment only the teams that provide results get promoted and rewarded.

CONCLUSION

Summary Statement In conclusion, the mere existence of the team is not enough. Teams must bring valid results, and the only way to obtain them is by working effectively.

Concluding Remarks Whenever in the future you are asked to work in teams remember the example of the geese. This metaphor will act as a guideline for you in order to make you and your team members to perform effectively.
