The crusades were medieval wars that took place between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. The European Christians were trying to regain the Holy Land from the Muslims. By the end of the thirteenth century there had been nine crusades including the Children’s crusade. “The term crusade was later used in reference to military expeditions, sanctioned by popes, against heretics and others. ” The crusades had a visible impact on western Europe.

There were three main causes of the crusades. The first cause was the advance of the Seljuk Turks. Al-Hakim had destroyed the church of Holy Sepulcher in 1010, and Christian pilgrims had free access to holy places. In 1070 the Turks took over Jerusalem, and the pilgrims no longer had freedom. The pilgrims also had home accounts of oppression and desecration. Peter the Hermit took letters to the pope in 1088 detailing the persecution of Christians

The second cause was the weakening of the Byzantine Empire. For seven centuries the Empire was between Europe and Asia. It was used to hold back armies of the enemies. Due to the isolation from the west by the Schism in 1054 the Empire was to weak to fulfill its task. The Bulgars, Patzinaks, Cumans, and the Russians assaulted the European gates. The gates dismembered its Asiatic provinces, and all of eastern Europe would be undone if the Constantinople had fallen

The third cause was the ambition of the Italian cities to extend their rising commercial power. The Normans captured Sicily from the Muslims, and the Christians reduced the Muslim rule in Spain in 1085. The western Mediterranean was now free for Christian trade. The Italian cities grew rich and strong from ports of domestic and transalpine products. The cities also planned on ending Muslim ascendancy in eastern Mediterranean and opening markets of European goods

Several Europeans had a response to the beginning crusades. Gregory VII exclaimed, “I would rather expose my life in delivering the holy places than reign over the Universe ” Pope Urban made the final decision to rescue Jerusalem. He envisioned a Holy War to save Europe and the Byzantine Empire from Islam, and he dreamed of the Eastern Church and Christendom being united under the popes. He also wanted Rome to once again be the capital of the world. From March-October 105 Pope Urban toured northern Italy and southern France looking for leaders and support The historic council met and thousands of people came to hear Urban address to them the “most influential speech in Medieval history.” Urban spoke to the people saying,

A grievous report has gone forth that an accursed race,

wholly alienated from God, has violently invaded the lands of these Christians... On whom, then, rests the labor recovering this territory, if not upon you-you upon whom, above all others, God... Let hatred

therefore depart from among you, let your quarrels end.

Enter upon the road to the Holy Sepulcher, and be assured of the reward of imperishable glory in the kingdom of Heaven

The principal was above feudal loyalty. Europe was made one like never before. All Christendom prepared for the Holy War. Someone in the crowd yelled, “Dieu li volt”- “God wills it.” Urban made this their battle cry . Urban wanted those who undertook the crusade to wear a cross upon their brow or breast. Urban traveled for nine months to preach the crusade to other cities. When he returned to Rome, after two years, he took authority and released crusaders and freed serfs and vassals for the duration of the war. Pope Urban established a new principle of obedience .

The first crusade began in 107. Peter the Hermit spread the news about the crusade, and he recruited peasants from France and Germany. While marching to the Byzantine Empire, the mob burned houses and stole from other people in the towns. The peasants reached the Empire, but they were over powered by Alexius Comnenus, the Emperor. They were sent back across the straits, and they were fought and murdered by other Christians. The peasants had no success over the Turks . Many lords were also recruited for the crusade. The lords were more equipped and disciplined than the peasants. Alexius was willing to allow the lords part of the Holy Land in return for an oath stating that he

regain power over the land in the future. In June 107 the Turks surrendered to the Byzantine forces, and in July 10 crusaders were able to conquer Jerusalem after the murdering of many Muslims and Jews . The first crusade set up the states for the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, the principality of Antioch, and the counties of Edessa and Tripoli .

The third crusade occurred between 118 and 11. Pope

Gregory VIII preached the crusade and Roman Emperor Frederick led the crusade along with English King Richard and French King Phillip II. On the journey to Frederick died. Richard and Phillip

arrived at Acre in 111. The city was taken that July. Richard made a truce with Saladin, ruler of Jerusalem, in 11 for Christians to retain a small part of Jerusalem. The third crusade ended in October 11 .

The fourth crusade was called by Pope Innocent III, and it took place from 10 to 104 . Thousands of French barons and knights began their trip from Italy to the Byzantine Empire . The crusaders were willing to help the Byzantine Empire capture the city of Zara in exchange for a passage to the Holy Land (Wetterau 7). The crusaders were offered money and other goods that they found to difficult to resist. Due to the invasion, Baldwin of Flanders became the first ruler of the new Latin empire of Constantinople. No one gained from this crusade except the Venetians. They regained the Greek Islands and the city of Zara

The children’s crusade was also called the “ ill-fated crusade of 11.” The crusade consisted of unarmed children who were trying to free the Holy Land . There were two children’s crusades in 11. One was led by a ten year old boy named Nicholas, and the other one was led by a twelve year old boy named Stephen. Nicholas preached the crusade at Cologne and recruited over twenty thousand other children, and Stephen along with thirty thousand other children traveled to Alexandria by ship. Both crusades ended in tragedy. When Nicholas and the children arrived in Italy the girls were taken as servants and the boys were sold as slaves. Two thousand children from Stephen’s crusade drowned when their ship sunk in the Mediterranean, and the ones that survived were also eventually sold as slaves when they arrived in Alexandria (Kreis 4).

Feudalism was changed as a result of the crusades. After two centuries of war Jerusalem was still being ruled by the Islamics. The crusades had failed, and Europe had been shattered. In order to finance expeditions to the east, many knights had to sell their properties to a higher manner. They also had to resign their rights. Many peasants sold remission of future feudal dues, and serfs had used the crusades as an opportunity to leave the land and not return to their manors. The feudal wealth and arms were diverted to the east, and the French monarchy power and wealth rose as a result. The Roman Empires were weakened, and the western emperors lost prestige in the Holy Land. Eventually the eastern

Empire was rebuilt in 161, but the former power was never regained .

The culture was also changed as a result to the crusades. In the east the crusaders had learned to tolerate sexual perversions, and public baths and private latrines were also reintroduced in the west. Europeans returned to the old custom of Romans where they have to shave their beards. A new style of dress became known in Europe along with a thousand new arabic words. Oriental romances and secrets that led to improvement of stained glass used in Gothic Cathedrals were also some results. The development of compasses, gunpowder, and printing moved into Europe after the crusades. The biggest result in the culture was the discovery that followers of another faith could be civilized, humane, and trustworthy. This contributed to the weakening of the orthodox belief in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries .

The impact made by the crusades on western Europe had long lasting effects. The first crusade was the only one that showed success. The crusade reduced the number of quarrels and hostile knights in Europe (Kreis 4). However, many lives were lost during the crusades including thousands of children.

Stone Cold Question

. What impressions do you have of shelter?

Think about what he tells us about himself; what else we learn about him; how he speaks and behaves.

Shelter is an extraordinary character, truly fascinating in the most macabre way possible. He appears in the book in the ‘Daily Routine Orders’ chapters, these intersperse the numbered chapters in which Link narrates. He is an ex-army officer; dismissed on medical grounds after twenty nine years in the service. Due to this background he has two traits which are crucial to the story line; bitterness towards authority and an obsession with routine and uniformity.

He tells us about himself in a very self important manner and modesty is clearly not his strong point. He is by no means insane but he is definitely disturbed and his logic is very twisted. He feels that the homeless are leeches and should be erased from society. He undertakes this task and thus the ‘Camden Horizontals’ are recruited.

His sense of humour is as warped as his logic and sociological ideals, he laughs at the fact that he gives his recruits siny shoes and a haircut and how their “…mother must be proud…”.

One gets the impression that Swindells enjoyed crafting Shelter, all the subtle nuances in his speech such as repeating “…by golly…” an uncountable number of times. Very often it is the most diabolical character that one can read into most, why the character has such views, what sort of life he or she might have had. Shelter is a very insular person and has extremely strong views. He is perfectly aware of the fact that others may not share is views never the less he does not see that there is anything wrong with murder as long as it has a purpose, “… cleaning up the streets…”

His army training comes into play when he actually carries out the murders, however never working the same way twice, hiding tracks and working out a perfectly plausible cover is not the work of a commando; it’s the work of a serial killer. He is a Sociopath on all levels; perfectly normal to be with but completely disconnected with society, emotion and any kind of relationship. Put simply he is a logic machine, everything is planned, meticulously executed and no trace of what has ensued is ever present.

Only when he gets personally involved does he slip up. A personal vendetta leads to Shelter pursuing Ginger and then Link in ‘Operation Laughing Boy’. If he had continued on his course of random selection then it is doubtless that Shelter would have ‘succeeded’ in ridding the streets of perhaps another dozen dossers; but when emotion creeps into the mind of a sociopath, mayhem ensues.

Naming his cat Sappho indicates that he is a cultured and intelligent, Sappho of course being a Greek poetess of around 600 BC. He is by no means ignorant or stupid; if he was then he would have been caught after his second killing.

All things considered I feel that Shelter is the most intriguing character in the book and that had Swindells chosen a lunatic with no real purpose, well it would have been an even shallower book. Shelter ands depth, mystery and even a certain element of pity to the book and plot. The order with which he records the murders is exact and yet you feel that he gleans a sort of pleasure from it, like pride almost but far more primal.

Without Shelter this book would have been plain and boring, he is one of Swindells’ finest creations and, in my opinion, is far superior to the other characters in the book.

Question 1-

The definition of history that I found most appropriate was the quote by Gayl Jones. She stated My great-grandmama told my grandmama the part she lived through that my grandmama didnt live through and my grandmama told my mama what they both lived through and my mama told me what they all lived through and we were suppose to pass it down like that from generation to generation so wed never forget. I believe this quote to be very true to the definition of history. Before history was ever recorded, it was passed down orally from generation to generation. Even today history is passed down in families from generation to generation.

Question -

?The story or record of what has happed in the past? is one of the dictionary definition of history. This definition is similar to quote of Gayl Jones. Gayl Jones wrote of history being passed down from generation to generation, like a story, as the dictionary definition stated. Unlike the quote of Gayl Jones, this definition mentions the recording of what happened in the past. I believe that the records and facts of the past are just as important as the stories passed down from the past.

Question -

There have been many uses of history in our world, even today. Edward Carr stated that enabling man to understand society of the past and to increase his mastery over the present society is the dual function of history. George Santayna stated that ?Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.? I think Santayna was trying to say that if you don?t learn of the consequences from peoples mistakes and the consequences from their great accomplishments, than you may make the same mistakes of the past. Indira Gandhi stated ?There are moments in history when brooding tragedy and its dark shallows can be lightened by recalling great moments of the past.? I do agree with this quote but I do not see how it plays a part in the uses of history. Eleanor Homes Norton stated ?There is no reason to repeat bad history.? I think this quote is very similar to that of George Santayna. They both are stating that we should know of mistakes of the past and should never repeat them.

An emotionally complex tale, Monster takes us into the world of the criminal justice system through the eyes of sixteen-year-old Steve Harmon, a high school student with a passion for filmmaking. Steve is on trial for felony murder, a charge that, if proven, carries the penalty of life in prison or death. It is, as his lawyer tells him, as serious as it gets (1). Steve is accused of being a lookout for a drugstore robbery that left the stores owner dead. This trial will change both his outlook on his life and actions and who he is.

As the novel opens, Steve writes from his cell in the detention center and captures the terror of being in prison. It is not about bars and being locked up, he tells us, it is about being alone when you are not really alone and about being scared all the time (4). It is clear that Steve is not a hard-edged juvenile delinquent, but rather an educated, artistic teenage who has landed in a horrific situation. Steve decides to record his trial in the form of a screenplay. Turning his experience into a movie, he hopes, will help him make sense of his situation and stem his overwhelming anxiety. The novel is written principally as this screenplay - a literal account of the legal proceedings - interposed with Steves journal entries, in which he gives voice to his inner turmoil. The two styles draw attention while keeping readers focused on the trial, the overshadowing event that will determine whether Steve has a future or not.

As the trial unfolds we learn that, whether or not he is guilty of murder, he is certainly guilty of associating with unsavory characters. Desiring to be player in his neighborhood, Steve apparently befriended a gang member and a felon. This was his first step toward his problematic situation and a memory he will return to often throughout the trial. Questioning his decision to make friends with these men begins his doubt about where his life is headed and how he got there.

The choices he has made carry immense consequences and Myers never lets up on the severity of Steves situation. Steve is forced into the process of defining himself as he listens to the prosecutor accuse him of walking a moral tightrope (61) and dismissing lawyers efforts to distance him from the other men on trial. During the trial he realizes how closely the other men and he are related. The more time Steve spends in jail, the more he begins to think like them; yet, this puts into perspective his life and how he wants to spend it. It is at this point Steve takes a closer look at his life and decides to change it instead of letting things just happen to him.

This is not a novel of transformation or redemption; it is a harsh coming of age story. After the end of the trial, Steve spends his time filming himself and his neighborhood from different angles in order to find where he fits in and how others perceive him. It is finding himself that will help him achieve his goals and realize where he belongs in life.

The trial in which Tom Robinson was wrongly sentenced by a jury of white men, for the rape of Mayella Ewell, demonstrates how in Maycomb County “people are ugly about folks right at home.” Tom was judged merely by the colour of his skin and not on the evidence put forth by Attitus. Due to the general acceptance that Negros will be treated differently there was a miscarriage of evidence. Tom Robinson is a reflection of the society as a whole. The fact that no one realised the unfair treatment of Tom Robinson made his death much more tragic. Tom was denied justice.

Maycomb County is a classic southern town full of gossip, tradition and burned with a legacy of racism. People only know Tom Robinson through what others say about him. They see him for what they believe he is. There are a number of factors that foster racial prejudice in the County; a sense of superiority, fear and an ignorant mainstream attitude. In Maycomb the residents of the township only associate civilly with people their own skin pigment- they feel they are superior to and therefore callous to the inhabitants with the darker pigment. They judge the “Niggers” by a physical characteristic that they can not control or have any threshold over. The township is also prejudice due to fear of the unknown. They see the Negros as different and are therefore fearful of their own uncertainties. The society is a conservative, narrow-minded one, who dismisses people with prominent unique traits because they fear that they will take over their land, homes, jobs and women. Rather than taking the time to get to know the Negros the “whites” hold resentment toward them. They are defensive, intolerant, ignorant, pragmatics, conceited people who share one view point- that of the mainstream. Everyone believes what everyone else does- they can not draw their own conclusions about people because they fear being named as an outcast. They go with the flow.

These factors have a dramatic impact on the community. As a result the society is divided, people are marginalised, their contribution limited and violence. In the novel only a vast minority of people are empathic towards the Negros. In the trial these people join the “Niggers” as the social outcasts, merely because they have had the courage to stand behind what they believe in, and making their view known. The society has been spilt over the Tom Robinson case, because for the first time people have put their pride on the line. As a result of racial intolerance, the “whites” of Maycomb miss out on that the Negros have to offer them. Just like Tom Robinson they are people with skills, talents, emotions and morals. The “whites” of the County are missing out on what the Negros have to offer. They are missing an opportunity to mingle with great people. Their racial discrimination is taken to far with the occurrence of violence.

Maycomb County is a community with serious issues that need to be addressed. If only they could see that through acceptance, tolerance, compassion and respect there is hope. Hope that one day they can live in unity and benefit greatly from what everyone, regardless of race has to offer. They need to realise that “you never really understand a person until…you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” The “whites” are only doing themselves the injustice.

Down The River With Huck And Jim

Throughout the Mark Twain novel, The Adventures of HuckleBerry Finn, a plain and striking point of view is expressed by the author. His point of view is that of a cynic; he looks upon civilized man as a merciless, cowardly, hypocritical savage, without want of change, nor ability to effect such change. Thus, one of Mark Twains main purposes in producing this work seems clear, he wishes to bring to attention some of mans often concealed shortcomings.

While the examples of Mark Twains cynic commentaries on human nature can be found in great frequency all through the novel, several examples seem to lend themselves well to a discussion of this sarcastic view. In the beginning of the novel, it would seem that both Huck Finn and Jim are trapped in some way and wishing to escape. For Huck, it is the violence and tyranny of his drunken father. Kept in a prison, Huck wishes desperately to escape. Jim feels the need to escape after hearing that his owner, Miss Watson, wishes to sell him down the river-a change in owners that could only be for the worse. As they escape separately and rejoin by chance at an island along the river, they find themselves drawn to get as far as possible from their home. Their journey down the river sets the stage for most of Mark Twains comments about man and society. It is when they stop off at various towns along the river that various human character flaws always seem to come out.

Examples of this would include the happenings after the bringing on of the Duke and King. These two con artists would execute the most preposterous of schemes to relieve unsuspecting townspeople of their cash. The game of the King pretending to be a reformed marauder-turned-missionary at the tent meeting showed that people are gullible and often easily led, particularly when in groups and subjected to peer pressure. The execution of the Royal None such showed another instance of people in society being subject to manipulation. The fact that, after being taken by a poor show they sent rave reviews of it to their friends to avoid admitting they

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Down The River With Huck And Jim

had been conned showed that people in groups are ever afraid of losing status, and will do nearly anything to protect such. Both the King and the Duke, also, showed such a ridiculous degree of

corruptness that it is difficult to believe that all humans arent at least somewhat evil.

Another point made by the author is that of most men being basically cowards. A good example of this was when Col. Sherburn shot the drunk Boggs and the townsfolk came after Sherburn to lynch him. After Sherburn, one man with only a shotgun, held off the immense mob and made them disperse, it was obvious that no individual really had the courage to go through with the lynching.

The idea that people are basically savages, confined for the moment by society, is shown in more than one instance, such as when the group was preparing to hang Huck and the King over their plot to defraud the daughters, or, more obvious, in the war between the Shephardsons and the Grangerfords.

The aspect of people being basically hypocrites is seen at the beginning when Miss Watson displays a degree of hypocriticality on insisting that Huck follow the Widow and become civilized, while at the same time deciding to sell Jim into a hard life down the river.

A final point seems to be that Man is continually fleeing from something. At the end, Jim and Huck found themselves at the end of their journey, neither having anything left to run from as Hucks father was dead and Jim was a free man. It would seem, then that Huck and Jim had run a thousand miles down the river and ended up where they had started from.

From the above examples, one can see some of the authors point in producing Huck Finn. It is apparent that Mark Twain wishes society to realize its shortcomings and the limitations imposed by human nature. He realizes that people will not change, but feels that they should be aware of who they are, of what comes with this thing we call humanity. That is Mark twains main purpose in writing this novel.

Self Assessment

The scripting assignment has been a great opportunity for me to find out my overall mental scripts of how I can put an idea into action. Each assignment that I have finished has given me a better opportunity of recognizing different aspects of my script. Whether it is areas that I excel at or areas that I need to work on, however the most important part that I can take out of my script is the ongoing process through life that I will continue to make changes to my thinking habits in order for something to work.

The first assignment of finishing my script gave me the chance to fill out the process that I take for my scripting process. I did not have as great understanding as I do now on my script because the majority of my own ideas came in the idea formulation and screening process and I did not really have an idea of how to make scripts for planning/finance, startup, setup process, and ongoing operations. However through the later assignments I started to get a better understanding of coming up with scripts. I find it interesting that I still go back to my childhood ways of coming up with ideas by having a strong interest in something and can I improve on it.

The next part of the scripting assignment was to read the Wayne Brown Institute assignment and to revise your scripts. The Wayne Brown Institute Assignment gave me an idea how Venture Capitalist see potentials clients and how they weed out the good investments and the bad investments. The WBI Assignment allowed me to have a better understanding of how VC have a step by step process of analyzing how a good idea can prosper. After reading the assignment I made lots of changes to my own script.

Help with essay on Analysis

Examples that I attached to my second version script were dealing with suppliers and other stakeholders in making sure a successful venture can happen. The WBI was extremely helpful for the latter parts of my personal scripts where I did not have as much exposure.

The third script was the mentor’s script. I had trouble dealing with this one because first I have three people that I consider my mentors and one is unavailable, and the other two did not qualify for the qualifications that is set out by the guidelines of having started up three business. However I did have an uncle who has started up numerous businesses so his input to my script was very important. As a result of the third script I have made a couple changes to my overall script however the majority of the interview I learned more about out his views on how to deal with people. It was very interesting because he stated some of the same points that Peter Thomas stated on what he looks for in starting up a successful business. The part that I found most interesting was he stated that people are the most important part. As a result of this topic I have made changes to my third version script and put in more parts that deal with communication, coordination parts of startup a business. As well I learnt that my mentor had dealt with lots of industry experience in his scripts, which I incorporated into my scripts

Overall I have learnt a lot about my scripts. Scripting is very important to me because it gives me an outline of dealing with ideas and putting them into action. The only question that I do have about scripts is I have not put an idea into action on my own accord yet. However through my revisions of the scripts and my mentor’s scripts, and the guest speakers that have come to our class I have made an analysis on these people on how to come up with a good overall script. However I believe in life that not every thing works for everyone and different ways of thinking and doing things work for some people and not others. So even though I have written down start-up, set-up, scripts and so on, I am almost positive that I will be changing them when I put my own ideas into action. However as of now it does give me a good idea of how to put an idea into action, which is the purpose of every entrepreneur.

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT WORKS

All humans and almost all animals have a tube like digestive system. Each ones digestive tract is specially designed to break down the kinds of food it eats. Our bodies survive by food and water. The nutrients and energy we receive from food allow our bodies to repair itself. However, before food can do any of these things, it has to be changed into a form or substance the body can absorb into the bloodstream. In order for this process to take place, food must be digested with our digestive tract system.

The digestive tract is often referred to as the gastrointestinal tract. The digestive tract of the adult is approximately 0 to 5 feet long. Everything we eat has to be broken down into absorbable nutrients while traveling through this tract, which is why it takes so long for food to fully digest. Food is broken down into microscopic particles, or sometimes referred to as molecules, and is separated by digestive organs into nutrients and waste.

The nutrients are then passed through channels on the digestive systems intestinal wall to the bloodstream, which then distributes them to nourish cells throughout the body.

The digestive system consists of different individual organs, beginning with the alimentary canal and ends with the anus. The actual digestion process starts at the mouth, where amylase, which is found in saliva, starts to break down carbohydrates in food, before it even leaves the mouth. The food then passes down the throat and moves down through the esophagus. After this process, it continues down the digestive tract into the stomach, which is located in the middle of the abdomen. The stomach will then store the food while all the time, mixing it with acids and enzymes, breaking it into much smaller digestible pieces. When it is empty, the adults stomach has a volume of only 1/5 of a cup, but can expand to hold more than 8 cups of food after a full meal has been eaten. The stomach empties into the small intestine, which will digest the food chemically so the body is able to absorb it into the bloodstream.

The liver, gallbladder and the pancreas all help with the aid of the digestion process, by producing enzymes and substances that travel by way of special ducts, directly into the small intestine. The small intestine is made up of three parts, which are the duodenum, the jejunum and the ileum. The inner wall of the small intestine is covered with microscopic fingerlike projections called villie, and the villi are where nutrients are absorbed into the body. Food and water will then enter the large intestine from the small intestine. The large intestine is made-up of three parts as well. The cecum, the colon and then the rectum which ends at the anus. The cecum and the colon are approximately 5 feet long, and the rectum is only about 5 inches long. As the food and water waste products move through the large intestine, the fluids and salts are absorbed in the ascending colon, more water is then removed from the waste materials in the transverse colon and the descending colon will then hold the resulting waste.

By the time the final digestion products get to the rectum, they have become formed solid waste, which we call feces. The feces are stored in the rectum, until the body is ready to eliminate it through the anus.

The digestion process is divided into two forms. The chemical digestion and the physical digestion. The physical digestion involves physically breaking down the food into smaller parts without chemicals changing it into different molecules. This is done with the chewing, tearing and shredding of the food with the teeth and mouth. The stomach muscles also help with this process. The chemical digestion process deals with the breaking down of the large molecules, like protein, starches and fats into smaller, more soluble molecules. Examples are breaking down of proteins into amino acids, starches into glucose and fates into fatty acids. It involves hydrolytic reacted catalyses by digestive enzymes. Enzymes are catalysts, which are produced in our bodies to help speed up some of our body’s reactions. Some parts of the body that help with chemical digestion that are not directly part of the digestive system are the gallbladder, liver, and the pancreas. Even though this is a truly remarkable process, waste, food and particles will still take anywhere from 10 hours to several days before it is completely passed through the rectum as final waste product.

DISEASES, CONDITIONS AND DISORDERS

Almost all humans have some form of a digestive problem or condition at least once in their lifetime. Some conditions such as indigestion are common and although they are uncomfortable, are easy to treat. Other conditions, diseases or dysfunctions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) can be much more serious. They can cause significant discomfort and harm the gastrointestinal system. Inflammatory bowel diseases are a group of disorders that cause the intestines to become inflamed. The inflammation lasts a long time and usually comes back over and over again. More than 600,000 Americans have some kind of inflammatory bowel disease every year. Symptoms of an inflammatory bowel disease are abdominal cramps and pain, diarrhea, weight loss and bleeding from your intestines. Two kinds of inflammatory bowel disease are Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. Crohns disease usually causes ulcers in the small and large intestines. The most common complication of Crohn’s disease is blockage of the intestine. Blockage or stricture happens when the disease thickens the bowel wall with swelling and scar tissue. The intestine passage way becomes smaller and smaller, until it is completely closed. Fistulas are a common complication of this disease. Fistulas happen when ulcers in the intestine break through the intestine wall making tunnels into tissues of the bladder, vagina, or into the skin. Fistulas happen frequently around the anus and rectum.

Ulcerative colitis usually causes ulcers in the lower part of the large intestine, often starting at the rectum. About 5 percent of people with ulcerative colitis develop colon cancer. The risk of cancer increases with the duration and the extent of involvement of the colon. For example, if only the lower colon and rectum are involved, the risk of cancer is no higher than normal. However, if the entire colon is involved, the risk of cancer can be as much as times the normal rate. Sometimes precancerous changes occur in the cells lining the colon. These changes are called dysplasia. People who have dysplasia are more likely to develop cancer than those who do not. Doctors look for signs of dysplasia when doing a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy and when examining tissue removed during the test. The exact causes of IBS are not known. The disease may be caused by a germ or by an immune system problem. You dont have to worry about your family members catching the disease from you, because it isnt contagious. However, inflammatory bowel disease does seem to run in families. There are a couple of ways to diagnose IBS. Your bowel movements may be tested for germs and or blood. The doctor will usually look inside your intestines with a sigmoidoscope or a colonoscope. With these procedures, the doctor uses a narrow flexible tube to look directly inside your intestines. This is done when a Doctor performs a colonoscopy. There are several ways to treat IBS. The best thing you can do is take good care of

yourself. Its important to eat a healthy diet. Depending on your symptoms, the doctor may ask you to cut down on the amount of fiber or dairy products in your diet. In addition to eating well, you need to get enough rest. Its also important that you learn to manage the stress in your life. There are many patients that become depressed when they are forced to deal with IBS on a regular basis, therefore, some will be prescribed an anti-depressant. Some of the medications used to treat IBS are sulfasalazine, olsalazine and mesalamine. An antibiotic, such as metronidazole may help in killing germs in the intestines, especially if you have Crohns disease. Sometimes even prednisone is Prescribed. If you have severe IBS you may need to take powerful medicines called immunosuppressants. If your ulcerative colitis becomes so severe that it cant be helped by medicines, it may be necessary to remove part or all of your colon surgically, however, Crohns disease usually isnt helped with surgery. So, as you can see, IBS is manageable in most patients, however can be very debilitating in others. There are even those that have such a severe condition, that they are permenately labeled as disabled, due to the fact they are unable to perform normal daily activities.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder, which severely impacts the way 1% of people worldwide think, feel, and act. The term comes from the Greek, schizo meaning ‘splitting’ and phrenia meaning ‘of the mind’. Therefore schizophrenia literally can be defined as a split mind. This disorder makes it hard for a person to differentiate between real and imagined experiences. It weakens their abilities to think logically, express normal emotions, and behave properly in social situations. Schizophrenia is a serious thought disorder, which affects one’s work, family, social life and an individual’s capacity to function. It is extremely draining on the ill person, as well as the people who care for them.

In 180 John Haslam and Philip Pinel observed first symptoms. As time went another man by the name of B. Morel came up with a term demence precoce, which he observed in little boy. But it was still not until the 1800’s when a German psychiatrist, Dr. Emil Kraepelin had actually categorized the subtypes of a single syndrome. The three subtypes were hebephrenia, catatonia, and paranoia. He was mistaken when he said that this syndrome was incurable and early onset. In the 0th century a Swiss psychiatrist Dr. Eugen Bleuler had a different idea where he explained that schizophrenia might in fact be curable and possibly manifested later on in life. He was the one that explained that schizophrenia meant split of the mind and not split of personality. His four primary symptoms included loosening of associations, ambivalence, autism, and affective disturbance (Nietzel, Speltz, McCauley, Bernstein, 18). While Europeans used Kraepelin’s criteria, North Americans used Bleuler’s. In 15, K. Schneider had conducted a research and classified delusions and hallucinations as primary symptoms of schizophrenia.

During the last half of the nineteenth century different subtypes of what we now call schizophrenia were described as separate diseases. Paranoid psychosis was characterized in 1868, hebephrenia in 1871, and catatonia in 1874 and were all grouped together by E. Kraepelin. This group was given the name dementia praecox. Bleuler changed the name to schizophrenia in 111.

The differentiation of the subtypes is based exclusively on the symptoms of the illness. Paranoid schizophrenia is characterized by delusions and/or hallucinations. Hebephrenic schizophrenia has as its predominant symptoms disorganized speech, disorganized behavior, and flat or inappropriate affect. Catatonic schizophrenia is diagnosed when the outstanding features of the disease are behavioral disturbances, such as posturing, rigidity, stupor and often mutism. Also simple schizophrenia is characterized by an insidious loss of interest and initiative, withdrawal, blunting of emotions and the absence of delusions or hallucinations.

Another method of subtyping schizophrenia that has been used by researchers divides patients into those with positive symptoms, and those with negative symptoms. The term positive signifies those symptoms which are present but should be absent. Negative symptoms on the other hand, indicate symptoms which are absent but should be present. This subtype has been elaborated into type I (those with “positive” symptoms) and type II (those with “negative” symptoms) by Dr. Timothy Crow and his colleagues in London who claim that these are separate diseases. Type II is a subtype of schizophrenia that most resembles traditional brain diseases.

Some of the positive symptoms of schizophrenia include

• Delusions- false, strong beliefs

• Hallucinations- hearing, seeing, or sensing something that is really not there

• Thought disorder- thoughts and speech are jumbled that a person thinks someone is interfering with their mind

Negative symptoms

• Loss of drive- lack of drive and motivation which is part of illness and not laziness

• Blunted emotions- ability to express emotions are lost as well as lack of response or inappropriate response

• Social withdrawal- fear with interacting with others because they may harm you in some way

• Lack of insight- their experiences with delusions and hallucinations are so real that they deny they are ill and therefore refuse treatment

Schizophrenia is more common than other genetic conditions such as

Huntington’s disease or PKU. It is more common than multiple sclerosis, six times more common than diabetes and sixty times more than muscular dystrophy. Not all schizophrenics suffer same illnesses but they do show similar symptoms.

There is no one single cause for schizophrenia. Family relationships, environment, biochemical, and genetic factors are included. Studies with twins have proved to us that genes are involved. Genes are a critical part in determining what you will inherit.

Brain activity is another important element. Devices like CAT scans, MRI’s and PET scans have allowed scientists to study the brain and its function. They found abnormalities in he brain, which reveal that schizophrenia may or may not be hereditary. Overall chemical reactions are lower but dopamine levels are higher in the left side of the brain than normal. It is pointing to some nutritional deficiencies of the neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters enable neurons to communicate and are essential to the working part of the brain. Some of the examples are serotonin, dopamine, and acetylcholine, which maintain homeostasis. Too much or too little of these chemicals in the brain will throw off the normal function of the brain. If the proper enzymes are not responding to the overflow of these neurotransmitters, a poisonous substance will build up. It will penetrate into the blood and interfere with the other messengers of the body for proper contact. To prevent neurotransmitters from being disturbed and for proper functioning, vitamins like B1, zinc, Vitamin C, E, thiamine, and folic acid are administered. There has been evidence on reduced flow of the blood in the frontal cortex in schizophrenics vs. non- schizophrenics. Pure adrenochrome is a poisonous form of adrenaline that is left in the body and if it is not converted into leuco- adrenochrome with the help of the vitamin C, it will leave the subject anxious and tense. Adrenochrome is primarily changed into adrenolutin, another poisonous form of adrenalin and will cause changes in behavior. If adrenochrome is present there will not be enough GABA. GABA is a regulator allowing for the proper message sending between neurons. The neurons will fire without a break and the result will cause patients to be irritable.

There are visible physical changes in the brain as well. Enlarged ventricles of the brain will, in turn decrease the cortex that is adjacent brain tissue. Other research also shows difference in weight of the brain. The limbic is smaller in size, a part of the brain that is involved with feelings such as anger, joy, and sexual arousal. Family relationships show no evidence of schizophrenic onset however, patients with the disorder are sensitive to family tensions and typically associated with relapse. We also should consider the environment. Schizophrenia occurs more frequently among people in the lower social class. They live in poverty rather than luxury. They tend to have lower paying jobs, lower salaries, occupy less prestige positions in the society.

A person that is diagnosed with schizophrenia has many problems which he/she has to face that for the most part a normal person doesn’t have to worry about. Employment is an area of particular difficulty for those with the illness. Work of any kind is a practical impossibility. Homelessness is another major problem faced by schizophrenics. The breakdown of family relationships or a simple urge to isolate oneself can all lead to homelessness. SANE estimates that 40 percent of homeless people suffer mental illness of some kind; many of these are schizophrenics. Once homeless, the vicious cycle of downward social drift rapidly manifests itself. The abuse of drugs and alcohol is also very common throughout the sick people. While it is perfectly true that people in close and stable families or with caring and responsible friends do suffer these problems, they are far more pronounced among those living rough, in cities particularly.

Although many people say that schizophrenia occurs equally in men and women, that generalization neglects some important gender differences in this disease. Most striking is the earlier age of onset for men, which in the United States occurs two to three years earlier than in women. An analysis of a group of 17 or 18 year old individuals with schizophrenia will reveal four or five males for every female.

Schizophrenia is also a more serious disease in men than it is in women. Men do not respond as well to antipsychotic drugs, they require higher doses of the drugs, they have a higher relapse rate, and their long-term adjustment is not nearly as good as women’s. There are, of course, many women with schizophrenia who have had a severe course and many men who have done well, but statistics clearly show that schizophrenia occurs earlier and in more severe form in males.

The reasons for such gender differences are still unknown. It should be noted that both infantile autism and childhood schizophrenia also have a strong predominance for males, and that male fetuses generally are known to be more susceptible to environmentally caused problems such as infections. The fact that males get schizophrenia both younger and more severely, then, may simply be another reflection of Mother Nature’s dictum that in many ways men are the weaker sex. Another speculation about why schizophrenia might be more severe in males is the possibility that female sex hormones (estrogens) may exert an antipsychotic effect and be protective. It is also possible, although unlikely, that schizophrenia resembles diabetes in having two major subgroups an early-onset, more severe variety that affects mostly men, and later-onset, less severe variety more likely to strike women.

Another facet of male-female differences in schizophrenia is the effect of the menstrual cycle on the disease in some women. Although it has not been sufficiently studied, clinicians and families have noted for many years that some women with schizophrenia have a worsening of their symptoms in the days immediately preceding their menstrual period. This is almost certainly caused by the reduction and flow of hormones during the cycle, and lends further support to theories linking male-female differences in schizophrenia to hormonal differences.

It is believed that childhood schizophrenia is simply an early version of the adult disease, although much rarer. Approximately two males are affected for every female. Only about two percent of individuals with schizophrenia have the onset of their disease in childhood although that percentage varies, depending on where one fixes the childhood-adult line. Schizophrenia beginning before age 5 is exceedingly rare and between ages 5 to 10 it increases slowly. From age 10, schizophrenia increases in incidence until age 15, when it begins its sharp upward peak as the adult disease.

The symptoms of childhood schizophrenia are very similar to those of adult schizophrenia with the predictable expectation that their content is age-related. For example, one study of young children with schizophrenia reported that the source of auditory hallucinations was frequently believed to be pet animals or toys and that “monster themes were common…. As age increased, both hallucinations and elusions tended to be more complex and elaborate.” The other distinguishing feature of childhood schizophrenia is that the affected child also often has one or more of the following seizures, learning disabilities, mild mental retardation, neurological symptoms, hyperactivity, or other behavioral problems.

Like adult schizophrenia, childhood schizophrenia is thought to have some genetic roots, although their relative importance is unclear. It is also unknown that these children have an excess number of minor physical abnormalities and mothers’ history of having had excess pregnancy and birth complications. The fact that childhood schizophrenia is a brain disease has been demonstrated by the findings of EEG abnormalities on electroencephalographs and enlarged cerebral ventricles on MRI scans.

Childhood schizophrenia is treated with the same antipsychotic medication used for adult schizophrenia. A follow-up of ten children with this disease from fourteen to thirty-four years after its onset found them still diagnosed with schizophrenia but with relatively few delusions or hallucinations. Instead they tended to be quiet and withdrawn with poverty of thought and lack of drive. A minority of children with schizophrenia will recover can do quite well as adults, but what percentage this constitutes is uncertain. It is generally thought that the earlier the age of onset of schizophrenia, the worse the outcome is likely to be, but there are major exceptions to this rule.

Just as there is a form of schizophrenia that begins early in childhood, there is also a form that begins later in life. Late on-set schizophrenia is variously defined as beginning after the age of 40 or 45. Almost all studies of it have been done by Europeans, with little interest having been shown by American researchers.

Clinically, late-onset schizophrenia is similar to the earlier- onset variety except for having a predominance of females affected; having more schizoid and paranoid personality traits in the person before he/she becomes sick; and having more paranoid delusions and more visual, tactile, and olfactory (smell) hallucinations. Neuropsychological tests and MRI scans shows deficits similar to early- onset schizophrenia. The other way in which late- onset schizophrenia differs is in having a more chronic course and less favorable prognosis that would be expected that the later the onset of the disease, the better the prognosis is likely to be.

The most successful treatment at this point in time is medication. These medicines were discovered accidentally and now carry a large responsibility by changing the state of mind. Antipsychotic drugs are used and these drugs are available in different forms such as liquid and tablet form. Scientists are not completely sure why they work but they are known to change chemicals in the brain to slow down the activity rate. Some of the drugs prescribed include, Proxilin, Mellaril, Thorazine, Haldol, Moban, and Clocaril. Not all patients respond to the medications so the best drug is found by trial and error. Many of the medications cause side effects. They include allergic reactions, weight gain, and shakes but overall, for the most part they keep the ill ones out of the hospital. It reduces symptoms of the hallucinations and delusions bring the person to a calm and ground state.

Psychotherapy is unquestionably needed to go hand in hand with medication. Patient has to understand what is happening to them and needs to learn to deal with this aspect. Professionals that work with the disordered patient train him/her to build self-esteem and self-confidence. Other programs help patients learn basic skills like expressing needs and interacting appropriately. Sometimes if the patient is released from the hospital and put into a community, they may lose that training. In that case, group therapies are available to the patient to enable him/her to adjust. Group therapy is much cheaper than one on one.

Schizophrenia is a problem for family members such as brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, uncles, aunts, grandfathers, and grandmothers. They may all be profoundly involved in the care of family members with schizophrenia. Family members may be extremely embarrassed by the psychotic behavior of their ill relative. A common reaction is to move as far away from the family home as possible.

Individuals with schizophrenia frequently occupy an inordinate amount of their family’s energy and time, leaving little for other family members. When a person develops schizophrenia, other family members may lose a relationship. The family members who did not develop schizophrenia may develop survivor guilt. The siblings or children of individuals with schizophrenia often try to compensate for their ill family member by being as perfect as possible. Most children and siblings of individuals with the disease are themselves haunted by a fear that they too will develop the illness. As an interviewee said, “Growing up with a mentally ill mother was oppressive and worrisome and it interfered with the development of my sense of self. I was terrified that I was like my mother and therefore had something wrong with me.”

Schizophrenia changes family relationships very heavily. Husbands and wives whose spouse becomes ill often must become their spouse’s parent. There are many things that family members can do to ease some of the burden of having relative with such a harsh disease. Education is most important, and this should always include even small children in the family whose ability to understand is much greater than most adults assume.

There is, as yet, no simple lab test to make a diagnosis. Therefore, the diagnosis is based on the symptoms - what the person says and what the doctor observes. To reach a diagnosis of schizophrenia, other possible causes such as drug abuse, epilepsy, brain tumor, thyroid or other metabolic disturbances, as well as other physical illnesses that have symptoms like schizophrenia, such as hypoglycemia and Wilsons disease, must be ruled out. The condition must also be clearly differentiated from bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder (see Glossary). Some patients show the symptoms of both schizophrenia and manic depression. This condition is termed schizoaffective disorder. Its relation to schizophrenia is unclear at present.

No matter what happens during the first visit to the doctor, the diagnosis of schizophrenia usually takes a long time. This is because it can be a very difficult diagnosis to make the symptoms necessary for diagnosis either go unrecognized, or do not show themselves fully, until the illness is advanced. There are also many differences among individuals in the way in which symptoms present themselves. Most doctors, well aware of the stigma that still surrounds this illness, dont like to voice their suspicions until they are sure that this diagnosis is correct.

If your doctor does diagnose schizophrenia, do not assume that he or she has ruled out the possibility of another illness. Do not hesitate to ask about other illnesses and ask on what grounds the doctor has determined that schizophrenia is the problem. Where an illness as confusing and variable as schizophrenia is concerned, you should ask for a second medical opinion and a psychiatric referral, whether or not you are satisfied with your doctors response. A request of this nature is perfectly acceptable. Do not feel that the doctor will take it as a personal criticism.

Most families reported that a crisis or psychotic episode - that is, a severe break with reality - occurred a few months to a year after they began to notice unusual behavior. Some said, however, that the crisis occurred with little or no warning.

During a crisis episode, your relative will exhibit some or all of the following symptoms hallucinations, delusions, thought disorder, and disturbances in behavior and emotions. Families who have been through these psychotic episodes warn that no amount of preparation can fully protect you from the shock, panic, and sickening dread you will feel when your relative enters this stage of schizophrenia. Understand also that your relative may be as terrified as you are by what is happening voices may be giving life-threatening commands; snakes may be crawling on the window; poisonous fumes may be filling the room. You must get medical help for your relative as quickly as possible, and this could mean hospitalization. If your relative has been receiving medical help, phone the doctor or psychiatrist immediately. Ask which hospital you should go to and for advice about what to do.

Dont shout. If your relative appears not to be listening to you, it may be because other voices are louder. Dont criticize. Your relative cannot be reasoned with at this point. Dont challenge your relative into acting out. Avoid continuous eye contact. Dont block the doorway. Dont argue with other people about what to do.

It is far better, if possible, to have your relative go to the hospital voluntarily. If you do not think your relative will listen to you, see if a friend can talk the person into doing so. Some have found that presenting their relative with a choice seemed to work. Will you go to the hospital with me, or would you prefer that John take you? Such an approach may serve to reduce the persons feeling of helplessness. Offering choice, no matter how small, provides some sense of being in control of the horrible situation in which they find themselves.

Schizophrenia is not only hard for a patient to live with but for families of the patient as well. Medication has made treatments a lot easier and patients don’t have to spend much time in hospitals. It is crucial for families to learn how to build trust and be in contact with a patient in order to offer the support to the ill person that they so desperately require. My family had a first hand experience with a schizophrenic. It was hard on all of us, especially when they did not know much about the illness or its treatments in Russia. They did not want my great-grandmother in the hospital because she was unruly. Giving her medication was a constant struggle each time it was administered to her. I remember being about and watching her sit in a chair with no back for five-six hours at a time with no motion. She would sit in a corner of the room and mumble to herself. I remember thinking “What is wrong with her?” I never understood or knew what she had; I only could assume she was crazy. I remember asking her what she was mumbling and she responded “I inherited 5.5 million rubbles and I will give you some part of it when you’re older.” She also said that the President of Russia wanted to marry her. She had gone to the red house looking for him. The police had taken her to the station and questioned her, ultimately realizing that she belonged in the hospital. She never seemed to be violent, although sometimes she gave me a sense of fear because she would sit in the dark and stare at one point. I felt bad and tried to talk to her but reaction was unpleasant. My great-grandmother never wanted to eat.

This experience emotionally affected me in a positive as well as a negative light. It was hard to watch her suffer, as much as she did. I feel that ultimately I learned to be more empathetic to people with those types of disorders.

Although schizophrenia is a tragic disease, with the advances today there is definitely hope for it. Recovery can be successful if the proper steps are taken. Knowledge of this mental illness is crucial to understand and cope with. Getting involved with the patient to help increase their self-esteem is most important of all. Different forma of treatments are available, such as drugs and supportive psychotherapy. Our immediate concern should be to open lines of communication and to express the concern. Optimistic attitude is needed because being pessimistic will not lead us anywhere.

a) The role of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is an independent statutory authority that administers the Trade Practices Act 174 and the Prices Surveillance Act 18. It operates nationally for the enforcement and administration of competition and consumer protection laws. Changes to legislation have meant that the ACCC now has new regulatory powers in sectors such as telecommunications industries, electricity and gas, and they have begun to focus on the small business sector which has recently undergone changes. With this continued growth in responsibility, the ACCC is obligated to inform the public so that they are aware of their rights and responsibilities under the law.

The commission administers the Trade Practices Act 174 which covers

anti-competitive and unfair market practices. These include

i) the misuse of market power - where a business uses its power in a market to damage or dispose of a competitor or to prevent another competitor from entering the market.

ii) exclusive dealing - where a supplier tries to restrict who its customers can deal with

iii) resale price maintenance where the supplier tries to control the price at which the goods can be resold

mergers and acquisitions which have the potential to decrease competition within a market

product safety and liability.

The Act aims to promote fair trading and competition within the market and to protect the consumer from unscrupulous business practices. The ACCC takes complaints about suspected breaches of or inquiries about the Trade Practices Act at offices throughout Australia.

b) Phases in the Business Life Cycle

There are 4 phases in the business life cycle and each has its own special features and challenges. They are

establishment

growth

maturity

post-maturity

Establishment Phase

The first stage in the life of a business is its birth. Recently established businesses are vulnerable as their hold on life is quite precarious. The overriding concern is to get the business on a solid foundation. This requires enough sales to be generated to bring in the much needed income, which will be used to pay expenses and to generate a positive cash flow.

Establishing a business is not always easy. There are a number of problems that need to be solved at the establishment phase. To overcome these problems the aspiring business owner needs to become involved in some basic planning. Detailed planning imdertaken when establishing the business can help greatly reduce the risk of failing and becoming just another business failure statistic.

Growth Phase

The second phase is a time of accelerating growth. Sales increase and the cash flow is normally positive. A customer base has been established with regular clients accounting for approximately 80% of total sales. Loyalty to the business is strong, with many of these businesses taking on the culture of an extended family. The business has a good reputation in the community and owners develop a sense of pride in the products and personal service on which the business was built and flourished. However, with growth comes complexity, responsibility and the need for long-term planning.

During the growth phase the business must continually improve its competitive edge. Failure to do so will see competitors take away customers and the growth will stall. Owners tread a fine line in attempting to do this - a desire not to radically alter a successful formula while at the same time restructuring sufficiently to match what the competitors are doing.

Maturity Phase

This third phase of the business cycle presents unique challenges to the owner. It requires a great deal of rethinking about how the business should be operated to guarantee survival. The owner realises at this time that the business could easilt lose the energy, enthusiasm and vitality of its earlier times. A sense of complacency often envelops the business affecting both management and staff. What is now required is a more formal, professional approach to planning.

With such a realisation may come the need to completely restructure and reorganise the business, which can sometimes be quite a painful experience. The business loses its family atmosphere and is replaced with a more clinical, professional culture. The size of the organisation dictates a more formal organisational structure. The difficulty is to introduce these changes without destroying entrepreneurial spirit that laid the foundation for the businesss success.

Post Maturity Phase

Once a business reaches this, the final stage, it is faced with a number of possible outcomes, these being

1. Steady State - to keep the business operating at the level it has been during the maturity phase.

. Decline - falling sales and profits ultimately resulting in business failure.

. Renewal - increasing sales and profits due to new growth areas.

The post maturity phase represents many opportunities but also many threats. The decisions made by the owners will be crucual for the future survival of the business. By constantly monitoring the business environment, the business owner should be able to select the most appropriate path for the business to take.

Steady State

The business is neither declining nor expanding. Such a business is satisfying customer demand and maintaining profit levels. It displays some of the characteristics of a business in the maturity phase. One significant difference, however, is that it does not continue expenditure on research and development. The owner is more content to produce what it has in the past and relying on marketing replacement products.

Eventually the business environment will change and the business will be adversely affected. Perhaphs customers tastes change or new competitors enter the market with superior products or more efficient methods of production and cheaper products. Ultimately, this steady state level becomes very unstable and the business stagnates. It eventually loses sales and its competitive edge. When this occurs the business enters another phase of the business life cycle - decline.

Decline

As customers stop buying the businesss products the cash flow will be seriously affected. Eventually profits will also decline. This process of decline becomes difficult to reverse for the following reasons

1. It becomes difficult to borrow money because financial institutions are reluctant to lend money to high risk businesses.

. Suppliers will restrict their credit facilities and may insist on cash payments.

. Products become obsolete leaving the business with unsold stock.

4. Well qualified employees may being to leave and seek better opportunities.

Renewal

Business decline can be avoided by carefully planned strategies which result in new markets being tapped and satisfying previously unmet demand. The business undergoes a revival. Sales, cash flow and profits all begin to increase once again. Even a business in decline can be turned around and placed on a path of renewal. It is very difficult to accomplish, takes enormous effort by both owners and employees, but it is possible.

The key to achieving a long-term, sustainable recovery in sales is to focus production on what the customers are presently demanding - even if this means abandoning once successful products. As well, an extensive market research program neets to be undertaken to assist in the forecasting of future consumer trends. The more successful the forecasting the more able the business is to be proactive, that is, it can anticipate and plan for future changes. Businesses that tend to be reactive, that is, respond to changes after they have occurred, usually respond too late and lose valuable market share. Renewal is as much about planning and timing as it is successful marketing strategies.

c) Business Responsibilities to its Stakeholders

There are a number of stakeholders in a business. A stakeholder is any group or individual who has an interest in or is affected by the activities of a business.

Workplace violence is an issue that everyone who is in the labor force should be aware of. Regardless of the industry or the organization, employees, supervisors, managers and owners should take precautions and take note that workplace violence has many forms and can happen at any time.

Violence in the workplace is a serious safety and health issue. Its most extreme form, homicide, is the third-leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), there were 6 workplace homicides in 001 in the United States, out of a total of 8,786 fatal work injuries. A total of ,886 work-related fatalities resulted from the events of September 11th. Excluding these fatalities, the overall workplace fatality count was 5,00 for 001 (Bureau of Labor Statistics (00)). National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, 001).

What is workplace violence? Workplace violence is violence or the threat of violence against workers. It can occur at or outside the workplace and can range from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and homicide, one of the leading causes of job-related deaths. However it manifests itself, workplace violence is a growing concern for employers and employees nationwide (www.osha.gov).

Who is vulnerable to workplace violence? Some million American workers are victims of workplace violence each year. Workplace violence can strike anywhere, and no one is immune. Some workers, however, are at increased risk. Among them are workers who exchange money with the public; deliver passengers, goods, or services; or work alone or in small groups, during late night or early morning hours, in high-crime areas, or in community settings and homes where they have extensive contact with the public. This group includes health-care and social service workers such as visiting nurses, psychiatric evaluators, and probation officers; community workers such as gas and water utility employees, phone and cable TV installers, and letter carriers; retail workers; and taxi drivers (www.osha.gov).

What can and should employers do to protect against workplace violence? The best protection employers can offer is to establish a zero-tolerance policy toward workplace violence against or by their employees. The employer should establish a workplace violence prevention program or incorporate the information into an existing accident prevention program, employee handbook, or manual of standard operating procedures. It is critical to ensure that all employees know the policy and understand that all claims of workplace violence will be investigated and remedied promptly.

In addition, employers can offer additional protections such as the following 1. Provide safety education for employees so they know what conduct is not acceptable, what to do if they witness or are subjected to workplace violence, and how to protect themselves. . Secure the workplace. Where appropriate to the business, install video surveillance, extra lighting, and alarm systems and minimize access by outsiders through identification badges, electronic keys, and guards. . Provide drop safes to limit the amount of cash on hand. Keep a minimal amount of cash in registers during evenings and late-night hours. 4. Equip field staff with cellular phones and hand-held alarms or noise devices, and require them to prepare a daily work plan and keep a contact person informed of their location throughout the day. Keep employer-provided vehicles properly maintained. 5. Instruct employees not to enter any location where they feel unsafe. Introduce a “buddy system” or provide an escort service or police assistance in potentially dangerous situations or at night. 6. Develop policies and procedures covering visits by home health-care providers. Address the conduct of home visits, the presence of others in the home during visits, and the worker’s right to refuse to provide services in a clearly hazardous situation (www.osha.gov).

How can and should employees protect themselves from workplace violence? Nothing can guarantee that an employee will not become a victim of workplace violence. These steps, however, can help reduce the odds 1. Learn how to recognize, avoid, or diffuse potentially violent situations by attending personal safety training programs. . Alert supervisors to any concerns about safety or security and report all incidents immediately in writing (www.osha.gov).

As noted in the previous paragraphs, workplace violence is a serious matter. There is no industry, person, job or position that is not vulnerable to the negative physical, emotional and verbal abuse that is associated with workplace violence. As employees, we should do everything in our power to avoid situations of workplace violence and as employers we should do everything possible to combat workplace violence in our business.
