In the novel Night, Elie Wiesel gives a heart-wrenching personal account of life in concentration camps. As a young boy he was deep in his faith, and unknown to him, that faith would soon be challenged. When he was only fourteen, his nightmare began. As Nazi troops entered his town, they made all the Jewish families move into a ghetto. Once a week groups would be taken away in trucks. Elie and his family were the last group to be deported. They were put in cattle cars with only two loaves of bread and a bucket of water. The ride lasted three days without a stop. When the train finally stopped it was at Birkenau. There they were inspected and those who weren’t strong went to the crematories. There Elie and his father were separated from his mother and sisters. They were never seen again. After Birkenau, he and his father got deported to Auschwitz. There he was branded with the number A-771. That number was to stay with him for the rest of his life. He spent a long time in Auschwitz. The last camp he was sent to was Buna. There he stayed until his liberation. While he was there, his foot got extremely infected. After he had surgery, he had the option of staying in the infirmary until he was completely healed, because the camp was to be deserted, but Elie wouldn’t stay behind while his father left. Had he stayed he would have been liberated. When they deserted the camp, they went to Buchenwald, another concentration camp. His father died in January, three months before all the camps were liberated by the United States. Elie, however, managed to stay alive. Three days after his liberation, he got sick with food poisoning, and once he was well, his reflection in the mirror was of a troubled ghost, empty and dead.

I would recommend this book for anyone who would like to know what actually took place during the Holocaust. It is a very powerful book, even though it is small. I would not recommend anyone who cannot handle inhumane treatment to read this book, as it is very upsetting in the way that the people were treated by the Nazi’s.
