This book was made of four stories The Gift, The Great Mountains, The Promise, and The Leader of the People. In The Gift, the boy, Jody, received a pony that he named Gabilan. He took very good care of the pony and he began to train it. One day, he was left out in the rain and became sick. Jody spent the night in the barn with him one night when he was getting worse and when he woke up the barn door was open and Gabilan was gone. He went outside and found Gabilan’s tracks and followed them. They lead to Gabilan, who is lying on the ground with a buzzard on his head and its obvious that the pony had died. In the beginning of The Great Mountains, Jody was bored and was thinking about the mountains. Then, an old man, Gitano, told Jody that he had come home. Jody had no idea who he was so he ran to tell his mother. Jody’s father came outside and Gitano explained that he was born here and he wanted to spend the last years of his life here, but Jody’s father said that he couldn’t, but that he could spend the night in their bunkhouse for one night. Jody was excited to have him there he took Gitano to the barn to show him the very old horse, Ester, which was the first horse Jody’s father had bought. The next morning, Gitano and Ester were nowhere to be found and everyone thinks that Gitano and Ester went into the mountains to die together. In The Promise, Jody’s father and the ranch handler, Billy Buck, told Jody that they promised him a horse, so Jody will have to raise a colt himself because one of their horses, Nellie was going to have a colt. Jody took good care of Nellie, but he was impatient waiting for he to give birth. When she is finally in labor, something goes wrong, and Billy Buck has to kill her and take the colt out of her stomach because he said he promised Jody a colt. In The Leader of the People, Jody’s grandfather came to their house to visit, and Jody’s father was not looking forward to it. Jody’s grandfather talks about indians most of the time he was there, and the next morning he asked Jody for some lemonade and Jody’s mother thought about how much Jody had matured. I thought that this book was good, but I was not expecting it to be so sad.
