George Balanchine was born in 104 in Russia. At age nine he began training at the imperial School in St-Petersburg but the school closed in 117 due to the Russian Revolution. Balanchine finally graduated in 11 and then he joined the Soviet State Ballet (also known as the Kirov Ballet). In 1 he was invited to the United States by young wealthy American named Lincoln Kirstein. In 14, with the help of Kirstein, Balanchine opened the School of American Ballet. The Metropolitan Opera Co. made the SAB its ballet company but Balanchine's previous troubles with management came back to haunt him. In Russia, Balanchine had tried to start his own ballet company but was unsuccessful due to the problems with the board at the Maryinsky Theater who thought that he did not respect tradition. Balanchine also created the Ballet Caravan and traveled to South America but had to disband it due to WWII.
It was in this period that Balanchine choreographed his first American ballet Serenade. It was danced to the music of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings. Seeing as it was originally choreographed for his students, the ballet is quite simple relying mostly on arm movements. There a few male parts in that ballet because Balanchine did not have many male students at the time.
Balanchine's style has been described as a reaction to the Romantic anti-classicism that was the more popular style of dance in the European and Russian ballet when he first started out to dance. It could be called neo-classicism. Balanchine liked to put the emphasis on the dancing in his choreographies as opposed to the plot of the ballet.
Throughout his tenure as the Artistic Director for the New York City ballet Balanchine choreographed in total 175 ballets since the beginning of the company. He liked to think of himself as craftsman not a creator. His favourite similes were a cook or a cabinet maker, two skills he was quite good at. He also had a habit of marrying his protgs for whom he created ballets and made stars out of. He was married a total of five times.
