Because drinking alcohol beverages makes some people more outgoing, alcohol may seem as a stimulant. In fact, alcohol is a depressant, which slows down the central nervous system. Some people have a genetic or biological tendency toward alcoholism. It has been said that a child of an alcoholic has four times the risk of becoming alcoholic than does a child of non-alcoholic parents. Stress may also be a factor of why people drink alcohol. The causes of alcoholism can lead to nothing but negative effects.

The many effects alcohol can cause are all negative. There is not one thing that alcohol can do good for someone's body. During pregnancy, it is not known how much alcohol it takes to cause alcohol-related birth defects, so it is best not to drink any at all.

When drinking alcohol, it doesn't take long to impair someone's ability to drive. Certain driving skills, such as steering a car and responding to changes in traffic, can be impaired by blood alcohol concentrations as low as .0 percent. The more alcohol someone drinks, the more impaired that person's driving skills will be impaired. In most states, the legal limit for people who drive after drinking is .08 percent to .1 percent. Although these are high, impairment of driving skills begin at much lower levels. So, it is not recommended that someone drives their vehicle after consuming alcohol.

There can also be long term problems associated with consuming alcohol. These problems often develop gradually over time and can include liver disease, heart disease, certain cancers and effect the pancreas. Long-term heavy drinking increases the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and some kinds of stokes. It also increases the risk of developing certain cancers.

For others, the disease is progressive, beginning with acceptable social drinking. Studies show that people whose parents were alcoholics are four times more likely to be alcoholics than other people(Causes of Alcoholism). Social factors such as an unhappy home life, a need to control anxiety, problems with relationships, low self-esteem, and stress also play a large part. These are considered "triggers" that lead to drinking alcohol.

Alcohol produces both physical and psychological addiction. Social pressures, especially during college years, encourage people to drink more than usual. Most people learn to control alcohol intake, while other continue to abuse alcohol to the point of alcoholism.. Alcohol is something a person drinks to help relieve stress and any other factors having a negative effect on a person.

Alcohol is a substance that a person does not want to drink. Once a person drinks alcohol, this person may have a hard time staying away from it. Frida Kahlo was a very talented artist which painted mainly self-portraits of herself. Many people have defined Fridas mania for self-portraits as a sort of therapy to survive (bus accident, abortions, surgery operations and weird medical treatments of her age). She painted herself because she was often alone. In these paintings, she painted herself performing different tasks which people thought were very disturbing. She lived from July 6, 107 to July 1, 154 and she was originally from Mexico. Her life was to be a long series of physical traumas, and the first of these came early in her childhood. At the age of six, she was stricken with polio which left her with a limp. During her childhood, she was a fearless tomboy, which made Frida her fathers favorite. He had advanced ideas about her education, and in 1 she entered the Preparatoria (National Preparatory School), the most prestigious educational institution in Mexico, which had only just begun to admit girls.

It was there that she met her husband-to-be, Diego Rivera, who had recently returned home from France. He had been paid to paint a mural there. Kahlo was attracted to him, and not knowing how to deal with the emotions she felt, she expressed them by teasing him and by trying to spark the jealousy of the painters wife at that time, Lupe Marin.

In 15, Kahlo suffered a serious accident which changed her life forever. She was traveling in a bus which collided with a tramcar, and suffered serious injuries to her right leg and pelvis. After getting in the accident, Frida was unable to have children. This took a while for Frida to comprehend. It also meant that she faced a life-long battle against pain. In 16, during her recovery, she painted her first self-portrait, the beginning of a long chain in which she expressed the emotional stages and reactions of the events going on in her life. In 18, she met Rivera again through her friendship she had with the photographer Tina Modotti. Riveras marriage had just collapsed, and the two found that they had much in common. They married each other in August 1.

Riveras artistic reputation was expanding very fast in the U.S. In 10, the couple left for San Francisco. Then, they briefly returned to Mexico. They went to New York in 11 for the Rivera gallery organized by the Museum of Modern Art. In 1, Rivera was paid to paint a major series of murals for the Detroit Museum, and during that time Kahlo suffered a miscarriage. While recovering, she painted Miscarriage in Detroit, the first of her truly deep and emotional self-portraits. The style she painted was completely different from her husbands. Her paintings were not influenced by one person but they were based on Mexican folk art and in particular on the pictures that showed or symbolized a wish or desire.Do my essay on Frida Khalo CHEAP !

Frida had many famous works that were recognized. A few were The Two Fridas, The Little Deer, Roots, and Self Portrait with Monkey. Frida opened new doors to the art world. She was one of the first people to paint such disturbing pictures. She painted self-portraits which depicted her as something else. Other painters use the same style of painting to show how they are feeling at that moment. As you look at Frida's paintings, you see she uses white, red,

Kahlo pretended not to consider her work important. From Detroit they went once again to New York, where Rivera had been paid to paint a mural in the Rockefeller Center. The work broke out into an enormous scandal when the supervisor ordered the half-completed work destroyed because of the political imagery Rivera insisted on including. But Rivera stayed in the United States, which he loved and Kahlo now hated. When they returned to Mexico in 15, Rivera had an affair with Kahlos younger sister Cristina. This incident was a turning point in their relationship. Kahlo had a series of affairs with both men and women which were to continue for the rest of her life. One who would gladly have had a love affair with Kahlo but for the fact that she was not attracted to him, was the leading figure of the Surrealist Group, AndrBreton. Breton arrived in 18 and was enchanted with Mexico, which he found to be a naturally surrealist country, and with Kahlos painting.

In January 140, she was a participant with Rivera in the International Exhibition of Surrealism held in Mexico City. Later, she denied being a true Surrealist.

Her health grew worse from about 144 onwards, and Kahlo underwent the first of many operations on her spine and her crippled foot. In early 150, her body reached a crisis, and she had to go into hospital in Mexico City, where she remained for a year.

After her remarriage to Rivera, her artistic reputation continued to grow. She was included in prestigious group shows in the Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She took up teaching at the new experimental art school 'La Esmeralda', and proved an inspiration to her students.

While the 140s had seen her produce some of her finest work, her paintings now became more clumsy and chaotic, thanks to the joint effects of pain, drugs and drink.

In 15, Kahlo had her right leg amputated below the knee. Soon afterwards, she died in her sleep, apparently as the result of an embolism, though there was a suspicion among those close to her that she had found a way to commit suicide.

When I look at Khalo's paintings, I see a life being told through art. I see majestic use of colors and shadows to get the symbolism behind each one of her paintings across to the viewer. I observe the wonderful use of colors she uses, like the red, white, and blue in all her paintings.

The Dutchman is a captivating motion picture that deals with the 160's scrutiny of racism as well as sexuality. A young black man named Clay(Al Freeman, Jr.) is sitting in a subway car minding his own business when he momentarilly looks out of his window. To his surprise he sees a stunning young woman, Lula (Shirley Knight), who returns his glance. She enters the lone subway car and instead of sitting in any one of the numerous empty seats, she sits right alongside Clay. There is just Lula and Clay in the car.

Before you know it the director (Anthony Harvey II) breaks barriers of the 160's. The viewers of the 60'a must have felt so uncomfortable at the thought of a black man and a white woman, especially a beautiful white woman, being in a sexual relationship together. Sparks fly as Lula and Clay flirt outrageously. The odd part of the matter is that it seems as if Lula is deliberately teasing Clay. For instance, Clay and Lula's lips would become so adjacent to each other and then Lula would withdraw. Lula in addition seems to have a psychotic sense of mind when she goes wild to get an orange out of her bag. As the movie progresses more and more people begin to fill the once vacant subway car.

Overall the film is an excellent portrayal of what people of the sixties might have thought of racism and sexuality. The film is in black and white and that adds a sense of tension that might come over the viewer watching it. The film is just under an hour long. The ending has a very peculiar twist to it and should keep you thinking for quite some time.

The post-modern movement can be described as a revolutionary time as prior modernist traditions were questioned and dramatically changed. Life as modernists saw it changed in many major global ways. This vast change in lifestyle began what eventually became the diverse cultural condition that was post modernity. These widespread life changes influenced the trend of visual culture as expression and variety was once again reflected in the arts. Visual culture began to ignore modernist trends and started to include the idea of individual expression. Trends starting with supermannerism, supergraphics, new-wave typography through to retro and vernacular design were the main advances of visual culture during the post-modern time. This immense variety of style was widely explored and continued to grow, develop and challenge the norm therefore earning the phrase 'anything goes'.

Modern culture had to give way for a new form of expression and way of life. Global issues such as international communications, immigration and the rise of minority groups such as feminists caused the beginning of the end of the era known as modernism. Political and social viewpoints were questioned as prejudice and bias traditions were challenged and a new way of thinking seemed to be encouraged. Thus the term post-modernism was widely accepted as an expression of cultural change. The visual culture of this era also challenged modern style as it broke free from the clean cut, sterile trend. The phrase 'anything goes' may have arose from the 'Me Generation' as the spirit of the 160's was one of personal involvement and the self absorbed directions of social activism. Post-modern design reflected this personal involvement by using intuition and chose to place more importance on the right 'feel' rather than rational communication.

When discussing the post-modern one must look at its predecessor modernism. Modernist visual culture was based on the removal of fancy, unnecessary decoration, and therefore all visual culture was stripped to the bare essential and focused on the basic elements of shape and colour. This trend thus created a clean cut, sterile feel to architecture, furniture and the graphic arts. Postmodernism put life back into visual culture by the exploration of pushing the boundaries of preconceived ideas. This enabled individuality and created an array of diverse arts. Meggs discusses that during the modern era, graphic arts were thoroughly refined by design schools such as the bauhaus. The elimination of historical reference and decoration, and the vernacular that were strict rules to modernist artists were completely ignored by those that are now called post-modern designers as they once again called upon the very resources that were so deleted to modernists. (p 4)

Post-modern graphic art was abundant and diverse however not necessarily brand new. Designers of this time called on their knowledge of previous works dating from all eras and incorporated what they saw fit. By pushing the boundaries and testing the limits of already existing styles these visual artists neglected the tight trend of modern art and by doing so created a new style of visual culture that was so vastly different than that of the modern one. These post- modern artists and designers had no restrictions to what they could produce and therefore by being daring, such styles as supergraphics and supermannerism were explored and admired. The first recorded breaks in modern design were supermannerism and supergraphics. Meggs describes how supermannerism arose with the embrace of the pop-art notion of changing context and scale and the adding of the diagonal line to the horizontal and vertical structures of modern architecture. The international style of the machine aesthetic and simple geometric forms were replaced by architecture of inclusion. (p. 4) Soon after in the late 160s graphic design was applied to large architectural structures, this became known Supergraphcis. Giant letter forms, pictographs and bold brightly coloured geometric shapes , were wrapped around corners and flowed across ceiling and onto floors expanding and contracting space. Such typographical structures were used as a decorational tool instead of literary one. The work of Robert Venturi and Barbara Stauffacher Solomon are two examples of the supergraphic application to graphic arts.

Typography did not only evolve in scale but in order as well through the idea of new-wave typography. New-wave typography suggests a freedom and exploration with text. By questioning the absolute order and cleanness of type Wolfgang Weingart believed the international style had become so refined that it had reached an 'anemic' phase. He soon rejected the right angle and worked intuitively with a willingness to explore the untried, therefore causing ideology and rules to collapsed against his energetic approach. Weingart listed Bunny type, for the people type, sunshine type, ant type, five minute type and typewriter type as a identity for the typographic design he created. Another designer who experimented widely with typography was Dan Friedman, he explored that idea of legibility and readability. As Meggs explains, Friendman strove to accomplish work that was both functional and aesthetically unconventional. He would often explore spatial intervals between letters, lines and words and would finish with random solutions that still held a structure (p. 4) Friedmans graphic designs were inspiration for emerging post-modern trends as he explored areas such as, formal structure against spontaneous expressive forms, texture, surface and spatial layering and contrast between organic and geometric shapes. He also rejected the term postmodernism and replaced it with radical modernism, he saw this time as a reaffirmation of the ideology of modernism however altered accommodate the ever changing cultural and social condition.

This new post-modern trend followed internationally as designers in Switzerland saw their ideas explored in America. April Greiman's work explored the evolution of space and overlapping of forms, diagonal lines and the use of perspective or reverse perspective, floating forms that cast shadows which cause objects to move back and forth form the surface of a printed page. Weingart observed. "April Greiman took ideas developed at Basel (Switzerland) in a new direction, particularly in her use of colour and photography. All things are possible in America!" (Meggs p.4) She also worked with dot patterns or ruled lines to contrast with flat shapes of colour and like designers before her she too worked with the intuitive. Her work held itself together by its ability to draw the eye in and quickly pass its attention across the page. Willi Kunz also experimented with the use of mixed weight of typography, contrasting sizes of photography, the diagonal type structure and the dot pattern. His work was described by Pint magazine as a "quintessential example of post-modern design." (Meggs p. 441) This style spoke of the arrival of the new typographic arrangement that was seen in many post-modern works.

As new-wave typography became widespread many designers previously working with the international style began to explore the emerging design attitudes eagerly. Preconceived trends were reintroduced then ignored such as the grid, overall space was defined as a field of tension and once again intuition and play were experimented within the design process.

The Memphis and San Francisco schools explored texture, pattern, surface, colour and playful geometry. As the cultural condition went through a wild, immense change and diversity so did the graphic arts. Meggs provides a viewpoint of the influences of the cultural condition by using the example of the flowering of the psychedelic poster. (p. 44) Such posters proved that enormous potential of exploration of innovative forms and exuberant colour existed. The fast emergence of design in San Francisco design schools ensured the reputation of being a major design centre. By the 180s graphic designers produced work which consisted of textures and decorative geometric elements.

Following soon after, designers went back to history greatly and created a movement based on historical revival, retro. This uninhibited eclectic interest flowered from modernist European design. The words retroactive and retrogarde implies 'backward-looking' and 'contrary to the usual' The vernacular design term related itself to retro as it too takes characteristics from a historical period this being based on unskilled commercial illustrations and printing, commonplace graphic arts.

Post-modern graphic design was driven mostly by liberation the freedom of expression and intuition and the personal. It revolted against the powerful modern trend which was so dominate in the early twentieth century. Designers felt free to explore vernacular and historical forms in a positive way and incorporated this attitude in their works. A movement of inclusion rather than exclusion and the expansion of possibilities enabled designers to experiment in a unique individual and even eccentric direction. Through trends such as supergraphics, new-wave typography and even, great advances in the field of graphic design occurred. No longer were those in visual culture restricted and bound by rules. Much like the cultural condition that caused the end of modern times and started postmodernism, visual culture responded to the harshness of modern traditions. Some describe the post-modern cultural condition as 'anything goes' , visual culture, in particular the graphic arts, also somewhat followed that subtext, as so many diverse applications as stated above, were achieved, tried and tested and indeed accepted in the post-modern era.

She sat alone waiting for her life, dreaming of a new beginning. She sat in a dark, bare, completely unpatterned room. Alone, by herself not even a mouse to have a friendly, up-to-date conversation with. On the floor lay a frayed, antique rug. Red in its glory days but now a murky grey, dull colour; very unattractive. No great qualities to offer, no kind soft remarks to make. Around her as she sat and dreamed of a new sun-filled future were white dust sheets covering a simply delightful writing desk, which looked quite an important worker in its day. The rich looking, ivory cream sofas had been hidden from sight. No one knew why. Why had all the endearing furniture had been banished for all longing, loving eyes to behold?

The girl sat on the rug, the useless rug, wearing nothing but a dull, white, lifeless night-dress. Having awoken from a dreamy - a dream in which she could not remember being in - she sat in this one room. This room which once would have held glorious balls. Wonderful balls with flamboyant, sparkly dresses. The room where memories lie hidden, beneath dust sheets. Why? She often sat in this room. It made her feel old and superior as if she ruled all. Actually it made her feel below everyone, everything, below people, below furniture. They had memories, yes, under the years of dying dust, but still memories. She was old and had done nothing. Achieved nothing.

Suddenly a howl of wind cascaded into the house through the boarded French windows. The crimson and ochre leaves pouring in with force. They wanted somewhere to make their home. This room would have to do. The now full of life dust sheets rose from the chairs as if gravity had decided upon a new angle. The room was suddenly full of colour. Full of everything she had ever dreamed of. The room was calm; suddenly death had been lifted from this room, from earth itself. Inner calm and confidence took over. She had dreamed enough for it to take over. To re-invent life, so as to re-invent herself. To give her hope in her life. All this excitement to fulfil her teenage dreams so long ago, and to create memories; memories of which she longed. Memories which she would achieve tonight. She looked around in awe. What a fantastic room in its time; it was always in their time, their time and her time was now.

The moon gleamed in through the now clear, crisp glass, bouncing off the cleanliness of the room. She paraded around the room. Full of passion, it was now her time. She grabbed the coat stand and proceeded to dance around the room. Caring about nothing except her. She was stunning. She danced for hours her sparkles gleaming, reflecting off the ceiling and walls under glorious candlelight.Cheap custom writing service can write essays on write in any way you wish on the subject of dreams

Then as suddenly as it had appeared her new, re-invented life was gone. It disintegrated; it disappeared from view between her fingers like grains of sand through a sieve. What a life she had had, what an adventure she had discovered, what memories she had finally accomplished. She had a life again. She had lived.

My essay is about stupid people. I feel that people these days do not know who they really are. Most white teenagers think that they are black for some odd reason. I dont understand why there is such stupid hip hop influence on the world these days. It is really starting to piss me off. What pisses me off the most is the use of the word nigga. Everytime I hear anybody use this world I feel like hitting them in their stupid mouths so they will shut up. For the most part though I cant stand it when white people use this sensless word. I mean seriously didnt we fight a war over the damn word and discrimination against these people. I just cant believe people lost their lives so they could just call eachother this. None of this makes any sense and it really pisses me off that people are using this ignorant word as a sign of being cool. There is not much that i can do about it but one of our presidents was murdered because he didnt want to keep the balcks as slaves. In the past though people like Martin Luther King Jr. have died do to the fact that they didnt believe in discrimination against blacks yet people these days dont take that in consideration and just through all of his work in the trash using one of the most discriminating words within their hip hop lives which is nigga. You know I guess all that I have to say now is that I hope someone out there will help me fight the use of this stupid and ignorant word by when you see someone in the hall using this word you no longer sit there and let it go but say something and express your feelings about how you feel. Fight it poeple, you must it is your only choice.

The first article that I reviewed was Toolpack Consulting (guide), which discusses organizational culture. They give examples of cultural change at several different companies but the main focus was on the cultural change at Chrysler Corporation. The article describes the problems that Chrysler was facing and walks you through the stages of the implementation of cultural change. The stages dealt with quality issues to the pitfalls of cultural change. The article discussed the use of cross-functional teams and the employee problem solving teams. They talked about the cultural changes of un-freezing, change, and re-freezing. They devoted a great deal of the article to the un-freezing stage in order to create change. While diversity usually applies to race and or gender Chrysler used diversity in it's teams by mixing engineers with mechanics, assembly line workers, and extended their communication to include auto dealers. The diversity gave them a clear picture and provided the feedback that they needed to un-freeze and change. A quote from the article "The power of cultural change is strong; strong enough to turn a dinosaur into a state of the art profit maker" was a strong declaration of how important company culture is to the success of all companies.

Although I am a company of one and this article talks about huge corporations and the changes that they made it made me think about the changes that we make at all levels and how they apply to all levels of business. I reflected on one of the issues that they raised about the complacency that tends to set in when the changes are starting to reap the profits and we think we can quit and sit back. I think this applies to a company of one also.

The second article that I chose also was from a consulting firm; Organized Change Consultancy, Re-engineering and TQM , The Balanced Scorecard and Performance Improvement, Assessing and Improving Your Organization, The Nine Pitfalls of Organizational Change Chaudron,D Phd. Dr. Chaudron uses a thought-provoking quote that is reflective of organizational change and the future of our corporate culture. " The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be." Valery,P., French poet and philosopher. He continues to talk about the fact that planning is less about future decisions and more about the impact and consequences of today's decisions. In creating change the article stresses the need to flatten the company and involve the employees with information and authority. Companies must be specific in their training approach and empower teams to manage themselves with the direction of a coach. He list one of the pitfalls of change is many companies that think there is a quick fix solution without the total commitment of the entire organization. He feels goals need to have the resources and management determination to see their success. Goals also need to be SMART Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound. Goals focus on what and strategies focus on how. Dr. Chaudron also includes methods to treat inter-group issues, cross-functional teams and matrix organizations to deal with issues that cut across organizational lines. Increasing the future of change he contends is not a one shot effort but a continuous and on-going effort.

I feel this article also held information and a blueprint that can be applied to all organizations. I also think he highlighted and warned of using the wrong method for your corporation. He stressed knowing the problem and using the right solution to fix it. Not to change just for the sake of change.

The third article I chose was a little more individual as it dealt with character, Managers'Lack of Character Must be Fixed Groten, E. I chose this article because it didn't deal with all the big issues of organizational culture but dealt with the issue of culture from the ground up. Eric Groten starts her article by stating managers must learn to treat people better and that it requires buy-in from the top and the creation of a management-coach position. She goes on to site several examples of managers lack of character and lack of respect for their co-workers. It is the choices that we make as individuals. Lack of character can affect the culture of an organization.

I chose the above articles because I enjoyed reading them and that they applied to the text that we are studying; also they gave me insight into ways that I could use to improve my own business and the people I work with on a daily basis. The main focus on not quiting after a few successes, setting goals, time frames, and working with people of character and continuing to improve my own character.

Introduction

-------------

Children today are much more exposed to technology. Kids learn math & history, play games, chat with friends and even download encyclopedia from the world-wide-web. Almost all activities they indulged in, can all be supported by technologies. Thanks to great researchers who contributed time, effort and knowledge in constructing and designing effective system for young target audience. Technology advancement has changed the way children live and learn.

Dealing with children is not an easy task. Kids especially very young ones have difficulty verbalizing their thoughts. It adds challenges to designers in creating an effective, usable, purposed-served system. However, methodologies and framework for understanding the various roles of children can have in the design process, and how these roles can impact technologies are created.Cheap Custom Essays on HCI FOR KIDS

Designer have to always bear in mind that young people are not just short adults but an entirely different user population with their own culture, norms, and complexities (Berman, 177). Their own set of thinking, psychological reaction patterns and intellectual abilities differs from adults. It is common for designer to speak to parents and teacher asking what their kids or student wants instead of asking the kids directly. Adults may think that their kids need something but to a kid, that is not a need. There are advantages to solicit information from children because they can be extremely honest in feedbacks concerning technology.

With the emergence of children as an important new consumer group of technology (Heller, 18), it is critical to support children in ways that are useful, effective, and meaningful for their needs. Allison Druin believe that understanding the role children play in technology design process would lead to the answer. The better designers recognize user, the better the design of such system to serve needs.

This research paper analyzes methodologies in working with children & investigates similarity and difference between children and adults. By understanding this framework in regards to the child's role, it is easier to development practices that can have lasting effects for the future. Usability tools are use to examine HCI for kids.

Methodology in working with children

------------------------------------

Methodologies has been developed to observes and understand users. Individual differences, age & intellectual capabilities should be taken into account during the design. Designer and researchers came out with successful techniques to tackle problem in developing HCI for kids. Context below explain practical techniques that has been carried out in countries like Europe and United States.

Based upon reviews of literature and some exploratory studies done by Druin, there are different ways to collect data from children.

1) Contextual Inquiry techniques (CI)

) Technology Immersion (TI)

) Participatory Design techniques (PD)

Contextual inquiry technique (Bey er & Holtzblatt, 17; Holtzblatt & Jones, 1; Holtzblatt & Jones, 15; Holtzblatt & Beyer, 17) calls for researchers to collect data through observation. Children below 5 year-old have difficulties expressing themselves & verbalizing their thoughts. Therefore, designers of kid's system decided to carry out a series of observation in order to understand and capture kid's activities.

Participants would be 1 child, 1 interactor and note takers. Interactor usually initiate discussion and asked questions such as " what is this?, why do u like that? ". Interactor never took notes because child may feel uncomfortable and it is very distracting. It makes child feels like school. Interactor should act as a friend instead of steering the entire observation. Both interactor and note takers should dress in casual, informal clothes to keep away the "authority impression". Video is never used because research shows that kids tend to pretend & perform, not being themselves when confronted with camera. Note takers divide their job into categories, one will be taking down child's action (what the kid does) and the other will note down child's speech (what the kid says).

Results that were captured in quick notes will be converted into diagrams task & bubble diagrams. After a digestion period of one day to a maximum of one week, research team regrouped to chart or diagrams the experience. Later, spreadsheet or cell-based diagram in which the information is broken up into six columns Time, Quotes, Activities, Activity Pattern, Roles, and Design Ideas (Druin, et al., 17) is created.

Second methodology to be used with children is technology immersion (Boltman, et al., 18; Druin, et al., 16), an extension of CI. Druin quoted that observation on children's activities alone is not sufficient because many times children have minimal contact with technology in their homes or public area. Therefore it is recommended and wise to place children in a technology-rich environment during the observation period.

Here in a observation centre, child is provided with a technology-rich environment where they will become the decision makers. A room filled with all sort of printers, digital cameras, Macs, PCs, software(s) games and Internet access allow children to explore which is their liking or dislike. Technology Immersion is a combination of technology, time, and freedom of choice that offers researchers more opportunity to understand what children do and want with technology. The example of an on going TI experience is at CHIkids. This club supports up to 100 kids range from age -1 year-old. Children will have chance to explore technologies provided. Adults and teenagers participated and join some of their activities to act as a "facilitators", they approach children to work with them.

Participatory design technique (Bjerknes, Ehn, & Kyng, 187; Muller, 11; Muller, Wildman, & White, 14), stresses on creating opportunity to incorporate kids ideas into their design. Kids are given chance to work with researchers in developing low-tech prototype using paper, glue, string, crayon and etc. Working together with them allows designers to hear kids' idea & being able to produce what children wants in the future. Both children & adult work as design partners. At the same time, children who are not well -skilled in the development process can be inspired and empowered by their collaboration with adults to generate new ideas.

Simple guidelines for designing Children's HCI

-----------------------------------------------

A Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget shows that children are lack of knowledge and experienced. Kids see the world in a dissimilar point of view which adults have doubts on what they are thinking. He divided children development into a series of stages

Sensory-motor (birth to year-old) dependent on senses.

· Software for children this young is difficult to design. Less interaction expected from babies. Input channel should be easy. Child cannot read, will need presence of an adults.

Pre-operational (-7 year-old)

· Memory can only store one thing at a time. Sequential actions confused child.

Concrete operational (7-11 year-old)

· Kids have gone to school. Knowledge and experienced gain could help in building technology. Most suitable age to work with researcher and help designer in developing prototype.

Formal operational (11 yr old and above)

· Children after this age is hard to teach because their mindset is has been molded by parents, teacher and friends.

Context below indicates CSF of a system.

-----------------------------------------

Ø Usability of System

In order to achieve Maximum performance & effective interaction, there are needs for researcher to identify their target user. In this case, working with children age 7-10 is an ideal, and treating kids as design partners allow designer to uncover the critical success factor of a successful system.

Ø Keep operation single step. Do not merge task.

Children may easily get confused with sequential operation. They tend to loose interest in a task very quickly. There is no "pause" for kids. Children usually stop playing with a system and continue when they feels like it. Avoid multi -treading task, children have short term memories.

Ø Use different sound & sight effects as feedback.

Children are sensitive towards responses; unexpected sound and action will catch kid's attention. It encourages kids to stay longer with the system, prevent them from getting bored.

Ø Use appropriate font size, color and layout.

Kids tend to collect memory easily with the presence of color. Researcher believes that the younger the target audience, the larger the font size should be. Layout of the system should be simple, complicated design does not appeal to kids because they may not find familiarity (past knowledge to support them) like adults do.

Ø Do not use metaphor that is used by common system.

HCI for kids requires different set of metaphor. Children do not have as much experienced as adults do. Lack-age of experience in outside world does not make them understand representative icons. Example, a kid may not know what is a picture of diskette has to do with this game.

Ø Avoid complicated input channels

Kids cannot use "drag & drop" function effectively. Their small hand has problems holding the mouse tightly to drag figures. Point-and-click will be more efficient.

Ø Perform user testing

Always carried out user testing stage before launching the system. Get target users to play with the system and comment on experiences. Comment and feedback shall be stated down. Consider revising and do final construction to enhance the system.

THE DISCOVERY OF "LUCY"

November 0th, 174 was an evening of findings probably depicted in archaeologists' dreams. At the camp named Hadar in the Ethiopian Desert, Donald Johnson's discovery of a prehistoric woman was unearthed. This woman, Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis), died from unknown causes over three and a half million years ago. My Biology text, Biology of Animals, argues that Lucy is dated back to only . million years ago. Twenty-seven years later, Lucy's fossilized skeleton is still the most complete and best-preserved skeleton of any discovery of ancient civilization.

The digging of Lucy's bones, forty percent of which were found, gave way to her possible range of age, weight, and height. Lucy's existence on this planet spanned between twenty-five to thirty years. By today's standards, she would have probably been classified as a midget, at only three and a half feet tall. Researchers determined that Lucy weighed about fifty-five pounds.

The organization of her bones revealed that people of that era were bipedal animals, walking in an upright position. Unlike humans, apes used their arms and hands to aid in movement. Walking erect allowed freedom of their limbs for other duties. The intellect of Lucy and her people was limited, mainly due to their brain size of about a small grapefruit.

The discovery of Lucy is significant to not only history's viewpoints, but also the research done in other fields like, Biology. Lucy's findings have hopefully opened the door for more archeological breakthroughs. Time will only tell when or if there are any older or more complete skeletons waiting to be unearthed.

When the Constitution of the United States was first written, our country desperately needed something new. Under the previous form of government, the Articles of Confederation, the central government was a weak one and the states had too much power as compared to the federal government, we needed something more effective.

It was purposed to have a new form of government with strong central power that will be able to enforce laws made by a strong governing power with three branches the executive (the president), judicial (Supreme Court), and legislative (Congress).

Under the Articles of Confederation there was no way to enforce unity between states. This led to competition between states for land and commerce. States made up laws that contradicted laws of another state, they had different currency, and on top of all that for the whole country to go to war every state had to vote to go to war. Under this form of government the states would be unified and make up one country.

To prevent a monarch from developing the people vote on who becomes president in elections, which take place every four years. This is far different from a monarchy for several reasons; we vote for the leader, the leader doesn't have supreme power and terms last only four years.

No person in this system of government is above the law and all the people can be impeached. The president doesn't have all powers for laws, the Congress votes on bills as well. This is where the system of checks and balances came into effect.

Checks and Balances is a system in which each branch of the government monitors the others, thereby preventing the misuse of any powers given to a specific group of the government. For example, if congress passes the president can veto or object the law. However, the congress can override the president's veto with two thirds of the House of Representatives voting to override the veto. The Supreme Court then decides the meaning of a law and determines if that law goes against the Constitution, if it does they can declare it unconstitutional and stop the passing of the law.

The unique characteristics of the American people make it perfect for a democracy. The form of an extended republican government described by the U.S. Constitution will offer the best protection for the individual rights of citizens while having the power to work towards the common good.

Federalism is obviously the only way a nation like the United States of America could prosper. Under this union a strong central government controls the nation, but each state remains independent and has its own organized government. Also, central government's powers will remain under control, but they will also have enough power to maintain peace and regulate commerce. The three-body government allows for a checks and balance system, which will maintain the power of each body and not allow any body to misuse its power. This is an almost ideal form of government.

There are little to no flaws in our government, because each section of government can check each other. This government is like none other of the known world. It is a Democratic-Republic and it will build our nation into a powerhouse. The government is in the hands of the people of the country and that will save it from corruption. In conclusion we feel that the key to success in our country is the Constitution and the three branch system of government.

About Max Dupain Born in 11, died 1. Dupain established his first studio in 14 in Sydney. In 141 he entered a partnership with the photo engraving firm of Hartland and Hyde. Dupain went to war, then photographed Australia for the Department of Information, so next time you are at an old info booth and look at a flyer, it could be Dupains photo of lake Eyre or Luna park.

Salvador Dali, the ever surprising, ever changing artist, whose work can be looked at, like his life, to develop with time. Dali started off painting Impressionist work, employing impressionist techniques taught to him by his fathers close friend, and celebrated impressionist painter Ramon Pichot. Dali had no boundaries, he had a genius mind. Anything and everything could be his art form.

The man is baked in white hot light, he is pinned to the sand. The photo is a perfect representation of composition, the right amount of sand and sky, and a beautifully centered subject matter, the sunbaker. It is easy to see how this picture, taken in 17, is said to capture Australian identity. Max was interested taking shots of everyday happenings, yet his photos always seem to have a deeper meaning than when if they were seen in life, on a day to day basis.

This painting shows the lively shimmering brushwork that indicates Dali's obsession with impressionism. Dali smears the oil paint on thick in short repetitive strokes, which creates texture. The short yellow scattered strokes amongst the blue water gives the illusion of light reflecting, something like night lights or sunrise. The Painting fades off into the top half, blurring browns with grays, greens and blues. This gives the picture lots more depth, and brings the subject matter (The thick yacht) in focus a lot more.

Should Israel be Muslim or Jewish?

Should Israel be Muslim or Jewish?

That's a very interesting question, however I am unable to make this decision because I believe that neither of these two religions give those people the hope for the future that is found in the bible.

I feel the question that is more relevant is "How can a person (not a nation) know which religion is right?" The best way to do this is to consider seriously the following questions about religion.

1) On what are its teachings based? Are they from god or are they largely from men? The Bible says at Timothy 16, 17- All scriptures are inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.

For Example the bible does not teach that the human soul is immortal, to the contrary the Bible says at Ecclesiastes 5 "For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten".

) Consider whether it is making known the name of God.

Jesus said in prayer to god "I made your name manifest to the men you gave me out of the world"(John 176) Also Jesus declared "It is Jehovah your god you must worship and to him alone you must render sacred service"(Matt 410). Has your religion taught you that 'it is Jehovah you must worship'? Have you come to know the Person identified by that name-his purposes, his activities, his qualities-so that you can confidently draw close to him?

) Is it largely ritualistic or is it a way of life?

God strongly disapproves of religion that is merely formalism. (Isa. 115-17) True religion upholds the Bible's standard of morality and clean speech instead of weakly going along with popular trends. (1 Cor. 5-1; Eph. 5-5) Its members reflect the fruits of God's spirit in their lives. So, those who adhere to true worship can be identified because they sincerely endeavor to apply Bible standards in their lives not only at their places of meeting but in their family life, at their secular work, in school, and in recreation.

4) Do its members truly love one another?

Jesus said "By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you truly have love among yourselves." (John 15) Such love reaches across racial, social, and national boundaries drawing people together in genuine brotherhood. So strong is this love that it sets them apart as being truly different. When the nations go to war, who have enough love for their Christian brothers in other lands that they refuse to take up arms and kill them? That is what early Christians of the first Century did and is what true Christians continue to do today.

So in answer to the question, "Should Israel be Muslim or Jewish", I believe each person has the right to choose their own religion, because after all their everlasting future depends on it. The Bible is a precious gift from God. It is like a letter from a loving father to his children. It tells us the truth about God - who he is and what he stands for. It explains how to cope with problems and how to find true happiness. The Bible alone tells us what we must do to please God. Psalm 11-; Isaiah 4817, 18.

Humanity: Good vs Evil

How do you view humanity?

So you want to stir up a good debate eh? -- Toss out the question, Are human beings essentially good or bad? Consequently you will receive a wide variety of opinions to support either position (plus anecdotal evidence that comes with each view). An optimistic humanist will assert that people are essentially good. A cynical post-modernist will say that people act good at times, but it's because they're out to get something for themselves. Their goodness is essentially utilitarian, like when your neighbor unexpectedly becomes real friendly to you because he needs to borrow your rider mower.

Humans are no less baffling or mysterious than God Himself. Once King David was considering God, and he raised the question What is man? This is a question worthy of our consideration. And, I find (among churches) one that is not often studied from a biblical viewpoint.

G.K. Chesterton gave this answer to the question. Man is not a balloon going up into the sky [that is, man is not all spirit as some mystics claim], nor a mole burrowing in the earth [simply a complex earth-animal produced by evolutionary forces]; but rather a thing like a tree, whose roots are fed from the earth, while its highest branches rise almost to the stars.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Humanity: Good vs Evil

Just consider the fact, as C.S. Lewis pointed out, that humans are amphibiansonly half spirit and half animal . . . As spirits they belong to the eternal world, but as animals they inhabit time. This strangeness about human beings appears in David's psalm.

Psalm 84-8 What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man [the word for man in his mortality and weakness] that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings [better to translate it, God for Elohim] and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

Although the aforementioned psalm praises humans as just "a little less than heavenly beings," the Bible also clearly teaches that human beings are fallen creatures, and we will come to that in a moment. But, originally before the fall, God created human beings to share in His goodness. After every stage of His creative work God declared His work good. We see this throughout Genesis one. Finally, after God made human beings He looks back over all He did and declared His work, very good. (V. 1, God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. ) Not merely good, but very good. God created the first humans to reflect His qualities of integrity, goodness and righteous innocence.

However, there was the possibility of the entrance of evil into creation, so God provided the humans with a signpost warning them about choosing evil over good. This signpost was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God created humans with freedom in moral choices.

Now on to what I think

I believe in the importance of cooperation (as long been argued by anarchists). Except for those that believe in and call for complete self-sustainability, voluntary cooperation has been seen as the only way to replace the State; or rather, that the State has replaced the 'natural law' of voluntary cooperation.

Peter Kropotkin, in Mutual Aid, makes perhaps the most compelling account of this 'natural law' as he details cooperation, not competition as the basis of successful evolution. This idea of cooperation through voluntary associations has long since been expanded upon and rehashed. Emma Goldman writes, In…Mutual Aid, Kropotkin shows that in the animal kingdom, as well as in human society, co-operation…[not] strife and struggle-has worked for the survival and evolution of the species….only mutual aid and voluntary co-operation-not the omnipotent, all-devastating State-can create the basis for a free individual and associational life.

I believe that capitalism, and its emphasis on competition and greed, is wrong. I believe that capitalism as an economic system not only promotes, but thrives on, economic inequality. In many ways the present capitalist economic system stresses the opposite of human values it demands that people take a me-first attitude, competing fiercely to achieve their own individual security…at the expense of others.

To sum up in fewer (simpler) words

Every human being, from the psycho killers to the Mother Theresa's of our time (and past), are indefinitely, undeniably good at heart. A basic rule of intellect is that all people are born goodand remain so. Attitudes however can and will change. This is because attitudes are created in a person through their life's experiences. If you were to clone a masked murder and place the product in a suburbanite family, with a suburbanite life, he would turn out differently than his 'parent' or original.

Ninety-nine percent of the human race has (if not respect) compassion for their fellow man. Most people choose evil in a moments notice without thinking of the consequences. On the other hand, good actions require more thought and reason; especially if the good action is not self-beneficial. Therefore, my theory is that evil is only (science- a reaction to a stimulus) a synthesized sensation institutionalized by man as a way to excuse his own ignorance [stupidity]. Good is something far greater than the depths of science could analyze; it is a furor that takes root, not in the mind, but in the soul [heart]. And no matter what your intelligence, keeping in the soul and not in the mind is the only way goodness can remain true.

In the future I plan to be a nurse. My major right now is nursing. I want to become a nurse because I care about people. I don't like to see people in pain. My plan so far is to attend college and do the best I can to get into the nursing program. I have been told by many people that becoming a nurse isn't easy, but they haven't scared me away from pursuing my dream. In order for me to get in I have to have at least a B average or I will be turned down. I promise myself that I would do it and I will because I don't make empty promises. I believe that I can do it because I have many people in my family who are nurses if they can become a nurse then I have no doubt in my mind that I can also.

Once I am in the nursing program, I will try to do my best. After I complete college I will attend a nursing school. In the end I hope that I will become a registered nurse hopefully, I will get a job in a hospital or a nursing home. I haven't decided to do nursing for the money, so I will take a job anywhere that needs me, no matter what the pay is just as long as I can make a difference. Once I am settled in my job, I plan to continue my education. There are always advances in medicine so it's important that I am aware of it. If I have a lot of education and skill, then I'll always be able to get a job. My mother tells me that the farther I go in getting an education, the better my chances are for success and comfortable living.

I have been interested in medicine for as long as I can remember. I would watch all the television programs that have to do with medicine. The shows that I would watch were about things such as major surgery, birth, and emergency situations like a shooting or car accident. I always wondered what it would feel like to save a person's life. I wondered what it feels like to be those doctors and nurses. So when I become a nurse, I will finally know what it feels like. I first thought about becoming a nurse when I was watching a movie about a woman with cancer. I wanted so very much to help ease her pain. I watched how the doctor and the nurses looked after her and I knew that I could do the same.

Once I have been a nurse for a good long time, I am going to start my own business that will take care of individuals that aren't very fortunate. I plan to work on under privileged people; I have heard many stories of people not being treated because they do not have the means to pay. I don't believe that because someone doesn't have enough money, they don't deserve a chance to be healthy the same way as a person with money. I have seen programs about children that are very sick and they just need a little caring to get better, but their parents don't have much money so they can't afford to go to the doctor. I once watched a show about a woman who died when she only needed a special injection to keep her alive, but she couldn't because there wasn't any money left for her to receive the drug she needed. When I am a nurse I intend to work on people even if they don't have the money for medical attention.

My life plans are very important to me; it's has basically given me a reason for being here on earth. My purpose will be to give people caring and understanding. The lives of people will be in my hands and I hope that I will help make them live a long and healthy life. I will be very happy when I have succeeded in doing all I have planned. If I only end up being a nurse that is still an accomplishment in its own.

Artists have always been inspired by myths and legends, and have the exceptional ability to transform them into visual form. Sometimes the art is the only surviving record that shows that a culture or civilization actually existed. Joseph Campbell considers artists mythmakers because they translate the true hidden meaning of the work into something that is believable and meaningful. He states that with the help of metaphors, a piece of art or literature can be elevated from a mythical experience to a cosmological status(Lord 4), which will then result in a feeling that will transcend time and transport us to bliss(Conf ). Campbell feels that you will never capture the full effect of the work of art, with simply a comprehensive explanation or brief summary of it. Metaphors have the power to transform and tie events to their real inner meaning. They take the ordinary interpretation of the story to the mythical sphere (inner area) where the real adventure takes place. A Metaphors main function is to bring these two realms together, and also help express the inexpressible. They give you that wow feeling, especially when you have finally seen the beauty the artist was trying to convey all along (Lord ,4)

The 16th century bronze sculpture of the dancing Ganesha is such a piece of art. It is now housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ganesha is one of the most popular Hindu deities, representing good luck, wisdom and fortune. Bronze sculptures originating from southern India were designed to be carried in a procession. This way the people could admire and view each deity one at a time. The sculptures were also created for one to experience what is known as darshanseeing the divine image, and for it to see you. The unknown artist created this sculpture made out of bronze, a copper alloy, and a no longer used wax technique where the object is made in wax first, then covered with clay. The object is then baked, which melts the wax away, and the clay then hardens and forms a mold. The mold is filled with melted bronze, cooled, and then taken off. The artist then creates the beautiful masterpiece by complimenting the details of the image (ArtsEdNet). The expressive sculpture shows the dancing Ganeshas gleeful personality, and gracefulness. The artist created a massive, and agile sculpture, which I imagine, was difficult to do. He successfully portrayed the important qualities of this deity in a way that made the special characteristics endure through time.

This piece of art was made in the Southwestern Indian State of Karnataka. The Ganesha is normally depicted with the body of a man, four arms, the head of an elephant, and having only one tusk-- the other tusk looks broken. Another unique feature of the deity, is its large belly, which practically hangs over his lower garments. On his chest he has a sacred thread that looks like a snake (ArtsEdNet). There are several different versions behind the myth of the Dancing Ganesha. The most popular one being, that Ganesha was created by the Goddess Parvati as a guardian to her privacy. The Goddess Parvati was upset that her husband never respected her privacy, especially the times when he would barge into her private chambers while she was bathing. To solve this problem, she decided to make a figure of a young boy out of sandalwood paste that was on her body, gave it life, and told the boy she was his mother, and to guard the entrance while she bathed. Her husband, Shiva (lord of destruction), came as usual to visit his wife, but found that the boy was blocking his way, and would not let him in. Shiva did not know this was his son, and fought with the boy. The boys head was cut off from his body, and when Parvati came back from her bath, she was so enraged at the sight before her, that she threatened to destroy the heavens and the earth. Her husband (Shiva) tried to calm her down, and told his followers to bring the head of the first creature they discovered. The first creature they found was an elephant. They cut off the head and put it on the boys body, and gave the boy life. The Goddess Parvati was once again happy (Bhartiyakala.com).

All of the physical attributes of the Ganesha have a great deal of symbology behind them. The Ganeshas four hands hold all his attributes and signify their divinity. His lower right hand, which is used as a weapon and his bowl of sweets, symbolize abundance. In his upper left hand he holds a bunch of mangoes, which represent fertility, and in his right hand he holds an ax, which destroys ignorance and any obstacles that come in his way. In this sculpture, the Ganesha is dancing on a lotus flower, which is a symbol of the universe and the pure heart of the devotee (ArtsEdNet). His round belly signifies that he swallows the misfortunes and heartaches of the universe, while at the same time protecting the world (Bhartiyakala.com) The Ganeshas dancing is symbolic of his playfulness and his childlike personality. These are all symbolic of good fortune.

People worship Ganesha before taking on a challenging task or project they need luck on such as writing a book, taking a journey, or building a house (ArtsEdNet).

Thorean starts of by saying that he believes the State will take his work of his hands, making him no better than anyone. The Constitution, though not perfect, is respectable. Many have interpret them, but he, seen from a higher perspective, states that who shall judge them and say what they are?

The government doesn't bother him much. He believes that if a man is free in thought, fancy, and imagination, than anyone who is less wise cannot bother him.

Everyone has different thoughts. States-men and legislatures speak of a moving society, but cannot do without it. They have certain experience and discrimination, but their wit and usefulness are limited, and believe that the world is governed by policy and expediency. Speculations will soon reveal the limits of Webster's minds range and hospitality. He is wisdom, and he contains only sensible and valuable words. But his quality is prudence. Its not truth, but consistency or a consistent expediency. He is not a leader, but a follower. He cannot fact out of its political relations. The States have nothing to do with it.

They who know of no purer sources of truth wisely stands. They use the Bible and the Constitution.Custom writing service can write essays on Civil Disobedience

There is no one who has spoke out. There is no genius to answer these questions of the Legislatures. If it was up to them, America would not retain her rank among the nations. 1800 years have passed, yet not Legislature who is wise enough has step amongst us.

The authority of the government is still impure. It can have no pure right over his person and property. There will never be a free State until it recognizes man as higher independent power and treats him that way. But this is left up to his imagination. It is his vision, a vision that has not yet happened.

Literary Analysis The Chrysanthemums

In The Chrysanthemums, Steinbeck accurately portrays what it was like to be a female in the 10s. He shows how isolated someone, especially women, could be. Many things in the story are obvious to the reader, however many events have underlying symbolism and depth. These events have to be read into and understood by the reader in order to get the full effect of Steinbeck's symbolism and parallelism between Elisa and the 10s.

Elisa is a middle-aged married woman, who lives on her husband's, Henry, ranch. She is a very simple woman who takes great pleasure in caring for her flowers. Henry is often away at work and Elisa is left alone, which is why her flowers mean so much to her.

Custom Essays on Literray Analysis of John Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums

Throughout several parts of the story, Steinbeck shows us the emotional and social effects on Elisa and her life. The first instance of symbolism is how Elisa tends to her garden. She nurtures her flowers and babies them, by doing this it shows that she is needed. If she did not care for her flowers in the way she does, they would not grow. This makes her feel important because her flowers are beautiful and grow to be strong. Elisa cares for them just like they were her own children. She is able to watch them change and grow and this is one thing she has control over (448).

A hobby that women often took part in and enjoyed during this time was gardening. Since women of this time period were thought of as being the passive sex and did not have a large role in society, Elisa tried to hide her feminism. She tries to hide these traits by wearing masculine looking clothing while she is in the garden. "Her figure looked blocked and heavy in her gardening costume, a man's black hat pulled low over her eyes, clodhopper shoes, a figured print dress almost completely covered by a big corduroy apron with four big pockets to hold the snips, the towel and scratcher, the seeds and the knife she worked with. She wore heavy leather gloves to protect her hands while she worked" (448). In this scene, Steinbeck describes how Elisa tries to disguises the woman in her, by covering up her womanly body with a manly get-up and her soft hands by wearing gloves in the garden.

While Elisa was working in the garden, she saw a man go by. On the side of his wagon it read "Pots, Pans, Knives, Sisors, Lown mores. Fixed." As the wagon turned down the drive, Elisa was very apprehensive about talking to the man. He asked if she had anything he could fix and she declined. He noticed her flowers and began to comment on them. She thought he sounded interested in her chrysanthemums and she let her guard down. As they were talking the man brought up the topic of a lady down the way that had wanted chrysanthemums in her garden. Elisa decided to give him a pot with the stalks in it and he would deliver it to her. She went into great detail as to how to care for them. "Everything goes right down into your fingertips. You watch your fingers work. They do it themselves. You can feel how it is." She also prides herself on the fact that she has "gardners' hands" which was something her mother had. She decides to find some pots for him to fix so he could eat that night. He fixes her pots and then heads off down the road to deliver the flowers. After the man left, Elisa realized the man had conned her into thinking he really cared by talking about her flowers. She was disappointed for not sticking to her word and letting herself become so open to a stranger.

Elisa then goes inside to get ready for dinner in town. As she showers, she "scrubbed herself with a little stone of pumice, legs and thighs, loins and chest and arms, until her skin was scratched and red" (45). This description illustrates how Elisa was trying to wash away her feminine flaws of opening up and giving in. When her husband arrives, he comments on how beautiful she looks, only this was not what she wanted to hear. She had just scrubbed away her womanly beauty and she did not want to be thought of as beautiful (45).

On their way to dinner, Elisa notices a speck ahead on the side of the road. As they passed she realized it was her chrysanthemums that the man had thrown off the wagon. She then knew that the man did not care for her offering or the effort she put into it, but only the money he received (45).

At the end of the story, Elisa breaks down and begins to cry. "She turned up her collar so he could not see that she was crying weakly-like an old woman" (454). This leads us to believe that Elisa is afraid to show emotion to her husband because this might make him think less of her and she wants to be treated equal. By showing this emotion, it makes her feel like she will never escape the title that society has put on her, merely for being a woman.

By leading us through the events in Elisa's life, it gives the reader a chance to see what it was like to be a woman in this time and how many differences there were between men and women. Even though Elisa enjoys some womanly things, she also wants to be able to have the same opportunities as a man. Steinbeck shows us that Elisa no longer wants to be so emotional and passive, therefore stereotyping her as a weak woman. She wanted to be accepted for how she was. During The Chrysanthemums, Steinbeck explored how different events had emotional effects on Elisa, and how this affected the way she reacted socially.
