Although the book, A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway was not the type of book that had an exciting page-turning story, it can nevertheless be called a classic. A classic has been defined as "a book that lasts through generations because of its universality of theme, ageless symbolism, word choice and the ordering of detail." This book has a universal theme, several ageless symbols, and a classic style that is as easily read today as

it was 50 years ago.

Although there were several themes in this book, a major theme seemed to

dominate the story. This theme is the importance of love and loss in a malefemale relationship. These two lovers were so absorbed in each other that they needed no one else in their life. "'Wouldn't you like to go on a trip somewhere by yourself, darling, and be with men and ski?' 'No. Why should I?' 'I should think sometimes you would want to see other people besides me.' 'Do you want to see other people?' 'No.' 'Neither do I.'" p.7. This conversation shows that Catherine loves him so much that she is willingBuy cheap a farewell to arms term paper

to be alone just so he can be happy. At the same time, Mr. Henry would probably like to go skiing but would never dream of leaving Catherine alone. Death wins out over love. "'It is very dangerous.' The nurse went into the room and shut the door. I sat outside in the hall. Everything was gone inside of me. I did not think. I could no think. I knew she was going to die and I prayed that she would not. Don't let her die. Oh, God, please don't let her die. I'll do anything for you if you won't let her die..." p.0. Hemingway

went on for an entire paragraph of him pleading with God. This is how he is able to show that Mr. Henry loves her more than anything, more than life its self. In a way, I think that they loved each other too much. They did not go out often or do anything that was with other people. They were always together. This is an unhealthy life style. They were creating their own fortress and isolating themselves from the world. '"My life used to be

full of everything,' I said. 'Now if you aren't with me I haven't a thing in the world.'" p. 57. This quote further supports the idea that they are isolating themselves from the world. Since they were so cut off from the outside world, Mr. Henry has even a more difficult time going back into the reality of life after her death. This theme of man and woman isolated in love and finally their loss to dark death is universal.

The most profound aspect of this book would be its ageless symbolism. The free-living, heavy-drinking life that Catherine and Mr. Henery shared could be compared to the heavy investing, speculating and consequence-free life of the 0's. The product that came from Catherine and Mr. Henry's lifestyle was a dead child. The result of the over- investing of the 0's was the great depression. So the baby symbolizes the depression. Another point to consider was that Mr. Henry was a deserter. He left the army to be with Catherine. Desertion was illegal and he paid for it by loosing that which he loved the most, Catherine. Rain was connected with pain or grief. He drank to dull

this grief or pain. Rain is wet and "wet" is connected with alcohol. "We had each been drinking out of one of the bottles and I took my bottle with me and went over and lay flat on the hay and looked out the narrow window at the wet country." p.17. In this scene, he has been thinking of Cat and he decided that it would be best to drink his troubles away. When Hemingway said that the land was "wet", it usually meant that Mr. Henry was drunk. After Catherine and the baby died at the hospital, Mr. Henry walked home in the rain. "After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the

rain." page . He had just suffered a major loss and dealt with it in the only way that he knew; through alcohol. Although drinking at this point was not actually mentioned directly, we can nevertheless assume that he was going to make this connection just because of the setting in the rain. This book had many examples of symbolism and they all point to the fact that there is always a terrible price to pay for weak actions or for blind love.

The word choice and ordering of detail of this book also leads one to believe that they are reading a classic. Hemingway's style is one of simple, straightforward dialogue with the absence of slang. Many generations of readers can read and understand the story. An example of this simplicity of dialogue is as follows "'Where do you want to go, Cat?' 'Montreux.' 'It is a very nice place,' the official said. 'I think you will like that place.' 'Here at Locarno is a very nice place,' another official said." page 8. Although this simple dialogue is very easy to read, it is also very powerful in it's directness and simplicity. On the other hand, his use of language when describing scenery is very elaborate. "The next year there were many victories. The mountain that was beyond the valley and the hillside where the chestnut forest grew was captured and there were victories beyond the plain on the plateau to the south and we crossed the river in August and lived in a house in Gorizia that had a fountain and many thick shady trees in a walled garden and a wisteria vine purple on the side of the house." page 5. When

describing these scenes, not only does he do it in an elaborate and detailed way, but he also runs his thoughts and sentences together as if it were all being spoken in one long drawn-out breath. The ordering of detail of this book was in a straight-forward, well-organized way. It was very linear and the story did not jump around between the present and flash-backs to the protagonist's past. This kept the story from becoming confusing. Hemingway's style is that of a classic author.

Because of the universal themes, ageless symbolism, and style of word choice and story detail, A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway can indeed be considered a classic literary work. The theme of love between a man and woman so self-absorbed that all else is ignored and the theme of life bringing them to a breaking point is a human story that all can sympathize with. The ageless symbolism that compares the loss of a baby, or hope, with the beginning of the American economic depression is profound. The alcoholism in the story reflects the careless attitudes toward life by the people living at this time. The irresponsible attitudes, such as the decision to desert the army, only leads

to heartache. Life is nothing but a game to these characters, until the reality finally smacks them in the face. Hemingway's simple and straight-forward dialogue and story line makes this an easy to read and understandable ageless story.

My Parents are getting a Divorce

Sadness, confusion, helplessness.

My parents are getting a divorce.

Screaming, crying and slamming of doors. That is what I heard all of the time.Cheap custom writing service can write essays on My Parents are getting a Divorce

Growing up, I listened to many arguments. Some about money, others about parenting. I thought parents' fighting and arguing was normal.

Either on their way, or already are, most of my friends parents are divorcing. I really did not think that it would affect me the day I found out my parents had settled on divorcing.

Over the next couple of months, I thought the fighting would diminish because their marriage would finally end. In my mind, a divorce meant that they would be communicating very little, if any, from this point on. But was I wrong!

It only became worse. The arguing escalated, and they started to blame one another for every little thing.

I can remember when my father became angry with my mother one night. It was Christmas Eve, and I was sleeping in my bed. I was suddenly awakened by blatant noises.

I looked out my door and saw my mother crying. My father was screaming, "Why did you buy another pair of shoes? She has so many shoes." My mom just yelled back with tears running down her hurt face, " It's just a pair of shoes." My mom had bought a pair of shoes for my sister for Christmas. On the outside, I saw my mother sobbing over shoes. But I knew on the inside it was much more than that.

I can remember the smallest things starting the fighting. I still do not understand the big deal that my father made about a pair of shoes. It seemed that every penny had to be rightfully spent and accounted for.

It was always issues concerning money or parenting.

I always thought that divorce was a sort of normal thing to go through. I think this more and more these days do to my friends' families and what I see poured out on TV.

It has been about a year since their divorce, and the fighting comes and goes. I will never understand all the reasons they split up.

Although they are now divorced, they have been spending more and more time together. I think it is because my brother and sister have moved out of town and my parents are lonely.

I secretly hope that one day when I will arrive home and experience them sitting on the sofa, like they were when they told us about the divorce. Only this time, it would be good news. They are getting back together!

The audience enjoys watching reality television because there are no actual roles to be played or particular lines to be said; people are simply expressing how they truly feel. In both Middle Passage and "The Frill" one prominent similarity is the perceived difference in social status and intelligence. Many different vantage points fuel the way people speculate about other cultures. In "The Frill", the author (Pearl S. Buck) shows how Mrs. Lowe believes herself to be of higher social standing than the Chinese tailor she hires. Also, she constantly reminds the tailor that he is not well educated by speaking down to him. We see similar themes in the novel Middle Passage. The Caucasian men judge themselves to be better and smarter than the Allmuseri they capture. They show this by consistently demeaning them and ordering the slaves around. In both stories, we see how bad the lower class groups have it. In "The Frill", we recognize that the tailor really has a dreary and meaningless life. In Middle Passage, the audience is struck with the struggles of an African slave aboard the Republic.

To begin with, Mrs. Lowe regards herself to be a better person than the tailor she hire. She shows her thoughts several times throughout the story. The first sign we see is that she is wealthy. She has a manservant that waits on her hand and foot. When the tailor arrives, the first words out of Mrs. Lowe's mouth are orders for the tailor not to put a collar on the dress. Instead, she would prefer a frill because she is a larger type of woman. "No wantchee that collar tailor! I have talkee you wantchee frill- see, so fashion" (Buck, 17). Secondly, she insults the tailor by calling him a liar. "No, you talkee lie, tailor. I know how I talkee. I never say I wantchee flat collar- never" (Buck, 17). Mrs. Lowe also demands the dress to be done in a very short time period or else she will not pay the tailor. "I want it tomorrow replied the white woman in a loud hard voice, suppose you no bring, then I no pay- savee?" (Buck, 18). Furthermore, Mrs. Lowe shows her insensitivity when the tailor asks for a dollar or two because he needs money to buy a coffin for his deceased brother. Mrs. Lowe replies by telling him that he will get his money when he finishes the dress. She then proceeds to demean him to Ms. Newman by saying that he will gamble, or use the money for opium. The last incident where she shows she is superior is when the tailor finishes the dress, and Mrs. Lowe gets angered at the price. She complains that it is too much even when she knows another tailor would charge more.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on middle passage

Moreover, Mrs. Lowe repeatedly talks down to the tailor in the story. The first instance of this is when she refers to him as boy. "Boy, talkee tailor come this side." (Buck, 16) In addition, she demonstrates how she wants the frill to look like as if the tailor was never educated in that area. Another time that Mrs. Lowe speaks down to the tailor is when he uses more cloth than she expected. "Yes, never mind you but you have spoil so much my cloth. What you think, I buy this cloth no money. Plenty money you make me lose." (Buck, 17) Furthermore, Mrs. Lowe says it in a tone that implies that the tailor does not know what he doing. When the tailor asks Mrs. Lowe for money, she ignores him like he was a homeless man on the street rummaging for pennies. After Mrs. Lowe receives the dress she considers that she got the best of him because the dress should have been more money.

The Chinese tailor that Mrs. Lowe hires has a very unfortunate life. He had three children, which all passed away. He then took care of his cousin and called him his son. He was always struggling for money. Moreover, he asked Mrs. Lowe to make her more dresses so he could afford a coffin. He worked day and night on the dress to have it finished by the next day. In addition, it was the hottest day of the year. He worked almost naked because he was so hot. His wife lay helpless as he went to work on the frill. After all of his hard work and fine stitching he didn't even get recognition from Mrs. Lowe when he delivered it.

In Charles Johnson's Middle Passage, racism and prejudice is an eminent theme. We even see prejudice among the same race. Papa gives Rutherford Calhoun an ultimatum to marry Isadora to relieve himself of his debts. When Calhoun interrupted Papa in mid sentence, he became very angered and constantly reminded him that he owns him. Calhoun said he would marry her to get out of there and delay the inevitable. Calhoun goes to a bar that night and meets a man named Josiah Squibb who tells him about a cargo ship that is leaving the next morning. When Calhoun gets on the ship, he is greeted with a pistol at his head held by Peter Cringle, a first mate. The fact of the matter is that if Calhoun were white he probably would not have been asked to show his papers. When Calhoun meets Ebenezer Falcon, it is almost as if he makes Rutherford his slave. He wants Calhoun to give him reports on how the Allmuseri are doing. When the Allmuseri came aboard ship, right off the bat, racism comes up. An African woman throws her baby overboard, then two slaves try to escape, then Ebenezer Falcon beats them until they bleed. Many of the slaves aboard the Republic tried to rebel, but failed. "The best way to control a rebellious nigger," said he "Is to give him some responsibility. (Johnson, 74) Throughout the entire trip the crewmen used various experlatives that were demeaning to Africans. At first, the slaves saw Calhoun as an enemy until they got to know him. "His people saw whites as raw barbarians and me as a cooked one." (Johnson, 75) Falcon assigned Calhoun to oversee the Allmuseri, because he thought the white folk were too good for that job. We also see prejudice and racism when the Allmuseri are all packed into tight quarters when the crew has elaborate sleeping beds. The slaves were brought up to the deck frequently to do exercises so none of them would be stiff or become ill. The captain gets three course meals with all kinds of food while the slaves get the scraps of the leftovers. The only time when the slaves got a halfway decent meal was when they were inspected. Captain Falcon wanted them to look huskier because he said they would sell for more money. As the story goes on the Allmusri take over the ship. Even after all the racism directed at the slaves they let Rutherford plead for the other crewmembers' lives. They decide to keep the men alive. Calhoun's big argument is that they will need them because the slaves can't read English maps. "Kill Falcon if you want, but if you kill his helmsman, you'll never reach land. Never, none of you can read English maps." (Johnson, 14).

In conclusion, the most conspicuous theme in both stories is social status and intelligence. We see the progression of how Mrs. Lowe constantly demeans and pokes fun at the Chinese tailor, and the racism aboard the Republic between the crewmen and the Allmuseri.

Giovanni Bernardone was born around September 118 to Giovanna (Pica) and Pietro di Bernardone. When little Giovanni was born, his father, a very successful cloth merchant, was on a business trip to Champagne, France, to buy fine French cloth. In his absence, his mother had him baptized him John. When his father arrived home, he was outraged to find his son named John, and had it changed to Francesco, or Frenchman.

When Francis was about 10, his wealthy parents sent him to Saint Georges, a school near the city walls of Assisi. The school belonged to the Church of Saint George, and was taught by canons. It was here young Francis

heard the story of Saint George and the dragon. Then, Franciss heart was set on becoming a Knight. What young boy can resist the story of a brave knight fighting evil dragons in order to save the beautiful princess?

Francis turned 14, and then his wild parties began. He and his other young friends would eat and drink themselves sick, at Franciss treat of course. After that, all through the night the large party would dance through the town, Francis leading them and singing his heart out the whole way. Didn't it disturb the townspeople? Yes, but when they saw it was Francis, everyone would smile and shake their heads. No could not love this charming boy with his looks, generosity, and splendid voice.Order Custom Essay on The Youth of Francis

Of course, all this merry-making cost money. And who was the ever-ready provider? Why, Pietro Bernardone, of course. He and his family were very wealthy, and he kept his boys pockets well lined. He also made sure Francis wore nothing but the best. He being a clothier, his son wore nothing but the finest fabrics in the newest styles. But still, he would sometimes cringe at the way Francis ridiculously spent money. Or when he gave it away. Francis was very generous, and would give to every beggar. When he had no more, he would give the fine clothes off his back.

This pleased his mother, but when would the spending stop?

As Francis became older, the dream of knighthood never left him. In January 100 war broke out with Perugia.

For two years, this was nothing more than skirmishes, a game of cat and mouse between the two cities. It wasnt until December 1, 10, that a true battle was fought. The armies of Assisi were assembled. And where was our young knight? With the knights and nobility. He had been splendidly outfitted by his father, who was anxious to see him with the nobles.

With the army, he charged into the fighting plain, along the banks of the Tiber. It was a fruitless massacre. Perugia's armies slaughtered Assisi's men. Only knights were taken prisoner, because owning a horse meant one could pay a ransom, horses being a sign of wealth. Assisi's nobles were put into dark Peruvian dungeons, to be left there for years.

Being stuck in a dungeon was not good for Francis, who contracted tuberculosis. He was released early by a charitable organization who cared for sick prisoners. His father paid a ransom, and Francis went home. He was about 1 when he was taken prisoner. He was now .

Francis's Calling

Francis was having troubles at home. After returning defeated, his father was very disappointed. And upset at the money he spent on fine clothes for Francis. When he was recovering from his illness, he was very quiet and spent much time reflecting and praying. He no longer sang. And Assisi was having a hard time recovering from the war.

But after while, things again began to lighten up. Once again, the dream of knighthood was stirred in Francis. It was the time of the Crusades, the Holy Wars. And Francis was drawn to go. This time he would come back victorious. His father spent the equivalent of a large farm fro the armor and horse of Francis. And so Francis went off once again.

While on his way to Spoleto, Francis fell ill, and lodged with his squire in an inn. In the silence of the night, a voice called him. The voice asked Francis what he was going to do. When Francis explained, the voice said "Who can give you more, the master of the servant?"

Answered Francis "The master"

And the voice said "Then why do you abandon the master for the servant and the prince for the vassal?"

Francis asked "What do you wish me to do, Lord?"

"Return to the land you were born in and you will be told what to do."

Francis stayed in Spoleto when he caught a case of quartan auge. When he was well again, he started on the road home. While passing through Foligno he stopped. He could not wear his armor home. What a pathetic sight And knight in unblemished armor. Francis sold his horse and armor and bought himself some simple clothes. He came home, and the arguments with his father began. His father had spent so much money--the sum of a large farm!--and what did Francis have to show for it? Nothing!

One day, after returning home, Francis changed. He suddenly was converted. He gave alms to every beggar. Should he run out of money, he would give the poor his cap, his tunic, his belt. He once discreetly made a gift of his lovely shirt to a poor wretch. He started to wear simple clothes. He was full of love for God. His mother was so proud. This generous Christian boy was hers son. But his father...

One day, while in this spiritual drunkenness, Francis was walking in the countryside. He ventured out as far as San Damiano, a small church, crumbling with age. Inside the church was a large crucifix, beautifully painted with the image of Christ. Francis fell on his knees before the cross. And then, the crucifix spoke. It said "Francis, repair my house".

About this time, Francis made a pilgrimage to Rome. Upon arriving, he immediately went to the Church of Saint Peter. As he stood on the steps of the great church, he noticed all the beggars on the steps, pulling at the clothes and crying in the ears of all who entered. Francis thought "Here in Rome, where so many men are rich, wise, and holy, is there no one who would take acre of these miserable creatures?" And, acting on a moments impulse, he exchanged clothes with a beggar and for the rest of the day begged on the steps of Saint Peter's. This one day of begging helped him understand the poor. And the more he understood, the more he could help.

Soon Francis's father was enraged at the way his son ways acting. He beat him, and locked him up. So finally, Francis, in front of the bishop, took off all his clothes and laid them and his money at the feet of his father, and said "I used to say, 'my father, Peitro di Bernardone', but now I shall only say 'Our Father, who art in heaven' "Bernardone greedily gathered up the clothes without a second look. Francis was no longer his son. And the bishop came and covered the young man with his cloak. Then the bishop gave Francis an old gardener's cloak. Francis had never been happier.

Now, Francis still had to rebuild the church of San Damiano. He danced and sang of the love of God in the streets, asking not for money, but for stones and mortar. And people gave them to him. So, with his own hands, he rebuilt the Church of San Damiano.

Francis cared for the sick and the poor. He was never ashamed to touch anyone, and even kissed the hands of a leper. Soon, others would join Francis in his life of poverty.

Many young men, inspired by Francis, also wished to change their lives. Francis told them to give all they had to the poor. The first two were Bernardo di Quintavalle and Peitro dei Cattani, and they lived with Francis in huts of branches and mud by Portiuncula. Soon, many others joined the group and they moved to a small, rotten shed in a place called Rivo Torto. They led a hard life. Sometimes, there would be nothing to eat and the could would freeze them. Later they went to Rome for the Pope's blessing. At first he declined, but a vision was shown to him in a dream. Francis was saving the church.

The Works of Saint Francis

Saint Francis, leader of the Friars Minor, was known for his love of the poor and destitute. There are many accounts of works he has done concerning lepers, poor, sick, and old. Near the convent where Saint Francis lived was a hospital for leprosy and other ailments, where many of the Brothers worked. As it was, in this hospital was a leper who was impatient, rude, and blasphemed God and The Virgin Mary, to the extent it disturbed the brethren. They presented the case to Saint Francis, who visited the leper. Upon entering, he said "May God give you peace, my beloved brother!" to which the leper replied, "What peace can I look for from God, who has taken from me every blessing and made me this disgusting object?" Francis answered, "My son, be patient; the infirmities of the body are given by God in this world for salvation in the next. There is great merit in them when patiently endured." Said the foul creature "How can I patiently bear the pain that afflicts me night and d!

ay? For not only am I afflicted by my infirmity, but the friars the hast sent to care for me do serve to make it only worse, for they do not serve me as they ought." St. Francis then said, "My son, I myself will serve thee, seeing as thou art not satisfied with the others." Came the answer, "What can thou do more than they have done?" "Whatever thou wishest I shall do for thee" "I want then, that you wash me all over; for I am so disgusting that I cannot bear myself." Said the leper. Francis heated some water, and then adding odiferous herbs, undressed him and began to wash him with his own hands, and then by some miracle, when the holy hands of Francis touched the body, the leprosy disappeared, the flesh was healed! And as the body of the leper healed, so did his soul. Seeing his leprosy vanish, the man felt great repentance for his sins, and began to weep bitterly. Feeling himself so healed in body and soul, he cried out "Unhappy me! I am worthy of Hell for the wickedness I!

have done against the brethren, and my blasphemy of the Lord!" He prayed for days, and he soon died at peace with God.

St. Francis has also been known for his love of animals. Many stories are told of Saint Francis with birds, fish, and beasts. One of the best known stories may be that of the Wolf at Gubbio.

There was a time when Saint Francis lived in a town called Gubbio. One day a large and dangerous wolf appeared in the neighborhood, a wolf so large and fierce it had no problem killing a sheep or a man. The people of Gubbio lived in fear of the wolf and would not even venture out of the city walls. Upon hearing of this, Saint Francis opened the gates of the city and began to approach the wolf. At seeing saint Francis the wolf lunged at the man, but quickly made the sign of the cross and called out "Come hither, Brother wolf; I command thee not to harm me." And as meekly as a lamb the wolf lay down at Francis's feet. "Brother wolf" began Francis, "Brother wolf, thou hast done much evil in this land destroying and killing the creatures of God without permission, yea, not only animals, but men, too, created in the likeness of God, for which thou art worthy of being hanged like a murderer. All men cry out against thee; dogs pursue thee ; all the inhabitants of this city are thy!

enemies. But I will make peace between them and thee, O brother wolf, If thou would give me a promise not to offend them any more." The wolf, as best could, made it clear he agreed with everything Saint Francis said. Saint Francis said again "If thou dost make peace, I promise thee the inhabitants of the city will feed thee every day for as long as thou shalt live among them, thou shalt no longer suffer hunger, as hunger has caused all this. But if I obtain such things, you must promise on thy side to never again harm men or sheep or any animal; dost thou promise?" Again, the wolf made signs he consented. Saint Francis then said "Brother wolf, give me a sign of thy pledge." And then the wolf put his paw into Francis's hand. "Come now, before the people and show them you are no longer a threat." So the wolf and Francis went back to the town and again performed this miracle to show all the peace of the wolf, and the people gladly accepted to feed him. So for many days, the wolf!

went meekly from house to house and the people feed him. And when he died after years, the people grieved his death, for his humble presence had always remind them of Saint Francis.

These two examples are nothing but a taste of the works of saint Francis. The saint has done much more, along with the Friars Minor, and would later pray so hard he received visions, and ultimately, the holy stigmata.

About the Diorama The Christmas at Greccio

The Christmas at Greccio, the Living Nativity, was brought about by Saint Francis, in an attempt to make people remember the meaning of Christmas. In front of the Church of Greccio, a real stable was set up and real animals brought to the scene; a real child was placed in the manger. Midnight Mass was said for the people in the little stable. And once again, recreated, the people saw where the Christ Child had been born. Some say this was the inspiration for the crèche, or nativity scene many people now have in their homes at Christmas.

Dark Ground

Stephen Mullins

As the elevator groaned wearily to life, the last remnants of light disappeared as I slowly descended down the mile and half squared tube cut into the side of the mountain. Slowly descending into the endless dark void, with the mine lights glowing like stars in the night sky, I silently said a prayer that I would make this journey safely to the bottom. This dismal journey was one of the few trips I ever made into a coalmine and I will never go back.

I was always told since my childhood that mining coal was a hard and treacherous job that took a special sort of man to do. It didn't take long for me to figure out that I'm not that kind of man. When the rusty, worn out elevator finally stuttered to a stop at the face of the mine was when the reality of being under thousands upon thousands of tons of raw mountain finally hit home. The thought of coal pillars the size of toothpicks compared to the enormous weight of the mountain, as the only thing keeping me from being pulverized into a bloody pancake scared the hell out of me.Order custom research paper on dark cloud

While walking through the long, dark, and damp corridor I looked around the ribs of the coal seams. The ribs were sweating profusely with water as a little stream settled at the base of the seam. As I glanced serenely at the sweating walls I remembered all the tales of miners hitting underground supply of water sending torrents of water and mud spewing through the caverns of the mine. Nothing to me could have been worse than to be washed like a dirty load of clothes in a gigantic washing machine. The deadening roar of lumbering machinery soon brought my mind back to reality and to the fact that this was not a dream.

The machinery at the face of the mine hungrily ate away at anything that dared to oppose its awesome power. Any piece of machinery in the mining operation could easily mane or kill the unsuspecting miner. A continuous miner with its long cylindrical toothed drum has the capability of turning a miner into a compost heap. Many miners have lost arms, even their lives to the deadly roof bolter. Scoops racing around the mine are known to accidentally run over a working miner seriously wounding him. The thought of being electrocuted by one of these machines ran throughout my mind while repairing one of these.

Every piece of equipment in a coalmine runs off of 1700 volts of direct current. The possibility of electrocution weighed heavily on my mind every minute I was repairing a piece of equipment. The nearest power disconnects for any piece of machinery was located back at the elevator shaft. It was all to easy for someone to come along and turn the power back on lighting you up like a roman candle on the fourth of July just as you began to splice into the feeder cable of the piece of equipment. Thousands of miners through out the years met their untimely demise do to electrocution during repair of their equipment.

Even when the miner reached the ripe old age of retirement in the mines his life was cut short by black lung. Black lung is a disease that effectively attacks the lungs of the miner leaving him dependant upon artificial respiration until he dies. This disease has cut short the lives of many members of my family and friends. Nothing is sadder than watching a once strong, proud, and independent person gasping for their breath.

Edith Napier, an Eastern Kentucky poet and author, stated the plight of the coal miner with the poem "Blue Diamond Coal Mines". Blue Diamond you are so blue, We thought you were so true, We loved you with all our might, You robbed our life, Like a thief in the night, They called you Black Gold, So we are told, We loved you in the day, We loved you in the night, As the top came down, They were sorrow all around, Blue Diamond when you closed, The old miners couldn't breathe, We all stilled greaved. In a way this poem symbolizes a lot of the reasons I turned my back on the eastern Kentucky coalmines and, in a sense, my childhood home with all the good and bad memories. Throughout the years spent in childhood, I have seen both grand parents fight and loose battles with black lung disease, all of my uncles become disabled at a young age due to mining accidents, and cousins and friends die tragically in the mines. These are the reasons that I left the only place I truly call home.

LUST BY SUSAN MINOT

LUST is a short, autobiographical, serious fiction, written by Susan Minot. The author talks about her fleeting , lustful relationships which were seemingly interesting in the beginning eventually faded away leaving a feeling of disgust , guilt and vacuum within herself.

The common theme of the story is that of various adventurous sexual encounters of the author with different boys lasting only too shortly. However at the end of the story, excitement in each encounter changes to the feeling of disgrace, disgust and depression.

The main character of the story is the author herself who adopts the first person participant voice. However, readers cannot completely rely on the information given by the author because she does not reveal every aspect of her encounter with the boy. She fails to report her part of involvement in the relationship. The narrator portrays herself as a lascivious but emotional person capable of analyzing the feelings resulting after each breaking relationship. Yet, the author fails to give any kind of specific portray of any of her boy friends'.Buy cheap Lust By susan Minot term paper

The plot is that of inconsistent relationships based solely on the selfish physical desires and pleasures associated with the aftermath of fulfillment of those desires.

The conflict lies in the author's lustful desires Vs the feeling of disgust, emptiness, disgrace and remorse. The author however does not resolve the conflict for the readers.

The author's style of writing is unique. She adopts a discontinuous, unrelated and unconnected method of writing which gives it an effect of excerpts taken from a personal diary. Also, she keeps switching between the first person point of reference and second person point of reference. E.g. "For a long time, I had Philip on the brain. The less they noticed you, the more you got them on brain."(pg.58, 4Th Para.) In this manner she sometimes makes the reader an observer and at other times, a participant.

The mood is variable throughout the story but the conclusion leaves the reader depressed. The setting is variable too throughout but ending in a gloomy.

The pace of the story is fast. Each incidence is short. The paragraphs are many but small containing few sentences.

The story is difficulty to understand because of the discontinuous style of writing. By the end of the story the reader begins to have a feeling of disgust toward the relationships which are built completely on the foundation of lust.
