The Awakening
By Kate Chopin
The Awakening immediately reminded me of a book a read recently called The Great Gatsby. Chopin's informative writing immediately brought me back to Gatsby's huge mansion. Though Mrs. Ponteillier and friends do not seem nearly as wealthy as Gatsby, I see similarities in the way each other set up the book. In the Great Gatsby, a few fairly wealthy individuals live in an isolated area near the bay. The cottages and the people in The Awakening remind me of the beginning in the Great Gatsby.
Chopin's writing style is unique. Though I have not read many women's authors, I have noticed that The Country of the Pointed Firs as well as The Awakening, a lot of detailed commentary and insight into the personalities and surrounding involved in each setting. Chopin writing style is more interesting then Sarah Orne Jewett. Although they are similar, Jewett uses more description while Chopin tells a better story. Writers like Chopin are easier to follow and grab my attention more so then the slow, detailed styles.Custom writing service can write essays on tea
The biggest problem with The Awakening and The Country of the Pointed Firs is the lack of action. Books like Apt Pupil and Great Gatsby have me wanting to read. The Country of the Pointed Firs and The Awakening are too slow and should have a larger, more interesting story line. I have not reached the point in my literary career where I can enjoy a book for how well it is written. These books, are well written, but involve old, sewing club type individuals that are dull. Mrs. Ponteillier represents a simple adult during the early 100s.
A River Runs Through It takes place in small, Mizula Montana in the early 100's, like in The Awakening. Mrs. Ponteillier's character is like that of Mrs. MacLean in the book/movie A River Runs Through It. In the book, Mrs. MacLean is the classic housewife. Her life is monotonous and dull. Everyday Mrs. MacLean sews, cleans, and cooks all day long. She does this while her husband teaches and participates in sermons at the local Protestant church. Her boys work and fish all day long, with an occasional cocktail in between. During this time period women were dull. They were not given a chance to work. All day long the housewife sat at home and attended to her family. Women were content with the idea of being a housewife. Today women are taking business roles in society. They are getting more involved with the outside world then back in the day. Because of their limited role in the time frame of The Awakening, I see very little action taking place in this book. Though it has gotten off to a better start then The Country with the Pointed Firs, I see a similar ending taking place. The dull characters will make for a well-written book, but a very uneventful finish.
