In "A Separate Peace", there were a few references at the beginning of the book that one

would only understand after reading it the whole way through. In the beginning

paragraphs Gene expresses his feelings of the change that the school has gone through

since he was there 15 years ago. He describes the shinier woodwork that has been done. "I didn't entirely like this glossy new surface, because it made the school look like a

museum, and that's exactly what it was to me, and what I did not want it to be." It seems

as though he may be referring to breaking the rules. He saw the school as a museum in

which everything must be kept under some order, but he didn't want it that way. He's

probably thinking back to the summer session where everything was different and rules

were broken. Everyone was more at ease. In another paragraph he describes the fear and

guilt that he had felt and yet with all that he also felt the joy that came from the same

source. "I felt fear's echo, and along with that I felt the unhinged, uncontrollable joy

which had been its accompaniment and opposite face." Gene is referring to his

friendship with Finny, he felt the fear from Finny's accident since it was his best friend

and he was responsible for the fall, and he also felt the joy of having a friend like Finny

to loosen him up and have fun.

As Gene walks through the school he goes back to some places that bring back

painful memories, yet he feels that it is something that he must do. He finds himself at

the First Academy Building. He stands at the foot of the long white marble flight of

stairs. He recognizes and remembers these stairs as being the one that Finny fell down

and in the end being a factor of his death. Gene remembers the night that Finny fell

down these stairs in anger and the stairs symbolize him losing his best friend. The other

painful memory that he had to endure was the sight of the tree by the river. This tree

was the beginning of all of Gene's regrets and sadness. He knows this tree as being the

truth of the biggest mistake that he had ever made at Devon. He could never forget that

day which haunts him when he caused Finny to fall off that tree. He knows that the tree

holds so much importance as to what had happened between him and Finny. He can only

look back and remember these events as they had once happened, taking the good in with

the bad.
