On the second page of the novel, Nick comments that Gatsby "represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn". (). Gatsby believed in this possibility of romance, and even though the possibility was based on shallow material realities, it was motivated by his love of Daisy. It was selfish in a way, but Nick was able to appreciate the romantic aspect of it and therefore, able to see Gatsbys true greatness. As the summer progressed, Nick learned more about who Gatsby really was, or rather who he was not and reasons why he lived his life as he did. Nick did not approve of Gatsbys lifestyle or the way he earned his money. Although Nick came from a very wealthy family himself, he was taught to work hard for his money. However, Nick saw Gatsby as superior to those who surround him. Nick made the distinction between Gatsby, whom he loved because of his dream, and the other characters, which constituted the foul dust that floated in the wake of his dreams". ().
