"No it's much more serious than that. When we took your x-rays the other day there was a slight problem we noticed. Since you smoke you have caused to make holes in your lungs."

Mary Ann was silent and suddenly eager to listen to what he was going to say next.

Dr. Ford continued, "You have two choices, you can either have me do some surgery where I can install a voice box in your throat and you will still only be 100% healthy for 5 years. Or if we don't get rid of the black spots you can stay as you are for about a year and then your lungs will collapse."

Mary Ann had no money. She sat there thinking about what she was going to do. On one end she thought there was no point to live. She had no family, no pets, and never found love or a friendship.
