However, I don¡¦t always agree with these people¡¦s opinion and beliefs at all time, they sometimes challenge my own value and ethics on particular issues as well as validating them for me. Literary pieces such as ¡§6 Degree of Separations¡¨, ¡§Three Passions¡¨, ¡§Shades of Grey¡¨ and ¡§Nine-Year Olds, Meet Monet¡¨ have truly showed me the power of literature because each one has interacted with my values by challenging and validating them. Each one of these pieces provided not only entertainment to one who reads it, but it also teach important lessons for anyone. One of the factors why he wasn¡¦t accepted in the society is because of his sexual preference; hence he tries to pretend to be part of the hierarchy of society. The fact is that gays are often neglected and discriminated against in the society; he therefore strives in every way possible for society¡¦s approval, and sometimes even by means that are intolerable.

I realized that sexuality preference should not affect a person and whether they are good or bad, and this was proved by my sympathy towards Paul growing as the movie progresses and more information was revealed. I actually felt sorry for him; I felt that his isolation and the hostility the society was giving him was the only cause of his action, therefore he doesn¡¦t mean to be bad. I was initially disgusted by Paul¡¦s action when I found out that he was lying, however after the movie discussed his point of the story, I suddenly felt sympathetic for him.

I can¡¦t say that ¡§6 Degree of Separation¡¨ had suddenly changed my mind completely, especially on the topics of sexuality, but I feel that acted as a very good stepping stone towards my acceptance of homosexuals, because it provided me with a lot of background and support where other people¡¦s opinion are also valid. This movie mainly showed me that even homosexuals have their stories. This proved to me that my previous prejudice was not suitable, hence challenging and shaping my beliefs.

At the same time when literature is powerful enough to challenge my beliefs, it also does a magnificent job of validating them. It¡¦s comforting to feel that I am not the only one who thinks a certain way in the world, and that there are others who share the same opinion as me. A piece of literature that proved this was ¡§Three Passions.¡¨ At the time I was reading it, I had a feeling that this particular piece was written just for me. The passions that the author has always sought for are the same ones that I¡¦ve been looking for through out my whole life. I have always been searching for love, knowledge and the true meaning of life.

The paragraph about love especially brought me joy as I read it. ¡§¡K Because it brings ecstasy ¡V ecstasy so great that I would often have scarified all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy.¡¨ (Russell) This is very true in my case since friends are currently one of the most precious things in my life; they bring me endless amounts of happiness and relieve my loneliness just like the author have stated in the piece.

¡§Shades of Grey¡¨ is also another piece of influential writing. When the author says ¡§Shades of grey wherever I go, the more I find out the less that I know. Black and white is how it should be, but shades of grey is all that I see,¡¨ This was something I was feeling through out my whole life. Why are there so many uncertainties and so much depressing events that keep occurring? And no matter wherever I go, I see things that are uncertain; shouldn¡¦t it be easier to justify between what¡¦s right and what¡¦s wrong, instead of seeing everything in the middle, facing bias and unfairness.

I found this poem rather comforting because of the fact that I feel a strong relation between the poem and myself. The author was generally experiencing the same thing that I often experience, confusion in my own identities, conflict with peers and family, or miscommunication between different people as well as the difficulties of distinguishing the differences between what¡¦s right and what¡¦s wrong. It¡¦s because of the relation between the poem and me that made this poem extra meaningful to me. Since I agree with the content of the poem, this proves to me that someone else also feels the same way as me, therefore also validating my beliefs.
