As we enter the 1st century many new issues and problems have to be dealt with, one concerning issue is that of Money and Wealth and how these material things are causing greed and shaping how we act as human beings. This issue can be seen through many texts, namely the book, The Great Gatsby, and the film, Citizen Kane, and it was only after reading and viewing these texts that my eyes were opened to the issue. The issue is also evident in many current affairs today and highlights how money and wealth have today become more important than individual qualities such as kindness and generosity. It is important, especially in todays society, that we take hold of such an issue to prevent ourselves from becoming too materialistic and remembering what really is important, rather than living only to have money and become wealthy.

Upon reading the text, The Great Gatsby, I was able to see how the issue of money and wealth leads to greed and has today become more important that personal qualities which make us who we are. Although many may believe that money and wealth is the key to a happy life many others would have to disagree. In the text, The Great Gatsby, the audience is forced to believe or at least think that to be successful or happy, one must be rich. This idea is conveyed many times throughout the text. One example is the fact that when the main character, Jay Gatsby, firsts meets Daisy he cannot marry to her as he is a poor young solider and she is a wealthy women. Later on in the text when they meet again Jay has become wealthy, and they then consider marriage and take part in an affair, suggesting that only because Jay is now rich is he fit to marry a women such as Daisy. Is this how we want our world to work? Is it fair that we judge people, not by their own personal qualities, but by the degree of their wealth?

Another text that arises concern to the issue of money and wealth is the film, Citizen Kane. This text too suggests that money and wealth leads to greed and certainly influences the way people act as money and wealth are considered more important than personal qualities. This is conveyed as the main character, Citizen Kane, is unable to love or be loved, because his money has made him who he is and has taken from him the ability to look for or even have himself personal qualities which make people who they are. At one point in the film he even says himself, If I hadnt been very rich, I might have been a really great man, suggesting that his money and wealth has denied him from becoming a good person.

Personally, I believe that money and wealth does not entirely lead to greed and a materialistic view, but I do believe they play a large part in triggering and sustaining these alternative qualities and views. A prime example of how money and wealth has triggered greed and a materialistic view is Bill Gates, also known as the Microsoft man, one of the richest people in the world. Instead of playing fair Bill Gates has monopolised the computer software business by stealing other people ideas and incorporating them into his own Microsoft software. By doing this he is not only being greedy, something of which that money and wealth has made him do, but he is denying others of what they deserve through his greed for even more money and wealth.Buy cheap The 21st Century - Has money and wealth taken over? term paper
