Lawrence of Arabia opened with its world premier in 16. The film depicted the life of Thomas Edward Lawrence and his travels and adventures in Arabia. Poe's setting contributes to the total effect of madness and control in this tale. All the shutters in the house in the house were closed "(through fear of robbers)" (107), so no one could see anything outside in or the inside out. This was scary because no one ever knew what went on in that house except the old man and the murderer. The house was old and creaky, and, during the midnight hours, was pitch black. Because of this pitch-blackness the old man could "feel �although he neither saw nor heard-to feel the presence" (107) of the murderer's head.

One would also question if the murder really heard a heart beating. It is a true mystery surrounding the source of the sound that drove the deranged narrator to murder an old man and subsequently to reveal both the crime and his own guilt to the police. The narrator himself believes the sound to have been the heart of his victim beating even after his dismembered body has been concealed beneath the floorboards of his bedchamber. He describes what he heard or believes he heard, both before and after the murder, to have been "a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton"(108). If in fact he heard something other then his own heart, then what was it? Was it his own guilt over killing the old man that made him believe he could hear this heartbeat?

Poe cleverly uses picturesque wording to make the narrator seem to be confident that he is not mad; however, in reality the narrator is just furthering the burial of the truth. In the second act, and most famous of any of Shakespeare's scenes, Romeo has climbed the Capulet walls and is hiding under Juliet's balcony. To differ from the first, Shakespeare uses Revenge Tragedy to express Romeo's desperation to satisfy his love for both families. Romeo is even prepared to give up his own life to save them. In the most recent film of the play, set in the present day, Romeo is out of control and tries to run Tybalt over in a car. Seeing this fail only angers him more and Romeo ends up shooting Tybalt in a state of despair.

In defence, Romeo explains that he loves the Capulets more than his own family but, being loyal to his love's family, Paris thinks Romeo is mocking him. They fight and Paris is killed. This is another example of the scale of the hatred between the families. Romeo will do anything to see his love again.

However, against the background of hate and misery to the play, Shakespeare portrays a beautiful love story about two lovers trying to make the best of the unfortunate situation they find themselves in.

Her love for Romeo is pronounced more when the Nurse enters and announces that someone is dead. Juliet's first thoughts are of Romeo.

'Romeo and Juliet' ends with a great tragedy, the suicide of the lovers to be united in death. So many things went wrong in a short space of time, and looking back the audience may question whether they believed that the lovers could pull it off. Unfortunately in a dramatic climax to the play, Romeo and Juliet die together, for each other, in the Capulet family tomb.

It seems that only love can overcome hatred in the end as is so dramatically shown by Shakespeare. The two lovers united in death, rest happily and the two families are brought together in mourning.

The Awakening

The Awakening immediately reminded me of a book a read recently called The Great Gatsby. Chopin's informative writing immediately brought me back to Gatsby's huge mansion. Though Mrs. Ponteillier and friends do not seem nearly as wealthy as Gatsby, I see similarities in the way each other set up the book. Chopin's writing style is unique. Though I have not read many women's authors, I have noticed that The Country of the Pointed Firs as well as The Awakening, a lot of detailed commentary and insight into the personalities and surrounding involved in each setting. When Lolitas mother decides to send her to summer camp, Humbert becomes so frantic, plots form in his mind about ways to rid Charlotte. The second half of Lolita, deals with the consummation of Humbert s sexual desire. Humbert is craving Lolita and even resorts to giving her sleeping pills on their first night alone together at the Enchanters Cottage, so he can have his way with her. This is a major theme in the story because by killing Claire Quilty, he is killing his dark side, his alter ego, so that the murder is in effect an attack upon himself.
