Summary of Corts
This reading, Letters from Mexico, has many different parts that I thought were quite interesting, some of which related to our text, and others which differed slightly. This paper will single out a few key points, such as Corts' actions and logic, as well as comment on my opinion of the reading. I will also compare the material of the reading to that of the text.
Letters from Mexico consisted of Corts' letters to His Sacred Majesty, forming a communication line between himself and the Emperor. Even though Corts was severely delayed due to travel, he was very "up-to-date" on his writing. During the letters, Corts explained his reasoning and logic for each action. The letters proceeds to provide information on how far each location or colony was from the previous and included information about the inhabitants he ran into along the way. Corts was very detailed in each of the letters, sometimes going on for more than a page on one person or place. He also tried to include his feelings, his crew's feelings, and any other feelings or attitudes that were involved to get the whole situation fairly reenacted.
I found that throughout this reading, Corts finds multiple ways to defend his actions, even if he was in the wrong. He knew he was defying the emperor, but he defends the actions were noble and trustworthy, done for the good of Spain and not for self acknowledgement. Corts also knew how to satisfy the emperor's fancy for gratification. For example, he begins with "…MOST HIGH AND POWERFUL AND CATHOLIC PRINCE…" and also comments "…Your Sacred Majesty…"Cheap University Papers on Summary Of Cortez's Letters
I have different opinions on this reading. After reading it many times, I still have not decided whether or not Corts was being sincere when explaining his actions. In some instances, I felt as though he was "giving lip service" or humoring the emperor, to gratify himself in the emperor's mind. Corts seemed to have mastered the art of playing mind games and strategizing against the opponent. He was a very talented manipulator, who always seemed to get his way. One fault I felt he had was his sense of timing in decision making. Many times throughout the reading, I felt as though Corts made a hasty decision. For example, one of Corts' men had to convince Corts to let him go talk to Mutezuma, before attacking. If this soldier did not offer, Corts would have attacked, and the alliance made with Mutezuma would have never happened. This is where I feel Corts' strategy failed him.
The reading and the text are very similar in the subject of the Spanish Conquest, but I feel as though the text was too generalized and narrow. The text concentrated more on Columbus' discovery of America, The Fall of the Incan Civilization, and the Aztec Civilization struggle with power, rather than Corts conquering. In fact, the text concentrates on some of the people Corts attacked, but does not mention his particular standing and participation in the Conquest.
In conclusion, Letters from Mexico expanded my knowledge on the Spanish Conquest, clarified my understanding of the military thinking processes involved, and opened my eyes to the manipulation and trickery included in this time frame. The reading was parallel to the text in the idea of generalized Spanish Conquest, but the text was not given enough details for my liking.
