The Constitution vs. The Articles of Confederation


Our country has always had its way of Government and pertaining factors based on a written compellation of the way the country should be run. The first document that the country was run by was called The Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation were instated by Congress, November 15, 1777 and were in effect until March 1, 1781. This document is entitled simply The Constitution of The United States of America, adopted July , 1788, but wasn't in effect until March 4, 178.


The Articles of Confederation was the first government of the United States. It had a weak central government and the basic democracy was based on State control. Although the states had strong control it didn't necessarily bring unity to the whole country. In having a weak central government it made the country susceptible to having no central command. There was no standing army, instead the states had militia. The Constitution came about when people began to rebel under the State control. There were several little rebellions which made the need of a new form of government apparent. In 1787 a committee formed to create a new from of government. This committee met from may to September of that year debating on the ideas of a new government. Different plans for a government were brought up but they all had fundamental flaws. Finally Benjamin Franklin came up with the Great Compromise which stated that the upper house of Congress (The Senate) should have equal representation from the states while the lower house (The House of Representatives) should have representation according to size and population. It took awhile for the thirteen states to finally agree to this but they, the representation of the states in committee finally signed as the new document of government on September 17, 1787. After The Constitution was agreed upon there were ten amendments made which formed a document which is now referred to as The Bill of Rights.


The Constitution and The Articles of Confederation are a like in some ways but in others are widely different. Some of the basic ideas form the Articles of Confederation influenced The Constitution and The Bill of Rights such as Articles of Confederation Article and the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights.
